Phlebotomous argentipes, the vector of Kala-azar was found susceptible to DDT and found to reappear in the nine months after one time DDT spray at the rate of lg/m2 in three endemic foci of districts North and South 24-Parganas of West Bengal. Ph. papatasi, the other predominant species found resistant to DDT appeared within one month of DDT spray.

Eight commercial insect repellents were tested against Ornithodoros parkeri (Acari: Argasidae), Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae), Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), and Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae). Patterns of tolerance to the test materials were distinctive for each test species. Levels of tolerance were coded as character state 0 (sensitive), 1 (intermediate), or 2 (tolerant) and mapped on a cladogram reflecting the accepted classification of the test species. Character state 0 was regarded as primitive, as indicated by the ontology of repellent tolerances in ticks. Aedes aegypti was least evolved and X. cheopis was most evolved in tolerance to repellents. Multiple parallelism of the arachnid and X. cheopis lines occurred in the evolution of the observed tolerances.

Many diseases for which no vaccine is available are transmitted by insect and arthropod vectors, the main exceptions being yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis B. Treatment is less and less effective due to the development of chemoresistance to therapeutic and prophylactic drugs as is well-illustrated by malaria. One of the best methods of preventing these diseases is personal protection against insect bites. Personal protection measures can be divided into three categories which can be used separately or in combination : application of repellents to the skin, wearing clothes impregnated with insecticides, and use of bed nets and other barriers impregnated with insecticides. The choice of method depends on the type of insect vector involved. For insects that are active during the day or at dusk, application of repellents to the skin gives good short-term protection and wearing impregnated clothes is useful. Bed nets that have been properly impregnated with pyrethroids are highly effective for night-time protection. Since personal protection methods are not 100% effective, they must be used in association with chemoprophylaxis according to medical guidelines. Medical advice should be sought if fever should occur especially after returning from a trip in the tropics.

Leishmaniasis is a recurrent health problem for the U.S. and other militaries. Health care workers may be unfamiliar with the risk factors, transmission, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease. A team of highly trained specialists is required to properly manage service members with leishmaniasis. Such care is available only in a few medical centers. Although there are no prophylactic drugs to prevent this disease, control of insect populations and use of personal protection measures can minimize arthropod-related casualties. The impact of leishmaniasis on military operations and research initiatives to better prevent, diagnose, and treat infection are discussed.
Four solvent extracts of each of Lemongrass (Symbopogon citratus), Santonica (Artemisia cinae) and Pomegranate (Punica granatum) were tested against the 3rd instar larvae of Chrysomyia albiceps. The pomegranate extracts showed the larvicidal activity with LC50 ranging between 25 ppm (acetone extract) and 280 ppm (chloroform extract). The Santonica showed larvicidal activity with LC50 ranging between 48 ppm (ethanol extract) and 380 ppm (acetone extract). The Lemongrass showed activity with LC50 ranging between 135 ppm (ethanol extract) and 570 ppm (chloroform extract). So, the most effective action in accordance to LC50 were the acetone extract of pomegranate, followed by ethanol extract of Santonica and lastly ethanol extract of Lemongrass. The slope functions of these three extracts were 4.6, 2.8 and 8.22 respectively. The shift to insect control by plant extracts pave the way to a somewhat healthy environment.

At a recent workshop, experts discussed the benefits, risks, and research priorities associated with using genetically manipulated insects in the control of vector-borne diseases.
The control of insect pests by using insect pathogens as dynamic biological control agents is a recent effort. Model studies on insect-pathogen relations can help in the development of biocontrol programs. Except for the work of Briggs and Godfray [1], insect-pathogen models ignore the stage-specific susceptibility of insects. Moreover most models do not incorporate insect self-regulation. We develop stage-structured models of insect-pathogen relations incorporating insect-density dependence and disease transmitted through direct contact between susceptible and infective individuals. The models are analyzed by using steady-state and stability analysis. Numerical solutions are used as sources of further insight into the dynamics of the insect-pathogen systems. It is shown that there are major differences in the dynamics of adult- and juvenile-infecting diseases. Moreover, the interplay between insect-density dependence and stage-specific susceptibility has important consequences for the dynamics of insect-pathogen systems.
The biological activity of baculovirus AcMNPV and its recombinant SPX were determined on cockroaches Blattella germanica, pharaoh's ants Monomorium pharaonis and flies Musca domestica--species very difficult to eradicate. Baculovirus AcMNPV is one of the best known viruses of wide host range. Its recombinant SPX contained the gene for natural toxin. It is known that this toxin paralyses nervous system of insects by blocking sodium channels. The studies on the influences of baculoviruses showed in the case of cockroaches Blattella germanica L. the disturbances of development. The result of using high concentration baculoviruses SPX 2 x 10(7) pfu/ml for a long time of exposition 8 weeks it was.
