In reviewing the literature we discussed the problem, whether there is a correspondence between the morphological picture of acute gastritis and the clinical expression including a complex of symptoms "acute gastritis", which should better be called acute dyspepsia. There is no good accord.--The histological main features of acute gastritis are infiltration of mucosa by neutrophils and the leucodiapedesis. this acute gastritis is very seldom the cause of clinical symptoms of acute dyspepsia. Alcohol, spices or drugs may produce a "toxic damage" of the mucosa, but they do not cause an acute gastritis, just as little as some viral diseases or staphylococcal toxins.

Uric acid levels in selected spice products were determined by using a glucose analyzer, modified and calibrated for uric acid. In the method, uricase is used to decompose the uric acid; the reaction is monitored with an oxygen-sensitive electrode. Uric acid levels correlated with infestation as determined by AOAC methods.

A solvent defatting technique was tested for 2 spices which require the same extraction process but different defatting agents. For turmeric, which uses isopropanol as the defatting agent, recoveries of rodent hair and insect fragments were not significantly different from those in the original collaborative study, and this technique is recommended as an alternative to AOAC method 44.122(a). However, for oregano, which uses chloroform as the defatting agent, recoveries of insect fragments were significantly lower by the reflux method. An alternative chloroform pretreatment for oregano, therefore, is not recommended for AOAC 44.122(b). It is suggested that reflux action defatting techniques be considered during the developmental stages of new methods. The technique has been adopted official first action for turmeric.

The association of chlorpromazine with Absinthium and Mace oils has been studied on rat's operant conditioning behaviour. Mace oil at the lowest doses showed a non competitive antagonism versus chlorpromazine; Absinthium oil didn't modify the effects of chlorpromazine.
The Chamomile, Cinnamon, Absinthium, Mace, Origanum essential oils have been experimented on rat's operant conditioning behaviour. At the highest doses all the oils caused a depressive effect (probably due to toxicity) while at the lowest doses they caused weak or doubtful effects. Only the Origanum oil caused a depressive effect which clearly seems related to a direct action on the CNS.

An intralaboratory study was made of a new and widely applicable technique for isolating light filth from rubbed and ground sage. The technique eliminated the hazardous, costly, and lengthy pretreatment and isolation procedures of the current methodology and resulted in considerably better recoveries. Overall recovery of all filth elements introduced as spikes was 99.3% on the first trapping. The basic principle of the procedure is product saturation with brine, followed by trapping of the filth elements from tap water with oliver oil.
