Control of snail hosts of bilharziasis in Egypt. 3. Effect of the organophosphorous insecticide, dursban, on carbohydrate metabolism of the snails Biomphalaria alexandria and Bulinus truncatus.

The effects of the organophosphorous insecticide, Dursban, on aerobic oxidation, glycolysis, glucose utilization and gluconeogenesis in snails tissues were determined. Dursban had a biphasic effect on the aerobic oxidation of succinate, glutamate + malate and TMPD + ascorbate while it had only an inhibitory action on pyruvate oxidation. The compound significantly inhibited glycolysis, glucose utilization and gluconeogenesis when used at high concentrations (ten times higher than its LC50). However, it had a slight effect on thepreviously mentioned process when its concentration was equal to or approximated its LC50. The relationship between the metabolic effect of Dursban and its molluscicidal activity is discussed.

Effect of some herbicides on the toxicity of certain molluscacides against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails.

Studies dealing with the effect of some herbicides on the molluscicidal action of certain molluscicides against B. alexandrina have been carried out. In the first part of the study the toxicity of 3 molluscicides (Copper sulphate, Niclosamide and Frescon) and 3 herbicides (Gramaxone, Preforan and Treflan) was tested individually. Results indicated that the molluscicides were more potent than the herbicides. In the second part, snails were exposed for 24 hr to one of the tested herbicides using LC0 or (Sub. lethal conc) then the toxicity of molluscicides was determined among the same snails. Data indicated that pre-exposure to herbicides caused a synergistic action with copper sulphate, while with Niclosamide and Frescon marked antagonistic effect was observed. In the third part molluscicides and herbicides were mixed in different ratios (1:2, 1:1 and 2:1) and the toxicity of the mixtures was tested. A synergistic effect was observed in the case of copper sulphate plus various herbicides especially with Treflan at 1:2 ratio. With Niclosamide and Frescon slight antagonistic effect was detected.

[Vertebrate hormones influence on the reproduction of Biomphalaria glabrata and on Schistosoma mansoni infection (author's transl)].

The influence of fifteen vertebrate hormones on the B. glabrata reproduction and on S. mansoni infection have been studied. Hecogenine and pregnadienolone significantly increased the snail's number of eggs; testosterone, diethylstilbestrol and estradiol valerianate decreased their number of eggs and the mesterolone and progesterone produced a slight decrease in the number of eggs. Crude hecogenine, pregnenolone, prednisone, estradiol, cholic acid, diosgenin, estrone and pregnadione have not shown any significant alteration on the snail reproduction. None of these hormones presented any influence upon the S. mansoni cycle in B. glabrata. Molluscicidal, oocidal and cercarcidal activities have been observed with diethylstilbestrol in concentrations below 10 ppm.
