Color flow sonographic mapping of intravascular extension of malignant renal tumors.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible role of CDFI in identifying malignant renal tumor thrombus in the renal vein or the IVC. This study involved 24 tumors in 23 patients, including 19 renal cell carcinomas, four Wilms' tumors, and one rhabdoid tumor. CDFI had an overall sensitivity of 95% in predicting combined renal vein and IVC tumor involvement but was more sensitive in the renal vein alone (100%) than in the IVC alone (89%). Specificity of CDFI was nearly equal for both renal vein and IVC thrombus at 85%. The main limitation of CDFI was its inability to predict venous tumor extension in large or bulky tumors. We would recommend CDFI as a method of detecting renal vein or IVC thrombus at the time of initial real-time sonographic detection of tumor. When CT or MR imaging is equivocal, CDFI may be used to predict tumor thrombus in the renal vein or IVC.

Spectrum of cystic variants of Wilm's tumour: cystic nephroma (multilocular cyst) and cystic partially differentiated nephroma--a report of four cases.

Two cases of cystic nephroma (multilocular cyst of the kidney), and one case each of cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma (CPDN) and rhabdomyomatous Wilms' tumour are described. All were male and in the pediatric age group. Grossly tumours were unilateral, unicentric and multiloculated. The need for proper designation of these lesions is highlighted because of difference in the treatment and prognosis of these tumours.

[Tuberous sclerosis. Apropos of 22 cases].

A retrospective study on twenty two cases with tuberous sclerosis, from 1972 to 1994, is done. It is also reviewed national and international literature, emphasizing epidemiologic, clinical, radiological, genetic and therapeutic aspects, as well as diagnosis and prognosis.

[Cardiac tumors].

BACKGROUND: Tumours of the heart are rare, but of great clinical interest as the majority are benign and amenable to radical excision. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report on 30 patients with cardiac tumours resected at the National Hospital, Oslo, Norway from 1990 to 1999. Data were obtained from patient files. RESULTS: 27 patients had benign tumours, 25 of which were myxomas predominantly located in the left atrium. One patient had a primary malignant tumour (rhabdomyosarcoma) and two had secondary malignant tumours (metastases from malignant tumours). All patients were alive at follow-up four to ten years after operation. INTERPRETATION: Patient with benign tumours are cured by surgery, whereas in malignant primary tumours the surgery will most often be palliative. Surgery for cardiac metastases may be indicated in selected symptomatic patients.

Tumors of striated muscle.

Three benign forms of muscle tumors and three variants of rhabdomyosarcoma are discussed from the point of view of their histology and behabior. Recent combined modality therapy has significantly improved the prognosis in at least the embryonal form of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Head and Neck Neoplasms↗

[Rhabdoid tumor of the neck].

Three pediatric cases of malignant rhabdoid tumor of the neck are described. Clinical data and imaging findings (US, CT and MRI) are stressed. The mass was well defined, containing punctate calcifications in two cases and encasing the vessels in two other cases. Two patients were treated with a chemotherapy regimen according to MMT 89 SIOP protocol, one had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Two children died of progressive disease; the remaining child who had complete surgical removal of the tumor is on remission 17 months after diagnosis.
