A system is described for comparing various modalities and fractionation schedules of radiation by means of their long-term morphologic effects upon the mouse kidney. The comparison system utilizes a grading scale for histopathologic changes in which a given histologic grade depends upon meeting defined threshold criteria, rather than quantitation of a particular measurement. Renal tubular alterations served as the basis for comparison, since they appeared more reliably defined than glomerular changes. The radiation dose that induced a specific threshold effect in kidneys from 50% of the animals at 6 months was defined as the effective dose-50%, or ED50.ED50 was found for x-rays and negative pimesons administered in 1, 2, or 5 fractions. From these data, the relative biologic effectiveness (RBE) of negative pi-mesons with respect to x-rays was determined for each fractionation schedule.

Bone width (BW), bone mineral content (BMC), and their ration (BMC/BW ratio) were measured in renal patients using direct photon absorptiometry. Serial measurements were made on the radius and ulna in 74 children with renal diseases. Values were compared to age-, sex-, height-, and weight-matched controls. The SD from the mean in normal subjects is +/- 10%. Significant demineralization (greater than -2 SD) was found in 42% of all patients and in 75% with tubulointerstitial disease. Twelve patients with nephrotic syndrome and two with systemic lupus erythematosus, all of whom were receiving prednisone therapy and had a serum creatinine level less than 1.0 mg/dl, and three treated with anticonvulsants had significant demineralization. Severe demineralization (greater than -3 SD) was found in four rachitic patients with tubulointerstitial disease. Normal mineralization was present in 32 patients with various primary glomerular diseases, seven of whom had a serum creatinine level greater than 1.5 mg/dl. BMC declined with daily prednisone therapy but increased with alternate-day dosage in seven patients. This study suggests that demineralization is more common in patients with tubulointerstitial disease and in patients with primary glomerular disease who are receiving prednisone (16 patients) or anticonvulsants. Photon absorptiometry appeared more useful than conventional radiographic evaluation in assessing skeletal involvement in childhood renal disease.

High specific activity [11C] Carboxyl-labeled 1-aminocyclopentane-carboxylic acid ([11C] ACPC) was tested as a tumor-scanning agent in thirty-eight patients. This artificial amino acid clears the blood to a level of less than 12% within 45 min; thus, imaging is possible within the useful life of C-11. [11C] ACPC can be produced in amounts adequate for clinical scanning. Doses between 12 and 45 mCi were given by i.v. injection, and scans obtained only in the single-photon mode gave clinical information on the sites of tumors. There was no evidence of any toxic effects from [11C] ACPC, and the radiation doses as extrapolated from animal data are approximately 0.01 rad per mCi for the whole body and less than 0.06 rad per mCi for the pancreas. In all but five of the 38 patients [11C] ACPC scans were compared with those obtained with Ga-67 citrate. There were 19 positive [11C] ACPC scans and 24 positive Ga-67 scans. The results indicate that [11C] ACPC is likely to be of diagnostic value for cancer patients if used in conjunction with positron tomography instrumentation.

During fluoroscopic bladder and bronchial examinations the radiation workers concerned are exposed to 90 degrees--scattered photons. The effective energy expressed in mm AI was measured for these photons exited at tube potentials in the 60--100 kV RANGE. An increase also depends on whether the measurements are made in the direction of the long axis or the short axis of the phantom. These findings are contrary to the recommendations stipulated in the code of practice SABS 07-1972.
Senile osteroporosis itself is asymptomatic unless pain is induced by the static insufficiency of the skeleton, in long lasting disease. Conventional procedures for early diagnosis and control of patients are invasive and therefore not suitable for routine purposes. The efficiency of sodium fluoride for the treatment of senile osteoporosis after a minimum of 12 months has been established by invasive methods. It is the purpose of this study, to examine the value of photoabsorption-densitometry with double-isotope-method (125-J, 241-Am) for the evaluation of a therapeutic effect in this disorder. 7 patients with clinical and radiological evidence of senile osteoporosis (6 female, 1 male patient with ages of 56 to 87 years) underwent regular follow-up examinations for one year while on a regimen of 25mg. sodium fluoride, as retard, twice daily. The bone mineral content registered 1 cm. proximal of the proc. styloideus ulnaris (representative for the trabecular bone) and 8 cm proximal from the proc. styloideus ulnaris of the right forearm (representative for cortical bone) was not statistically different from the measurements registered prior to the study. However, the bone mineral content registered in both regions increased significantly, after 12 months treatment (p less than 0.05). This indicates that the assessment of bone mineral content by photonabsorptiondensitometry is a valuable method for therapeutic control of this disorder. The method is recommended as a routine procedure for the early diagnosis and for follow up of sodium fluoride therapy geriatric patients.
