Evaluation of the Staph-Zym-system for identification of Staphylococcus hyicus and Staphylococcus intermedius.

The Staph-Zym system was evaluated as a means for identifying cultures of Staphylococcus hyicus isolated from pigs and bovines and cultures of Staphylococcus intermedius isolated from canines. The selected cultures had been identified by conventional methods. The Staph-Zym system correctly identified all 52 S. hyicus and all 33 S. intermedius. It is concluded that the Staph-Zym system is a practical and reliable test for identifying mostly animal pathogenic S. hyicus and S. intermedius, and might possibly be useful for veterinary microbiologists.

Occupational lead poisoning, animal deaths, and environmental contamination at a scrap smelter.

Occupational lead poisoning and environmental contamination were evaluated at a lead scrap smelter. Thirty of 37 employees (81 per cent) has blood lead levels of greater than or equal to 80 mug/100 ml, indicating unacceptable absorption, and 35 had free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) levels greater than 60mug/100ml rbc, indicating toxicity of lead on heme metabolism in red blood cells; eight current and previous employees had been hospitalized with lead colic, and another with encephalopathy. Levels of lead in surface soil (1,800 ppm) and vegetation (20,000 ppm) at the smelter were high and decreased with distance. Animals on nearby pasture had died, and lead levels in the blood, milk, and hair of large and small animals were elevated. Adults living within 100 meters of the smelter had higher blood and hair lead levels than controls, who lived at greater distances, but there was no evidence in them of lead toxicity.

[The occurrence and distribution of rabies in Rheinland-Pfalz].

By means of a descriptive study the progress of silvatic rabies in Rheinland-Pfalz is reported, starting from its first occurrence in 1955. During the period of 30 years a total of 35,090 animals of 48 different species has been examined on rabies, yielding 26,6% infected animals. The annual fractions of positive results fluctuated around this mean value with small deviations. The percentage for wild animals (35.9%) exceeded that of domestic animals (14.8%) significantly. The number of the annual rabid foxes showed no dependence on the hunting indicator of population density (HIPD) but correlated well with the dimension of the rabies-infected area.

Urinary protein loss in the dog: nephrological study of 29 dogs without signs of renal disease.

In 29 dogs without any sign of renal disease, the total daily urinary protein loss was measured and related to renal morphology. The daily urinary protein loss was less than 10 mg/kg bodyweight in most dogs (24 out of 29). The median value of the protein loss in dogs with and without lesions differed significantly, as well as the median values of the ages of dogs with and without lesions. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of urinary protein revealed the presence of albumin, high molecular weight and low molecular weight proteins. With immunofluorescence, especially, the presence of IgA (21 out of 28) and IgM (17 out of 28) was shown. In 12 out of 14 dogs with glomerular lesions IgA deposits were demonstrated (graded as +/- in two dogs and as + in 10 dogs), whereas in nine out of 14 dogs without glomerular lesions IgA deposits were demonstrated (graded as +/- in four dogs and as + in five dogs). The presence of IgA was significantly related to the presence of glomerular lesions (P less than 0.05). Fibrinogen degradation products were not detectable in urine from 15 of 23 dogs.
