Effect of nutmeg on ethanol and d-amphetamine-produced alteration of locomotor activity in the mouse.

A behavioral performance test was used to assess the effect of a mild nutmeg extract on spontaneous locomotor activity of the mouse. The nutmeg extract was administered intraperitoneally once daily for 17 consecutive days and only moderately reduced motor activity from corresponding control. A nutmeg dosage devoid of action on motility was chosen for short-term administration to mice. These nutmeg treated mice and the saline controls received either a single depressant dosage of ethanol or a stimulant dose of d-amphetamine. Nutmeg treated mice showed potentiation of ethanol-mediated depression on motility compared to controls. The d-amphetamine-produced stimulation of locomotor activity was decreased from controls by the nutmeg treatment. The results indicate that the nutmeg extract preparation used contained ingredients which synergistically interacted with alcohol as contrasted with their antagonism to d-amphetamine. The results suggest a CNS depressant action of nutmeg. Such CNS impairment by nutmeg may conceivably contribute to its toxic interaction with certain substances of abuse and may explain, in part, its addictive potential.

Sterol content of foods of plant origin.

Available data on phytosterols from the world's literature have been compiled and summarized. There still exists a paucity of data on the quantities of plant sterols in many foods. More extensive data are available on the relative sterol composition. Our compilation shows that plant oils are excellent sources of phytosterols. Nuts and seeds contain moderate levels, and fruits and vegetables generally contain the lowest concentrations of plant sterols. Analyses of the minor sterols, namely, the delta5- and delta7-phytosterols, have become available only recently.

Mineral oil extraction of light filth from rubbed sage: collaborative study.

An improved method has been developed for extracting light filth in rubbed sage. The method is similar to 44.A04 and 44.A05, except the light filth is isolated by using 20% isopropanol with mineral oil. Collaborative results show that the proposed method yielded better recoveries than the present official first action method. The method has been adopted as official first action.

Gas-liquid chromatographic screening method for six synthetic pyrethroid insecticides.

A method was developed for simultaneously determining 6 synthetic pyrethroid insecticides (fenpropanate, tetramethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate, and deltamethrin) in apple, orange, grape, lemon, tomato, green pepper, and paprika, and sugar beet root and leaves. The pesticides were extracted with acetone and partitioned into methylene chloride. The extract was purified by column chromatography on active carbon-magnesia-diatomaceous earth and then on alumina. Analysis by gas-liquid chromatography with 63Ni electron capture detection was completed in 6 min on a 3% SE-30 liquid phase, using a short column. Recoveries from fortified samples ranged from 68 to 89% in the range of 0.3-1.0 ppm and from 67 to 83% in the range of 0.02-0.2 ppm.
