Protozoan Bacterivory in the Ice and the Water Column of a Cold Temperate Lagoon.

> Abstract Bacterial abundance and bacterivorous protist abundance and activity were examined in ice-brine and water column communities of a cold temperate Japanese lagoon (Saroma-Ko Lagoon, Hokkaido, 44 degreesN, 144 degreesE), during the late winter phase of ice community development (February-March 1992). Bacterial abundance averaged 6 and 1 x 10(5) cells ml-1 in the ice-brine and plankton samples, respectively, and generally decreased during the sampling period. Bacterivorous protists, identified based on direct observation of short-term (<1 h) ingested fluorescently labeled bacteria (FLB) in their food vacuoles, were largely dominated by flagellates, mainly cryothecomonad-type and chrysomonad-like cells and small dinoflagellates of the genus Gymnodinium. Bacterivorous ciliates included mainly the prostomatid Urotricha sp., the scuticociliates Uronema and Cyclidium, the choreotrichs Lohmaniella oviformis and Strobilidium, and the hypotrich Euplotes sp. Protist abundance averaged 4 x 10(3) and 8.1 cells ml-1 in the ice-brine and 0.3 x 10(3) and 1.2 cells ml-1 in the plankton, for flagellates and ciliates, respectively. In contrast to bacteria, the abundance of protists generally increased throughout the sampling period, indicating predator-prey interactions. Protistan bacterivory, measured from the rate of FLB disappearance over 24 h, averaged 36% (ice) and 24% (plankton) of bacterial standing stock and exhibited the same seasonal pattern as for protist abundance. The calculated specific clearance (range, 2-67 nl protozoa-1 h-1) and ingestion (<1-26 particles protozoa-1 h-1) rates were likely to be minimal estimates and grazing impact may have been higher on occasion. Indications for the dependence of "bacterivorous protists" on nonbacterial food items were also provided. Although alternative sources of bacterial loss are likely to be of importance, this study provides evidence for the potential of protozoan assemblages as bacterial grazers in both sea ice-brine biota and water column at the southern limit of sea ice in the northern hemisphere.

Benefits of collaborative learning for environmental management: applying the integrated systems for knowledge management approach to support animal pest control.

Resource management issues continually change over time in response to coevolving social, economic, and ecological systems. Under these conditions adaptive management, or "learning by doing," offers an opportunity for more proactive and collaborative approaches to resolving environmental problems. In turn, this will require the implementation of learning-based extension approaches alongside more traditional linear technology transfer approaches within the area of environmental extension. In this paper the Integrated Systems for Knowledge Management (ISKM) approach is presented to illustrate how such learning-based approaches can be used to help communities develop, apply, and refine technical information within a larger context of shared understanding. To outline how this works in practice, we use a case study involving pest management. Particular attention is paid to the issues that emerge as a result of multiple stakeholder involvement within environmental problem situations. Finally, the potential role of the Internet in supporting and disseminating the experience gained through ongoing adaptive management processes is examined.

Fungal colonization of shrub willow roots at the forefront of a receding glacier.

Shrub willows ( Salix spp.) form associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM), ectomycorrhizal (EM) and dark septate endophytic (DSE) fungi. Willow root colonization by these three types of fungi was studied on a deglaciated forefront of Lyman Glacier, Washington, USA. Root colonization was low; less than 1% of the root length was colonized by AM and 25.6% by DSE. EM colonized 25% of the root tips and 19.4% of the root length. AM and DSE colonization were not related to distance from the present glacier terminus or to canopy cover. EM colonization increased with distance from the glacier terminus based on gridline intercept data but not on root tip frequency data. Availability of propagules in the substrate was low, but numbers of propagules increased with distance from the glacier terminus. The EM communities were dominated by three ascomycetes showing affinity to Sordariaceae in BLAST analyses. Other frequent taxa on the glacier forefront included species of Cortinariaceae, Pezizaceae, Russulaceae, Thelephoraceae and Tricholomataceae. When occurrence of individual taxa was used as a response variable to canopy cover, distance from the glacier terminus, and their interaction, four different fungal guilds were identified: 1) fungi that did not respond to these environmental variables; 2) fungi that occurred mainly in intercanopy areas and decreased with distance from the glacier terminus; 3) fungi that were insensitive to canopy cover but increased with distance from the glacier terminus; 4) fungi that occurred mainly under willow canopies and increased with distance from the glacier terminus. We suggest that fungal colonization is mainly limited by fungal propagule availability. Environmental conditions may also limit successful establishment of plant-fungus associations. We propose that the four EM guilds partly explain successional dynamics. The initial EM community comprises fungi that tolerate low organic matter and nitrogen environment (first and second guilds above). During later community development, these fungi are replaced by those that benefit from an increased organic matter and nitrogen environment (third and fourth guilds above).

Acute service delivery in a police-mental health program for children exposed to violence and trauma.

The Child Development Community Policing Program represents a national model of community-based collaboration between police and mental health professionals for violence-exposed and traumatized children. Administrative data from clinical records of a 24-hour consultation service were examined through stepwise multivariate logistic regression to identify child and event characteristics associated with a direct, in-person response at the time of police contact. Of 2361 children, 809 (34.3%) received a direct, in-person response. Relative to Caucasian children, Hispanic youth were more likely to receive this form of response (OR = 1.36). An acute clinical response was more likely for incidents of gang involvement (OR = 8.12), accidents (OR = 5.21), felony assaults (OR = 2.97), property crimes (OR = 2.30), family violence (OR = 1.53) and psychiatric crises (OR = 1.29). Acute response was less likely when juvenile conduct problems (OR = 0.61), fires (OR = 0.59), child maltreatment (OR = 0.57), and domestic violence (OR = 0.44) were involved. Incidents that were more severe or involved a primary mental health component were related to utilization of intensive CDCP resources.

The urban setting of juvenile pedestrian injuries: a study of behavioural ecology and social disadvantage.

Population-adjusted rates of fatal and serious pedestrian injuries (in 435 Calgary residents age 0 to 17) and some other indicators of behavioural problems (including juvenile delinquency) and social indicators (including poverty and proportions with low birth weight) were compared across 120 neighbourhoods. Two areas with high rates of pedestrian injury, delinquency, and various indicators of disadvantage were identified, one close to the city core and the other in modern, low-income housing on the city periphery. The patterning of injury rates by income levels across neighbourhoods supports earlier Canadian work. Once again, a multivariate, causal model of stress and vulnerability in coping with physically hazardous traffic environments is implied. Social intervention and community development models based on social work research are advocated.

The effect of bystander CPR on survival of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims.

The effect of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was studied in 2142 emergency medical service (EMS) cardiac arrest runs. When bystander CPR was administered to cardiac arrest victims, 22.9% of the victims survived until they were admitted to the hospital and 11.9% were discharged alive. In comparison, the statistics for cardiac arrest victims who did not receive bystander CPR were 14.6% and 4.7%, respectively (p less than 0.001). A critical factor in patient survival was the amount of time that elapsed before the EMS personnel arrived and administered CPR. Patients who received bystander CPR were more likely to have ventricular fibrillation when the EMS arrived. Other factors relating to patient survival were the location of the victim at the time of the cardiac arrest and the age of the victim. Understanding these factors is important in developing community strategies to treat patients with cardiac arrest out of hospital.

Cost analysis of schistosomiasis.

Cost analysis of schistosomiasis is important both in assessing the economic impact of the disease and in identifying the most cost-effective approaches to control. Economic impact has been examined both within and without the health sector, but there is a lack of measurement of the effects of disease, or the threat of disease, on patterns of production and community development. The cost-effectiveness of control approaches has been examined empirically and by using static models. Future analyses require a stronger epidemiological basis incorporating realistic demography and the temporal dynamics of reinfection, and assessment of outcomes in terms of disease rather than infection.

Profile of traditional birth attendants in a rural area of north India.

Two hundred traditional birth attendants (TBAs) of a community development block of India were interviewed. The majority were age 45 years or above (81%), illiterate (85%), and of low caste (78%). Most (88%) had three or more children. Although 27% had inherited the profession from older female relatives, only 4% have daughters or daughters-in-law in the profession. Almost half (48%) had conducted 11 or more deliveries in last year. The TBAs charged more money to deliver a male infant than to deliver a female. The TBA workforce in India appears to be shrinking, possibly because of gradual reduction in family size. Backup support from state maternal health care services is lacking. Existing cadre of TBAs should be involved in primary health care to ensure the survival of the institution of dais (TBAs) and to ensure the availability of basic maternity services to rural women.

Drug abuse in a farm community; a brief appraisal of a research work.

This project was initiated in the rural areas of the Punjab to assess the prevailing trends in the abuse of intoxicating drugs by rural folk, with a view to contributing to future primary mental health care planning as an integral part of comprehensive health care planning. Twenty-four villages were selected from six community development blocks in the three bordering districts of the Punjab. In the rural population, the abuse of intoxicating drugs is mainly confined to alcohol, tobacco, opium and cannabis. Among psychosocial correlates, religion was of obvious predominance. Since Sikh are non-smokers, tobacco abuse was much less among them; but they had maximum alcohol ;and opium abuse. The structure of the family and number of family members tend to move together in their association with drug abuse. In relation to income in general, drug abuse was more common at the two ends of economic scale-the richest and the poorest. Social perception of drug abuse has highlighted the fact that in villages it has still not become an illicit or underground activity. The findings suggest a number of measures for promoting future primary mental health care among rural fold of the country.

A study of drug abuse in rural areas of Punjab (India).

In 1976 an epidemiological survey of drug abuse was conducted in 24 rural villages of four Community Development Blocks (CDB) in three districts of Punjab State bordering Pakistan covering 1276 households. The majority of households had one user. Both men and women reported the use of traditional drugs, i.e. alcohol, tobacco, opium and cannabis. In males, the commonest drug used was alcohol (58.3%), followed by tobacco (19.3%), opium (6.3%) and cannabis (1.2%). The majority of the female respondents were non-users, but a very small number reported use of tobacco, alcohol and opium. The observations are compared with other studies and implications discussed.

Patterns of retarded fetal growth.

The measurement of weight, length and head circumference at birth was used to document the size and shape of infants born at term in a population where mothers are relatively short and underweight. Different patterns of intrauterine growth are proposed to explain the variation in the infant's appearance at birth. Most of the small-for-gestational-age infants were proportionately stunted. This pattern of fetal growth is probably characteristic of infants born to undernourished mothers in economically developing communities, and reflects prolonged intrauterine growth retardation.

Overtreatment of hypertension in the community?

Some patients currently receiving therapy for uncomplicated, mild to moderate essential hypertension may have been started on medication because of transient increases in office blood pressure (BP) or because of "white coat hypertension." As a consequence, many patients who do not have persistent hypertension may be receiving therapy for this diagnosis. This possibility was examined by discontinuing medication in 98 patients without target organ damage who were receiving longterm antihypertensive therapy under the care of their family physician in the community. Development of hypertension was based upon an increase in the patient's ambulatory BP (mm Hg) to > or = 160/95 recorded during usual daily activities. Evidence of early target organ damage was sought by using echocardiography to measure changes in left ventricular mass during the period off therapy. In the 50 patients who remained off treatment for 1 year, mean ambulatory BP increased (P < .001 from baseline (128 +/- 2/76 +/- 1) to 139 +/- 1/82 +/- 1 at 1 year, but remained lower (P < .001) than corresponding office readings performed by the patient's family physician (baseline: 138 +/- 2/83 +/- 1; 1 year: 150 +/- 2/89 +/- 1). At 1 year, ambulatory BP was < 150/90 and < 140/90 in 41 and 21 patients, respectively. Withdrawal of therapy did not produce any changes in left ventricular mass index (g/m2) with the mean value at 1 year (104 +/-3) being similar to baseline (103 +/- 3). Of the remaining patients, 35 redeveloped hypertension and 13 restarted therapy for reasons unrelated to BP. Many patients with treated, uncomplicated, mild to moderate hypertension may tolerate withdrawal of antihypertensive drug therapy without developing persistent hypertension or any increase in left ventricular mass.

The Sri Lanka tsunami experience.

The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 killed 31,000 people in Sri Lanka and produced morbidity primarily resulting from near-drownings and traumatic injuries. In the immediate aftermath, the survivors brought bodies to the hospitals, which hampered the hospitals' operations. The fear of epidemics led to mass burials. Infectious diseases were prevented through the provision of clean water and through vector control. Months after the tsunami, little rebuilding of permanent housing was evident, and many tsunami victims continued to reside in transit camps without means of generating their own income. The lack of an incident command system, limited funding, and political conflicts were identified as barriers to optimal relief efforts. Despite these barriers, Sri Lanka was fortunate in drawing upon a well-developed community health infrastructure as well as local and international resources. The need continues for education and training in clinical skills for mass rescue and emergency treatment, as well as participation in a multidisciplinary response.

A model long-term care hospice unit: care, community, and compassion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influenced the quality of care of terminally ill nursing home residents on a hospice unit in a city and county long-term care facility. The findings disclosed that the hospice team had created a cultural environment in which care, community, and compassion were the predominant components of their philosophy of palliative care. Communication at all levels-among staff, family, friends, and residents-was found to be a core hospice value, essential to community development. The results of this study illustrate that exemplary palliative care can be provided when an interdisciplinary team is dedicated to creating an environment where the principles of palliative care can be fully implemented. The authors conclude that there is a developing role for geriatric nurses to participate in further defining and providing palliative care for older people in their homes, hospitals, nursing homes, and residential care.

Asian/Pacific Islander youth violence prevention center: interpersonal violence and deviant behaviors among youth in Hawai'i.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the prevalence rates of violent and deviant behaviors among a sample of Filipino, Hawaiian, Japanese, and Samoan public high school students residing in Hawai'i, and is the first relatively large-scale study of its kind regarding a disaggregated sample of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) youth. Filipino, Hawaiian, and Samoan adolescents were the chosen ethnic groups for this study's focus due to their over-representation in Hawai'i's juvenile justice system. METHODS: Data for this study were gathered collaboratively by researchers, community groups, and school officials who agreed that youth violence was a community concern worthy of deeper understanding and community response. The study's process included three phases: a focus group consultation phase, field-testing, and the final risk and protective factor study. For the final study, 326 randomly selected students representing three Hawai'i public high schools were surveyed on a one-on-one basis.A smaller sample of Japanese students was also included in the study, serving as a control group. RESULTS: Findings illustrate the importance of disaggregating specific ethnic and gender groups within the AAPI ethnic category when examining adolescent issues. As examples, Samoan youth reported significantly higher rates of violence than other ethnic groups surveyed, and Hawaiian girls reported higher rates of substance use than Hawaiian boys, which was not commensurate with other ethnic groups. Filipino, Hawaiian, and Samoan youth all reported significantly higher rates than Japanese on overall deviant behavior. CONCLUSIONS: Implications for further research and community development include enhancing minority youths' bicultural self-efficacy.

Sustainability indicator system and policy processes in Malaysia: a framework for utilisation and learning.

Formulation of effective sustainability indicators for national assessment demands a comprehensive understanding of the utilisation, diffusion and dissemination of information in policy processes. To illustrate the dynamic of sustainability assessment within the context of policy processes, this paper uses a case study of national sustainability indicators development in Malaysia. Subsequently, this paper ascribes the limited achievement of national sustainability assessment in Malaysia to four types of constraints: meta-policy issues; technical capacities; communication concerns; and the inherent knowledge gaps within the indicator developer community vis-a-vis their theoretical limitations. It is proposed that such constraints will be encountered in many countries. Drawing from the literature on public policy, this paper outlines a framework for investigating indicator behaviour within policy processes based on well-established concepts such as knowledge utilisation and policy learning. I conclude this paper by elaborating on the corresponding future challenges that must be addressed before effective integration of sustainability indicators within policy systems can occur.

PCR-DGGE analysis for the identification of microbial populations from Argentinean dry fermented sausages.

Different PCR-DGGE protocols were evaluated to monitor fermentation process and to investigate bacterial communities developed in two artisanal Argentinean fermented sausages. Bacterial universal primers frequently used in PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) were evaluated. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and staphylococci species isolated from Tucumán sausages were used to determine the experimental conditions for PCR amplification and DGGE differentiation. Total microbial DNA extracted directly from both fermented sausages was subjected to DGGE analysis. PCR-DGGE results were different for each set of primers used. Primers Bact-0124f(GC)-Uni-0515r and V1f(GC)-V1r showed to be efficient to differentiate LAB and Staphylococcus cultures while the set V3f(GC)-Uni-0515r allowed to demonstrate the succession of different Lactobacillus and Staphylococcus species during ripening process. An intense band corresponding to Lactobacillus sakei was observed to be present in both samples. Staphylococcus saprophyticus was only observed in Tucumán sausage while a band identified as Brochothrix thermophacta was detected in Córdoba sausage. PCR-DGGE analysis of different 16S rDNA amplicons was able to discriminate between LAB and Gram-positive, coagulase-negative cocci, resulting an effective tool to establish the microbiota developed in artisanal dry sausages.

Intake of nutrients and food sources of nutrients among the Khasi tribal women of India.

OBJECTIVES: Dietary intake patterns and socioeconomic variables are well-known indicators for assessing the nutrition status of a society. The Khasi society is matrilineal, and women play an important role in the tribal community, especially with respect to family nutrition. We investigated the existing food habits, beliefs, and trends contributing to the nutrition and health of these women. METHODS: Nutrient intakes and food sources were studied in 650 Khasi tribal women older than 18 y. Personal interviews using the questionnaire method, 24-h dietary recall method, and food-frequency method were used to elicit information. Respondents were allocated to a low-income group (LIG) or high-income group (HIG). Within these groups, subjects were further classified as non-pregnant and non-lactating (NPNL), pregnant (P), or lactating (L). The dietary pattern was based on rice and cereals (392.48 +/- 13.81 g/d), flesh foods (21.51 +/- 8.63 g/d), green leafy vegetables (110.37 +/- 3.32 g/d), fruits (20.3 +/- 2.10 g/d), and roots and tubers (54.43 +/- 2.92 g/d). RESULTS: Consumption of energy, protein, iron, and vitamin C were adequate except in L women in whom energy levels were significantly lower than the recommended daily allowance in the LIG (2187 +/- 111.12 g/d), protein levels in the LIG (60.85 +/- 4.48 g/d) and the HIG (66.96 +/- 2.99 g/d), iron levels in the LIG (13.64 +/- 1.63), and vitamin C levels in the LIG (66.55 +/- 6.55). Iron intake also was significantly lower in P women in the LIG (17.41 +/- 2.59 mg/d) and the HIG (23.23 +/- 7.47 mg/d). Consumption of pulses (18.49 +/- 7.41 g/d), dairy products (11.89 +/- 0.48 g/d), other vegetables (4.81 +/- 1.74 g/d), and fats and oils (10.52 +/- 4.71) were significantly below the recommended daily allowance, leading to low consumption of fat, calcium, and carotene in all physiologic states and income groups: calcium in all groups except HIG NPNL women (397.74 +/- 53.62 mg/d); carotene in LIG NPNL (1484.05 +/- 179.01 mg/d) and HIG NPNL (1641.35 +/- 227.86 micrograms/d) women, and LIG L (847.04 +/- 174.72 micrograms/d) and HIG L (1321.89 +/- 673.26 micrograms/d) women. CONCLUSIONS: We suggested dietary modifications to make up the dietary deficits of calcium, fat, and carotene, particularly during pregnancy and lactation, and incorporating nutrition education into the community development programs.
