Fracture stabilization of proximal tibial fractures with the proximal tibial LISS: early experience in Birmingham, Alabama (USA).

This study is a prospective evaluation of the Less Invasive Stabilization System (LTSS) for the treatment of high-energy tibial plateau and proximal tibial fractures treated between November, 1998 and June, 2000. Thirty-two patients sustained thirty-five acute fractures of the tibial plateau (25) or proximal tibia (10). These patients were injured primarily in blunt trauma accidents, with eighteen having multiple fractures, fifteen having ipsilateral extremity fractures, and eleven having major knee ligament injuries. Seventeen patients had open fractures. Thirty-four patients healed their fractures, with one developing a nonunion. Two patients developed infections, both following Type III open fractures. Final range of motion averaged 2 to 116 degrees. Alignment was well maintained, with no patient losing the alignment that was obtained in the operating room. The tibial LISS system worked well at stabilizing difficult fractures of the tibial plateau and proximal tibia with a low incidence of complications in this preliminary study with short-term follow-up.

ABCA1(Alabama): a novel variant associated with HDL deficiency and premature coronary artery disease.

The ATP-binding cassette transporter, ABCA1, is a member of the ABC superfamily of proteins involved in the active transport of substrates across cellular membranes. Recent studies have implicated mutations in ABCA1 as the cause of Tangier disease (TD) and familial hypoalphalipoproteinemia (FHA). To evaluate the molecular basis of low high density lipoprotein (HDL) in a family with premature coronary artery disease, single strand conformational polymorphism analysis was performed for all coding regions and splice site junctions of ABCA1 with the genomic DNA of the proband. The proband and affected individuals were heterozygotes for C254T with proline converted to leucine (P85L). This mutation was not identified in over 400 chromosomes of healthy subjects. In the FHA kindred, family members heterozygous for the ABCA1 variant also exhibited corresponding low levels of HDL cholesterol. These data confirm recent data that a single defective allele in ABCA1 may be associated with reduced HDL cholesterol and FHA.

Root growth potential, seedling morphology and bud dormancy correlate with survival of loblolly pine seedlings planted in December in Alabama.

First-year survival of December-planted loblolly pine seedlings sampled from 20 nurseries ranged from 36 to 86%. Various characteristics of the seedlings including root growth potential (RGP), shoot/root ratio, root weight and stem length were correlated with survival. A regression model using the number of new roots >/= 0.5 cm and the shoot/root ratio accounted for 80% of the variation in first-year survival. Alone, the number of new roots >/= 0.5 cm accounted for 76% of the variation in survival. Foliar nutrients were not correlated with survival. Seedlings with a high proportion of quiescent buds at planting had a higher RGP and better survival than seedlings with dormant (endodormant) buds. The data suggest that seedlings with dormant buds should not be planted on sites where rapid new root growth is needed for survival.
