The psychopathology of feeling and thinking in a schizophrenic.

This paper describes the process and technique of brief analytic psychotherapy with a 22-year-old schizophrenic man who was treated twice weekly for ten months and then followed up for two years. During therapy, re-integration occurred in his affective and cognitive processes. Despite his subjective experience of loss of the capacity for thought and for verbal and non-verbal communication, he had an unusual ability for conveying the stages by which he moved from total confusion and thought disorder to normal intellectual functioning, and for understanding the connections between his various experiences. Four phases of therapy are defined: a phase of disintegration and undifferentiation lasting six weeks, a phase of depression lasting for five weeks, a phase of multiple feelings lasting for fourt thought disorder to normal intellectual functioning, and for understanding the connections between his various experiences. Four phases of therapy are defined: a phase of disintegration and undifferentiation lasting six weeks, a phase of depression lasting for five weeks, a phase of multiple feelings lasting for fourt thought disorder to normal intellectual functioning, and for understanding the connections between his various experiences. Four phases of therapy are defined: a phase of disintegration and undifferentiation lasting six weeks, a phase of depression lasting for five weeks, a phase of multiple feelings lasting for fourteen weeks, and a phase of self-sustained development, starting in the twenty-fifth week and continuing beyond the end of therapy. The patient identified two major types of divisions between thinking, feeling and acting parts of himself and between masculine and feminine parts. Insight into these divisions helped him to understand disorders in his perception of time, and in thinking, remembering and using words and other symbols. His descriptions are presented here in the hope that they may throw light on the difficulties of similar, but less articulate, patients.

Spatio-temporal modulation transfer function in retinal diseases.

Spatio-temporal modulation transfer function was measured in patients with retinal disease (central serous choroidopathy, retinal branch vein occlusion, retinitis pigmentosa) using microcomputer controlled monitor-TV display system. Sensitivity loss in high spatial frequency ranges at 1.0 Hz temporal frequency was the characteristic finding in those diseases, and the results suggest that the sustained channel of the visual perception system is more impaired than the transient channel in retinal diseases involving the macula.

[Vestibular function in female transport workers with cervical osteochondrosis].

A complex study was carried out on the vestibular disorders in 60 transport workers with cervical osteochondrosis in order to determine their incidence and character. The workers' age was from 20 to 60 and a length of service as drivers of transport vehicles - from 3 to 16 and even more years. The vestibular system was studied with regard to spontaneous nystagmic manifestations, the state of stato-kinetics, via experimental rotation and caloric provocations. Changes were observed in space-time perception after the provocation, rheographic hemodynamic changes and serum-biochemical deviations in organism. With the X-ray studies on the cervical segment of the spine, various manifestations of cervical osteochondrosis were found in 40.3 per cent of the subjects observed. The predominating changes were in the region of C4-C7 (in 29.2%). Two-three segpents were affected in the majority of the patients. Uncovertebral arthorosis, narrowing of the intervertebral foramina were found as well as osteophytes of the bodies of the vertebrae, etc. Those manifestations correlated with the vestibular disorders of the respective side, confirmed via rheography (bi- and fronto-mastoid). The vestibular deviations were reduced to dynamic ataxia - positive Romberg test (75.8%), deviations in the gait (57.9%), tendency to hyperreflexia, particularly for the horizontal-rotatory substrates of the vestibular analyzers. The vestibular dysfunction was clearly outlined with the juxtaposition of the data with those of the control group of subjects selected from the patients with functional deviations. Valuable conclusions were drawn concerning the medical-occupational fitness of the transport workers as well as concerning traffic safety.

Effects of response language and stimulus context upon judgments of visual and temporal extent.

College-student subjects judged duration (Experiment 1) or line length (Experiment 2) using conventional measurement units (sec and in.) and cross-modality matching. In each experiment, three stimulus contexts were created varying in average stimulus value. Judgmental contrast was observed in the cross-modality judgments, but not in the conventional-units judgments. It was inferred that the context effects were operating on response-translation processes.

Effects of enucleation of the nondeprived eye on stimulus deprivation amblyopia in monkeys.

The effects of enucleation of the nondeprived eye on the visual function of the deprived eye were studied in two rhesus monkeys reared with long-term lid suture. The lids of one eye of each monkey were surgically fused at the age of approximately 1 month. The lids were opened at ages 19 months and 22 months, and the nondeprived eyes were enucleated at age 57 months. Three measures of visual function (spatial modulation sensitivity, temporal modulation sensitivity, and increment-threshold spectral sensitivity) were determined for the nondeprived and deprived eyes before enucleation and for the deprived eyes during a 9-month period following enucleation. Neither the spatial nor temporal modulation sensitivity measurements showed significant recovery of visual function. The postenucleation spectral sensitivity data showed some recovery of sensitivity over the long wavelength region of the spectrum during the first 3 months, but there was no further recovery over the next 6 months. Therefore, the results of the experiments show that enucleation of the nondeprived eye of monkeys with severe stimulus deprivation amblyopia does not result in a significant functional improvement of the deprived eye.

Some effects of rhythmic context on melody recognition.

The effects of rhythmic context on the ability of listeners to recognize slightly altered versions of 10-tone melodies were examined in three experiments. Listeners judged the melodic equivalence of two auditory patterns when their rhythms were either the same or different. Rhythmic variations produced large effects on a bias measure, indicating that listeners judged melodies to be alike if their rhythms were identical. However, neither rhythm nor pattern rate affected discriminability measures in the first study, in which rhythm was treated as a within subjects variable. The other two studies examined rhythmic context as a between subjects variable. In these, significant effects of temporal uncertainty due to the number and type of rhythms involved in a block of trials, as well as their assignment to standard and comparison melodies on a given trial, were apparent on both discriminability and bias measures. Results were interpreted in terms of the effect of temporal context on the rhythmic targeting of attention.
