[Articulation theory--today].

The classic theory of articulation (Hanau's quintet and Thielemann's formula) was to be modified on the basis of more exact methods of registering the mandibular movements. In the course of protrusion, laterotrusion and mediotrusion, different factors determine direction and inclination of the individual functional dental facets. The laws of articulation are redefined with regard to laterotrusion.

Case report: a tale of two dentures.

A case is presented where loss of an incisor tooth in a partial denture wearer created an aesthetic emergency. It was not possible to solve this simply by addition of a tooth to the existing denture. Reference to the previous dental history suggested that a further immediate solution might be unwise. The design of the existing denture lent itself to the novel solution of a second denture, retained by elements of the first.

Patient evaluation of treatment success as related to denture tooth type.

PURPOSE: Tooth selection is considered an important factor in the construction of complete dentures that function harmoniously and comfortably and preserve the denture-supporting tissues. To bring a scientific background to clinical impressions, the hypothesis that different cusp angles bring different levels of patient satisfaction was tested. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four different occlusal schemes were compared. The dependent variables (3 groups of visual analogue scores of patient satisfaction) were analyzed by means of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) for repeated measures. RESULTS: All MANOVAs showed nonsignificant results for the effect of tooth type on the 3 groups of variables (P values between 0.1 and 0.8). CONCLUSION: The results did not show statistically significant differences in patient satisfaction among the different occlusal schemes. It is recommended that future research use more sensitive instruments to evaluate this specific aspect of treatment success.

[A new device for the positioning of lateral teeth in complete dentures].

A new instrument for the arrangement of the posterior teeth in complete dentures is introduced. The instrument consists of a device to attach a transparent base-plate reproducing the morphology of the jaw to an articulator. During the set up the base-plate is fixed to the articulator at the level of the occlusal plane. So the morphological features of the edentulous jaw are three-dimensionally reproduced by the base-plate at the occlusal level. The advantage of the instrument is to allow a better, immediate and direct control of the occlusal configuration of the posterior teethe in relation to the morphology of the jaw.
