The role of game animals as important hosts of some species of tsetse, including Glossina pallidipes, has been studied in detail in the Lambwe Valley area of Kenya. A large population of G. pallidipes existed in association with a varied community of game animals in the study area, and the investigation was designed to determine which of the hosts available to G. pallidipes were actively selected and whether the preferred hosts influenced the distribution of the tsetse population. Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus) was found to be the preferred host of G. pallidipes and there was a positive correlation between the distribution of these two species. Buffalo and roan antelope were also selected for food but, because of their behavioural characteristics, neither was continually available to the tsetse population and they had no influence on its distribution.

Field experiments were conducted during the settling of young animals of Citellus pygmaeus in four areas 4 to 13.6 hectares in size. From 3 to 6 animals were caught in each area and labeled by administering radioactive substance (0.5 micrograms of glycine 14C or methionine 35S) and colouring hair on the head. In a day or two labeled sousliks were caught again and in 6-7 days a total catching of animals and collection of ectoparasites from their hair and burrows done. In al, 942 sousliks were caught in the experimental areas and 2624 specimens of fleas of different species and 2305 ticks of R. schulzei collected. The average number of fleas which were labeled on one little souslik for a day was 0.1 to 2.3. The number of labeled fleas in the above areas coincided with the number of fleas infected with plague in the areas of epizootia. The level of parasitic contact in settlements of little souslik cannot provide the development of plague epizootia by transmission of the agent through fleas.

A pilot study for the control of Ph. argentipes, a known vector of kala-azar in India, was carried out using an ecological approach. Of the 15 houses selected for the study 10, including the cattle sheds and latrines, were plastered with a mixture of mud and lime, up to a height of 1.22 m taking care to seal all cracks and crevices. The remaining five houses were left unplastered and were considered as control areas. The pre-treatment and post-treatment resting densities of the sandfly were monitored both in treated and untreated houses. A sudden drop in the sandfly density was noticed in the treated houses, whereas there was no significant reduction in the check houses, suggesting an effective control.

The gypsy element of Drosophila melanogaster is the first retrovirus identified so far in invertebrates. Previous data suggest that gypsy ENV-like ORF3 mediates viral infectivity. We have produced in the 293GP/LNhsp701ucL.3 human cell line a Moloney murine leukemia virus-based retroviral vector pseudotyped by the gypsy ENV-like protein. We have shown by immunostaining that the gypsy envelope protein is produced in 293GP/LNhsp701ucL.3 cells and that vector particles collected from these cells can infect Drosophila cells. Our results provide direct evidence that the infectious property of gypsy is due to its ORF3 gene product.

Vmw65, the Herpes Simplex Virus trans-activator of immediate-early genes, was expressed in insect cells using a recombinant baculovirus expression vector and partially purified. Insect cell-derived Vmw65 was shown to be indistinguishable from authentic Vmw65 present in purified HSV-1 virions based on electrophoretic mobility, immunoreactivity with a monoclonal antibody, and ability to interact with cellular factors to form a protein/DNA complex with oligonucleotides containing a TAATGARAT element.
