The effect of norgestrel and clogestone on the spontaneous motility of the human fallopian tube.

Spontaneous isometric contractions in vitro of both isthmic and ampullary parts of the human fallopian tube were studied. The tubes were obtained during the early luteal phase of the menstrual cycle from patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy and who had ingested clogestone acetate or norgestrel, either 1 or 12 hours prior to the experiment. A dose of 150 microgram dl-norgestrel given orally 12 hours preoperatively caused a significant increase in the frequency of spontaneous isometric contractions together with a significant reduction in the area under the curve for each contraction. The possible effect of this altered pattern of motility is discussed.

Haemangioma of the fallopian tube. Case report.

I present the sixth report of a patient with a haemangioma of the Fallopian tube and the first from the United Kingdom. The patient presented with an acute abdomen due to haemoperitoneum.

Primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube: a 20-year review at Ramathibodi Hospital.

Four cases of primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube treated at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University during a 20-year period were reviewed. The mean age was 54 years. The most common presenting symptoms were watery vaginal discharge, abnormal uterine bleeding and abdominal pain. A palpable abdominal or pelvic mass was also a common physical finding. The preoperative diagnosis was correct in three patients. The possibility of getting an early and correct preoperative diagnosis of this disease is also discussed. All of the patients in this report were in stage I & II. The initial treatment consisted of total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with postoperative radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

DNA ploidy in primary fallopian-tube carcinoma using image cytometry.

Determination of DNA ploidy in 61 samples of primary Fallopian-tube carcinoma (FTC) by use of image cytometry is presented. Of these samples, 48 showed an aneuploid DNA content. Patients with euploid DNA content showed a median survival time of 33.8 months compared to 24.5 months for aneuploid cases. A high incidence of aneuploid tumors was consistently observed among all FIGO stages and in all groups of histologic grading. However, no correlation between ploidy and FIGO stage or histologic grading could be demonstrated. This observation could be regarded as a marker for the high aggressiveness of FTC which has been repeatedly described in the past.

Sperm transport to and survival in the human fallopian tube.

A review is given on sperm migration to and sperm survival within the human Fallopian tube. Sperm migration from the external os can be very fast. The survival time of spermatozoa in the oviduct has been demonstrated to be 85 h. Spermatozoa normally enter the abdominal cavity through the open fimbriated end. Laterally closed oviducts retain spermatozoa resulting in a larger number of spermatozoa than in the normal oviduct, where the number of sperm at the site of fertilization is very low. The morphology of spermatozoa reaching the ampulla of the oviduct is mostly normal, which seems to be based on the correlation between normal morphology and good motility. Spermatozoa within the abdominal cavity do not cause antibody formation of any importance for the fertility of the woman.
