[Osteolathyrism. Quantitative-morphological studies on the experimental rat skeletal disease].

In young growing rats, fed the lathyrogenic agent aminoacetonitrile for 3 weeks, characteristic skeletal changes developed resembling the chronic state of osteolathyrism. In both lathyritic and untreated control rats, the femoral head, the distal end of the femur, the proximal tibial end, the thalocalcanean joint and the first lumbar vertebra were investigated using undecalcified thin sections and ground sections. The following methods were employed: quantitative morphometrical analysis of bone structure and bone remodelling of the lumbar vertebra, histochemical demonstration of the composition of polysaccharides, detection of the course of collagenous fibres in cartilage and bone by the polarizing microscope, tetracycline-labelling and fluorescence microscopical determination of epiphyseal longitudinal growth and bone formation activity, photometrical quantification of microradiographies and computer-aided determination of the mineral content of bone.

[Lengthening, axial correction and segmental reconstruction of the extremities using the distraction method].

Between 1988 and 1992 lengthenings axial, corrections and reconstructions have been performed by distraction on lower arms, upper and lower legs in 25 patients because of deviations in length due to either congenital or acquired (multiple cartilaginous exostoses, posttraumatic conditions, congenital pseudarthrosis deformations or defects (fibula-defect, amnion-band-complex, amputation). On the average elongation amounted to 4 cm for an average installation time of the fixator system of 22 weeks and a mean duration of 25 weeks for the adaptation to full strength. Problems arose in the form of soft tissue infections at the rod perforation sites, the necessity for secondary interventions because of early fractures and for corrections of the fixator respectively. Complications compromising the expected goal of treatment did not occur. Consideration of the biological principle of distraction is essential whereas the type of fixator-system is of only minor importance.

[Management of a short femur discovered via ultrasound in utero. Prenatal diagnosis of Stuve-Wiedemann syndrome].

The authors report a case of familial Stuve-Wiedemann syndrome where the diagnosis was made in utero. Following this case the authors discuss the management of short femur discovered by ultrasound. The analysis of the morphology, the ultrasound appearance and the radiographic appearance (X-ray of the uterine contents) may make it possible sometimes to diagnose the syndrome. An important element is a study of the genealogy to discover the way in which a large number of these bone diseases are transmitted. The prognosis for life is very variable according to the severity of the syndrome.

Metachondromatosis.

A case of metachondromatosis is reported, the literature reviewed and the implications of the disease are discussed; one possible complication is avascular necrosis of the femoral capital epiphysis.

Benign cartilage tumors.

Benign cartilaginous tumors are some of the most common lesions affecting the skeleton of children. These include exostoses, enchondromas, periosteal chondromas, chondromyxoid fibroma, and chondroblastoma. The clinicopathologic features of these conditions and their treatment is discussed.
