[HLA typing of patients with herpes simplex recidivans and postherpetic erythema exsudativum multiforme].

62 patients suffering from recurrent herpes simplex, with ten out of them showing postherpetic erythema multiforme, have been investigated with special reference to histocompatibility standardisation. In comparison with a control group (n = 170), our patients revealed a high and statistically significant level of HLA-B5 (p less than 0,01). Postherpetic erythema multiforme seems to be associated with HLA-A9.

[Drug modification of mechanically evoked itching and the concomitant equivalents, erythema and wheals of the skin. Clinico-experimental studies].

In 20 volunteers with normal skin, itching and concomitant erythemas and wheals were produced by mechanical stimulation with a magnetic oscillation system. In a placebo-controlled, randomized double-blind study with twice cross-over, a calcium-vitamin-D-combination as single dose ampoules for peroral application was tested. A significant decrease (p less than 0,001) of the areas of erythema and wheal and itching in treated persons, compared with non-treated and placebo-treated volunteers serving for controls, is showing the antiallergic effectiveness of the tested preparation.

Erythema multiforme associated with Rhus contact dermatitis.

A case of erythema multiforme and Rhus contact dermatitis is presented herein. Due to the association of nephritis and other complications with Rhus poison oak, we recommend that patients with contact dermatitis due to poison ivy who incur secondary erythema multiforme be hospitalized and closely monitored.

Erythema gyratum repens with associated squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.

A 63-year-old man with erythema gyratum repens (EGR) was found to have an underlying squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Neither radiation nor chemotherapy had any effect on the extensive eruption. EGR is the most distinctive of the figurate erythemas, and continues to be one of the most consistent cutaneous signs of an associated visceral malignancy.

Investigation of the erythema effectiveness curve with tunable lasers.

The erythema effectiveness curve (EEC) has been remeasured with frequency-doubled tunable dye lasers in the wavelength range from 250 to 320 nm. The EEC has been determined from the response of the skin of adult white males after application of a 5 mJ/cm2 radiant exposure. Additionally, minimal erythema doses have been measured. The results confirm earlier observations but give curves with a smaller half bandwidth. In the range from 290 to 310 nm, the EEC has been measured after application of 8-methoxypsoralen and of 3-carbethoxypsoralen.

European erythema migrans disease and related disorders.

European erythema migrans disease, lymphocytoma, and acrodermatitis chronica are a group of disorders associated with the bite of ixodid ticks. These disorders are now thought to be due to a single, or closely related, ixodid tick spirochetes. European erythema migrans disease closely resembles Lyme disease. Serological evaluation may help to separate spirochetal lymphocytoma from other pseudolymphomas of nonspirochetal origin and from lymphoma. Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans, so far observed mainly in Europe, is presumably a late manifestation of this group of spirochetal disorders.

[The spirochetal etiology of erythema chronicum migrans and of meningo-polyneuritis Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth].

Erythema chronicum migrans and tick-borne meningo-polyneuritis Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth are caused by a spirochete transmitted by ixodes ricinus. The same is true for Lyme disease, which is the erythema chronicum migrans infection of North-America transmitted by ticks of the same genus. In Europe, this etiology is indicated by demonstration of IgG and IgM antibodies against borrelia duttoni during the course of infection and by immunofluorescence staining of spirochetes in ticks at sites of infection. In the USA, scientists succeeded in isolating from ticks as well as from blood, skin and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Lyme disease. In addition patients showed antibodies against the isolated spirochete. The etiologic findings allow a better causative therapy as well as the investigation of pathogenesis and epidemiology of this multiform disease which may involve skin, nervous system, joints and heart.

[The value of diagnostic measures in erythema nodosum].

This article summarized the findings of check-ups of all our in-patients suffering from erythema nodosum during the past 15 years. A critical review showed that a third of the cases could not be etiologically defined. Based on our results and according to literature, we discuss the valence of diagnostic procedures in erythema nodosum patients without any history or physical evidence of underlying diseases.

Lupus erythematosus with erythema multiforme (Rowell's syndrome). A case report.

A patient who presented with erythema multiforme on clinical and histological examination but who subsequently developed fatal, fulminant systemic lupus erythematosus is reported. The prognostic significance of the development of erythema multiforme-type lesions in lupus erythematosus is discussed with reference to cases reported by Rowell et al. and Provost et al. The term 'Rowell's syndrome' is best avoided.

Erythema nodosum-arthopathy complex as an initial presentation of Behçet's disease. Report of five cases.

In five males an erythema nodosum-arthropathy complex preceded the classical oro-genito-ocular triad of Behçet's disease by an average of 27 months. This symptom complex involving the legs initially suggested "idiopathic" erythema nodosum syndrome or acute sarcoidosis. As the diagnosis of Behçet's disease is clinical, these protean manifestations shoud be recognized as a possible "forme fruste" of the disease.

[Juvenile atrophying erythema multiforme].

This is a case report of an Atrophic Juvenile Erythema Multiform that has occurred in a ten year old white girl. She has been having symptoms since age three, presenting severe flares of lesions that looked like multiform erythema. When the lesions healed a loose scar was left involving the whole skin. Some of the histological and pathogenic mechanisms of the disease are discussed.

Recurrent oral erythema multiforme. Clinical experience with 11 patients.

Recurrent oral erythema multiforme is a distinct, but less-well-recognized variant of the erythema multiforme group of diseases. It is characterized by recurrent blistering of the mouth, periodic recurrences, prolonged duration, and considerable morbidity. The cause is unknown; however, a number of precipitating factors have been suggested. Patients with severe involvement usually require orally administered corticosteroids for adequate control.

Erythema nodosum associated with infectious mononucleosis.

Erythema nodosum is an immunoallergic epiphenomenon appearing during the course of various conditions; it has been exceptionally observed in association with infectious mononucleosis. A 9-year-old girl with clinical manifestations of infectious mononucleosis developed cutaneous nodules of erythema nodosum over the shins, which cleared after 12 days. Diagnosis was based on the presence of atypical mononuclear cells, detection of antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus, and positive ox red blood cell hemolysis. Coincidence of both diseases is not surprising because infectious mononucleosis may exhibit diverse immunologic reactions. On the other hand, commonest etiologies were excluded in this case.

A study of serum fibrinolytic activity in erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL).

Fibrinolytic activity was studied in 31 patients of leprosy and 10 healthy controls. Fibrinolytic activity was found to be significantly decreased in patients with erythema nodosum leprosum, compared to those with uncomplicated lepromatous leprosy, who in turn showed lowered activity compared to patients with tuberculoid form of leprosy and controls. The severity of ENL correlated very well with decrease in fibrinolytic activity. Fibrinolytic activity was improved to levels obtained in uncomplicated lepromatous leprosy after the subsidence of reaction. So it would seem reasonable to suggest that estimation of fibrinolytic activity provides a reliable criteria to quantitate the severity of erythema nodosum leprosum.

Bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) as a cause of erythema multiforme.

The classic iris lesions in a patient with erythema multiforme bullosum were reproduced grossly as well as microscopically by the intradermal injection of a variety of heat-killed, Gram-negative bacteria, as well as their common endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide W. In vitro exposure of the patient's blood to these antigens induced specific fibrin microclots characteristic of a hypersensitivity state. It is possible that some cases of erythema multiforme associated with a variety of respiratory, gastrointestinal, or urinary tract infections may represent a single specific delayed sensitivity reaction to the bacterial endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide.

[Erythema cinitiensis perstans].

The authors report a case of Erythema Cinitiensis Perstans, in a thirty-one years old white man. This dermatosis, reported in the literature also es Ashy Dermatitis and Erythema Dyschromicum Perstans, is here in Brazil exceptional. Clinically this dermatosis is characterized by the presence of gray patches in a sometimes surrounded by an erythematous active border. The lesions may occur on any area of the integument, sparing the hair scalp, palms, soles and nails. The therapy has been ineffective in all the cases, but one reported by Stevenson and Miura and in our case, where the patients have improved after Dithiazanine iodide treatment due to intestinal parasitoses by the Tricocephalus trichiurus.

Erythema nodosum and blastomycosis.

Two patients with blastomycosis and erythema nodosum are described. In one patient, the underlying blastomycosis resolved after wedge resection of the pulmonary infiltrate, but without chemotherapy. In the second patient, the underlying disseminated blastomycosis required amphotericin B therapy. Blastomycosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of erythema nodosum.
