Assessing needs for interdisciplinary team training in children's rehabilitation: a pilot study.

Although ideally children's rehabilitation is a matter of teamwork, in actual practice its quality may differ widely between teams. This study describes the first step in a procedure for the improvement of interdisciplinary team functioning. In this step, assessment of team members' specific needs for additional training is conducted. Detailed information about training needs of a nonoptimally functioning rehabilitation team is given. Key concepts concerning team development, such as role extension, role exchange, and role release, are discussed.

Municipal healthcare workers: work-related health hazards.

Municipal healthcare workers are at risk for a variety of occupational health hazards as a result of daily exposure to work-related biological, chemical, enviromechanical, physical, and psychosocial agents. In addition, this population of workers has not been well studied, so the actual risk may be substantially underreported. This chapter describes these risks and hazards as well as prevention and control strategies. A clear and concerted emphasis on specifically targeting this at-risk workforce both in terms of hazard identification and developing and measuring strategies for risk reduction should be a high priority.

An integrated doctoral educational model for developing researchers in health care strategic management.

Doctoral education varies according to how students that graduate from a particular program are prepared for various type of careers. PhD programs principally work to develop researchers; researchers produce and disseminate new knowledge in a given area of expertise. This manuscript looks specifically at a PhD program designed to produce researchers in healthcare strategic management. This program is based in a business school and builds on general business principles to produce strategists that do research in the healthcare context. The business school program (type B) will be analyzed according to the areas (or potential areas) of research done by its graduates. The different areas are shown in a table where one axis is research content (i.e., specifically what the functional area of research is) and the other axis is publication outlet (i.e., what journal the research is disseminated in). Advantages of the type B program are compared to advantages of a PhD program based in a healthcare administration or healthcare management school (type H program) in terms of publications in these different areas.

The gift of employee dissatisfaction.

Through an employee survey administered at Kaweah Delta Health Care District (KDHCD) in Visalia, Calif., several sources of dissatisfaction were noted, including communication, equipment, staffing and rapid growth. Perceiving no real movement toward resolving these issues, employees vented their frustrations to administration. As director of imaging services, I enlisted the help of two inside consultants, KDHCD's director of education and the director of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). We initiated a process that is ongoing, to move the department toward working together as a team to solve problems within their control. We three directors decided to work with a leadership group to: assess the history of the department clarify the current reality create a vision of the future learn the Covey Habit 4, "Think Win-Win" capture agreements that lead staff and managers to work in self-motivated, self-directed work teams have the director of education present the work to the staff at large, and encourage the leadership team to continue to learn tools that would help the group to improve. The two inside consultants held a series of training meetings with the leadership group of 15, which included a staff member from each modality, site and support service. Participation was optional, and all who were asked agreed to participate. The meetings were held weekly for four weeks for two hours before regular work hours. At the conclusion of the training, the group agreed to continue to meet weekly. After the first four meetings, a summary of the training was presented at a meeting of the full imaging staff plus the vice president of professional services at KDHCD. Through this program, imaging services staff members at KDHCD have achieved an increased sense of cohesion in the group, learned that we have control over some things and not others, and are learning to hold each other accountable with kindness. We are giving each other the benefit of the doubt. We have not achieved perfection, however we have renewed hope for a brighter future.

Population growth and distribution versus agricultural change: an analysis of the Warli tribal community in Dahanu and Talaseri Talukas of Thane district (Maharashtra).

The authors examine the relationship between population growth and agricultural change using a village-level study of the Warli tribal community in Maharashtra, India. "This paper tries to highlight the relationship that exists between the two factors and the relative changes in the structural character of the two factors. It also focuses on the complications brought about by the juxtaposition of a market economy of the nontribals on the subsistence peasant agriculture of the Warli tribals. Methodology is empirical. Suitable statistical aids have been used on available census material [for the years 1901-1971], substantiated with fieldwork."

The Visiting Nurse Association of Texas found that the impact of repetitive motion injuries on their office staff was costing them almost $200,000 a year. The determinants of marital stability: a comparative analysis of first and higher-order marriages.

"This study examines similarities and differences in the determinants of stability for first marriages and remarriages. Focusing primarily on the role of investments in marriage-specific human capital, the paper develops several hypotheses about the effects of children from the current marriage, children from previous unions, and home-production skills. The empirical results, based on white and black respondents from the 1982 [U.S.] National Survey of Family Growth, are generally consistent with the hypotheses and underscore the importance of marriage-specific human capital as a determinant of union stability."
