To increase detection sensitivity in a radon ground-water monitoring program, radon is extracted and transferred from 200 mL of water to a liquid scintillator by bubbling and circulating air through the two liquids in a closed system using a peristaltic pump. This results in a count rate that is 11 times higher than for samples prepared by the most widely used method, where 10 mL of water are added to 10 mL of scintillator. Preparation of counting samples is simple and takes 4 min. Standard deviation in radon concentration is 5% and minimum detectable activity is 5 mBq L(-1), using a counter with a background of 3 counts per hour and a counting time of 3 h. This method is also suitable for the measurement of radium in water.
Quantitative assessment of lung metabolic function is thought to provide biochemical information reflecting integrity of the pulmonary microcirculation. Although multiple indicator-dilution techniques are useful in such pharmacokinetic studies, the need for fractionation and subsequent processing of blood samples greatly prolongs data generation. Accordingly, we designed and tested an in-line system which rapidly can quantify single-pass disposition of photon-emitting substances in the pulmonary circulation of intact animals. The nuclear detection system consisted of a phoswich scintillation probe optically coupled to a photomultiplier tube. Pulses were discriminated for height and shape and counts recorded in a counter-timer, the output of which was interfaced with a personal computer. A mixture of an intravascular reference substance (99mTc-sulfur colloid) and an inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme, N-[1(S)-carboxy-(4-OH-3-[125I]-phenyl) ethyl]-L-alanyl-L-proline (125I-CPAP), was injected as a bolus in the right heart of anesthetized ventilated rabbits and arterial blood was diverted through a flow-cell cuvette directly apposed to the phoswich detector. Single-pass extraction of 125I-CPAP was 39 +/- 3% (mean +/- SE; n = 20) and was depressed in a dose-dependent fashion by the addition of unlabeled CPAP (1-10 micrograms/kg) to the injection. These data indicate that we can now quantify, in the intact animal, saturable binding of an inhibitor to angiotensin-converting enzyme expressed on the surface of the pulmonary microvascular endothelium. Furthermore, such data can be obtained rapidly.

This paper discusses measurements carried out at CERN in the stray radiation field produced by 158 GeV c(-1) per nucleon 208Pb82+ ions. The purpose was to test and intercompare the response of several detectors, mainly neutron measuring devices, and to determine the neutron spectral fluence as well as the microdosimetric (absorbed dose and dose equivalent) distributions in different locations around the shielding. Both active instruments and passive dosimeters were employed, including different types of Andersson-Braun rem counters, a tissue equivalent proportional counter, a set of superheated drop detectors, a Bonner sphere system, and different types of ion chambers. Activation measurements with 12C plastic scintillators and with 32S pellets were also performed to assess the neutron yield of high energy lead ions interacting with a thin gold target. The results are compared with previous measurements and with measurements made during proton runs.

A large-area scanning system using 14 MeV tagged neutrons has been built. The associated (4)He particles emitted in the D+T reaction are detected in an array of Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters that defines a scanning plane having about 10 x 100 cm(2) area. Coincident gamma-rays are detected by 10 BaF(2) scintillators. The capability of the system to determine the presence and the position of samples and to perform an on-line background subtraction is demonstrated. Test with landmines are also reported. This technique allows a significant improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio searching for hidden threat materials. The use with portable sealed-tube generators is foreseen.
In the conventional method of measuring photon-energy albedo using a scintillation detector coupled with a multichannel analyzer, tedious efficiency correction by the inverse matrix method was needed. The indigenously designed proportional-response photon counter, with its detection efficiency proportional to energy of incident photons, was used in the present investigation. Use of the proportional-response photon counter makes the measurement straightforward and more accurate. Measurements of energy albedo from stratified layers of aluminum, iron, lead, and concrete using 662-keV and 1250-keV photon energies are reported.

Current methods for sampling and measuring tritium are described. Although the basic techniques have not changed significantly over the last 10 y, there have been several notable improvements in tritium measurement instrumentation. The design and quality of commercial ion-chamber-based and gas-flow-proportional-counter-based tritium monitors for tritium-in-air have improved, an indirect result of fusion-related research in the 1980s. For tritium-in-water analysis, commercial low-level liquid scintillation spectrometers capable of detecting tritium-in-water concentrations as low as 0.65 Bq L-1 for counting times of 500 min are available. The most sensitive method for tritium-in-water analysis is still 3He mass spectrometry. Concentrations as low as 0.35 mBq L-1 can be detected with current equipment. Passive tritium-oxide-in-air samplers are now being used for workplace monitoring and even in some environmental sampling applications. The reliability, convenience, and low cost of passive tritium-oxide-in-air samplers make them attractive options for many monitoring applications. Airflow proportional counters currently under development look promising for measuring tritium-in-air in the presence of high gamma and/or noble gas backgrounds. However, these detectors are currently limited by their poor performance in humidities over 30%.
A quantitative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) analysis using a multichannel radioactivity counter was designed for the evaluation of 33P-labeled antisense oligonucleotide associated with polymeric drug carrier (nanoparticles). The proposed analytical method was first validated. The criteria of specificity, linearity, reliability, detection and quantification limits, and resolution power were determined. Results were compared to those obtained using liquid scintillation counting of crude samples or after solubilization of gel slices. The proposed method gave a better linearity and reliability than liquid scintillation counting of solubilized gel slices. In comparison with the liquid scintillation counting of crude samples, the method presented the advantage of being able to directly separate oligonucleotides differing by only one nucleotide in length. This method was applied for the separation of free oligonucleotides and oligonucleotides bound onto nanoparticles, allowing quantification of the amount of free and bound oligonucleotides without any further separation steps. Thus, because it is easy and rapid, the quantitative PAGE analysis using a multichannel radioactivity counter offers interesting possibilities for the characterization of oligonucleotide nanoparticles.
