[Peroperative radiotherapy. Initial experience at the Red Cross Hospital].

Intra operative radiation therapy is a new look at an old idea (Rich). In relation with the first experience at the Croix-Rousse Hospital with orthovoltage, a review of technical choices, surgical problems, and biological questions is presented. The analysis of literature about accumulated clinical results suggest that local control in recurrence, residual, or inoperable tumor can be obtained by combined surgery IOR, and external beam irradiation. This short experience demonstrate the feasibility of the treatment as a routine and emphasizes the need for continued study.

[HIV transmission via blood transfusions: a study by the Swiss Red Cross blood bank service].

An inquiry amongst blood transfusion services served to establish at 19 the number of known transfusion associated HIV infections in Switzerland. In 12 cases the transfusion of an anti-HIV positive blood unit could be proven retrospectively, while in 7 cases an HIV-infected blood donor could not be found but the association of the infection with blood transfusion is highly probable by exclusion of other risk factors. All these infections occurred before introduction of anti-HIV screening in Switzerland in November 1985. After this date no new transfusion associated HIV infections have been reported. It is estimated that there are fewer than 170 transfusion associated HIV infections in Switzerland. The probability of infection with AIDS by blood transfusion is less than 1:500,000. Blood transfusion today appears to be as safe as before the emergence of the AIDS epidemic.

The patients were most frequently in their sixties, and there was a predominance in males. The most frequent diseases of the inpatients were benign prostatic hypertrophies and bladder tumors. The most performed operations were also those for urological tumors.

The Red Cross (Western Cape Region) Air Ambulance Service.

The Air Ambulance Service completed 20 years of service to the people of southern Africa and particularly those of the Cape Province on 6 February 1986. This remarkable achievement by a voluntary organization supported by the community has been attained while maintaining an exceptionally high standard of patient care. Demands on the service have increased to the extent that there are now two aircraft in full-time use. The air ambulances are fully integrated with the overall emergency medical services in the Cape Province, co-ordinated by the hospitals department through its Metro control centre. There is every reason to believe that the number of patients transported by air in the future will increase and with improvements in landing facilities in the larger centres serious thought has to be given to the acquisition of a more sophisticated aircraft to serve these areas in particular.
