Place-to-place migration in Israel: estimates of a logistic model.

"A multinomial logit model focusing on economic and other locational factors is formulated and applied to data on place-to-place migration in Israel. Results indicate the effects of expected industrial wage differentials, in accordance with the hypothesis of Harris and Todaro (1970), and of disparities in the structure of industrial employment, suggesting that perceived risk as well as expected return enter into the decision to migrate, as Stark and Levhari (1982) have argued. Other effects include those associated with regional differentials in amenities and agglomeration associated with urbanization, population mobility by age group, center-periphery migration trends, border security hazards, and the like. Implications of the analysis for the Israeli policy of population dispersion are discussed."

The future of refugee flows and policies.

"The number of forced migrants...is estimated today to exceed 40 million [worldwide]. The changed international climate of the 1990s...has shifted the focus from the asylum and resettlement countries to the countries of origin: there is today a greater willingness to intervene in other countries' affairs either to avert the creation of new flows of focused migrants or to assist internally displaced populations, and there is the expectation of large-scale voluntary returns of refugees in asylum. This article discusses these and other policy issues concerning forced migration in this new international environment."

Labor market and rural migrants in post-Mao China.

"This paper seeks to analyze the social background of rural migrants and patterns of rural outmigration in post-Mao China. In the following, I will first discuss the data for this study. Next, I will briefly examine the Chinese government's policies on rural-to-urban migration and the general patterns of population movement since the early 1950s. Then I will study the dynamics of rural outmigration, analyze the data, and present findings. I will conclude this study with some thoughts on rural migration in post-Mao China." The data are from a large-scale survey conducted in 222 villages in 1986-1987.

A simultaneous-equations analysis of urban development: migration and industrial growth in Israel's new towns.

A simultaneous-equations econometric model is used to analyze the recent development of new towns in Israel. The focus is on the relationships among migration, industrial investment, employment, and other structural and policy variables affecting urban development. "Our results affirm the importance of economic opportunity, agglomeration effects, population socioeconomic and ethnic composition, and access in determining migration flows. At the same time, unemployment and investment indices are affected by local labor-market conditions, government incentives, and regional development effects as well as by population composition and migration flows. Policy implications of the analysis are considered."
