Molecular Kondo resonance in atomic Fermi gases.

The usual Kondo effect is associated with the formation of a many-body ground state that contains a quantum-mechanical entanglement between a (localized) fermion and the free fermions. We show, however, that also a bosonic form of the Kondo effect can occur in degenerate atomic Fermi gases near a Feshbach resonance, if the energy of the diatomic molecular level associated with the Feshbach resonance approaches twice the Fermi energy of the atoms.

Exact ground states of rotating Bose gases close to a Feshbach resonance.

We study the ground states of rotating Bose gases when interactions are affected by a nearby Feshbach resonance. We show that exact ground states at high angular momentum can be found analytically for a general model for the resonant interactions. We identify parameter regimes where the exact ground states are exotic fractional quantum Hall states, the excitations of which obey nonabelian exchange statistics.

Signatures of superfluidity for Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases.

We consider atomic Fermi gases where Feshbach resonances can be used to study the whole BCS-Bose-Einstein condensate crossover. We show how a probing field transferring atoms out of the superfluid can be used to detect the onset of the superfluid transition in the high-T(c) and BCS regimes. The number of transferred atoms, as a function of the energy given by the probing field, peaks at the gap energy. The shape of the peak is asymmetric due to the single particle excitation gap. Since the excitation gap also includes a pseudogap contribution, the asymmetry alone is not a signature of superfluidity. The incoherent nature of the noncondensed pairs leads to broadening of the peak. The broadening decays below the critical temperature, causing a drastic increase in the asymmetry. This provides a signature of the transition.

Superfluidity of trapped dipolar fermi gases.

We derive the phase diagram for ultracold trapped dipolar Fermi gases. Below the critical value of the dipole-dipole interaction energy, the BCS transition into a superfluid phase ceases to exist. The critical dipole strength is obtained as a function of the trap aspect ratio. Alternatively, for a given dipole strength there is a critical value of the trap anisotropy for the BCS state to appear. The order parameter exhibits a novel nonmonotonic behavior at the criticality.

Atomic quantum gases in Kagomé lattices.

We demonstrate the possibility of creating and controlling an ideal and trimerized optical Kagomé lattice, and study the low temperature physics of various atomic gases in such lattices. In the trimerized Kagomé lattice, a Bose gas exhibits a Mott transition with fractional filling factors, whereas a spinless interacting Fermi gas at 2/3 filling behaves as a quantum magnet on a triangular lattice. Finally, a Fermi-Fermi mixture at half-filling for both components represents a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet with a resonating-valence-bond ground state and quantum spin liquid behavior dominated by a continuous spectrum of singlet and triplet excitations. We discuss the method of preparing and observing such a quantum spin liquid employing molecular Bose condensates.

Velocity distributions in dissipative granular gases.

Motivated by recent experiments reporting non-Gaussian velocity distributions in driven dilute granular materials, we study by numerical simulation the properties of 2D inelastic gases. We find theoretically that the form of the observed velocity distribution is governed primarily by the coefficient of restitution eta and q=N(H)/N(C), the ratio between the average number of heatings and the average number of collisions in the gas. The differences in distributions we find between uniform and boundary heating can then be understood as different limits of q, for q>>1 and q less, similar 1, respectively.

Collective modes of trapped gases at the BEC-BCS crossover.

The collective mode frequencies in isotropic and deformed traps are calculated for general polytropic equation of states, P proportional n(gamma+1), and expressed in terms of gamma and the trap geometry. For molecular and standard Bose-Einstein condensates and Fermi gases near Feshbach resonances, the effective power gamma approximately 0.5-1.3 is calculated from Jastrow type wave-function ansatz, and from the crossover model of Leggett. The resulting mode frequencies are calculated for these phases around the BEC-BCS crossover.

Pairing fluctuations in trapped fermi gases.

We examine the contribution of pairing fluctuations to the superfluid order parameter for harmonically trapped atomic Fermi gases in the BCS regime. In the limit of small systems we consider, both analytically and numerically, their space and temperature dependence. We predict a parity effect, i.e., that pairing fluctuations show a maximum or a minimum at the center of the trap, depending on the value of the last occupied shell being even or odd. We propose to detect pairing fluctuations by measuring the density-density correlation function after a ballistic expansion of the gas.

Weak dynamical localization in periodically kicked cold atomic gases.

Quantum kicked rotor was recently realized in experiments with cold atomic gases and standing optical waves. As predicted, it exhibits dynamical localization in the momentum space. Here we consider the weak-localization regime concentrating on the Ehrenfest time scale. The latter accounts for the spread time of a minimal wave packet and is proportional to the logarithm of the Planck constant. We show that the onset of the dynamical localization is essentially delayed by four Ehrenfest times, and give quantitative predictions suitable for an experimental verification.

Molecular production in two component atomic fermi gases.

We provide a practical approach to the molecular production via linear downward sweeps of Feshbach resonances in degenerate Fermi gases containing incoherent mixtures of two atomic spin states. We show that the efficiency of the association of atoms is determined just by the Landau-Zener parameter in addition to the density of the gas. Our approach of pairwise summation of the microscopic binary transition probabilities leads to an intuitive explanation for the observed saturation of the molecular production and recovers all atomic loss curves of Regal et al. [Nature (London) 427, 47 (2003))]] as well as Strecker et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 080406 (2003))]] without adjustable parameters.

Current fluctuations in stochastic lattice gases.

We study current fluctuations in lattice gases in the macroscopic limit extending the dynamic approach for density fluctuations developed in previous articles. More precisely, we establish a large deviation theory for the space-time fluctuations of the empirical current which include the previous results. We then estimate the probability of a fluctuation of the average current over a large time interval. It turns out that recent results by Bodineau and Derrida [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 180601 (2004)]] in certain cases underestimate this probability due to the occurrence of dynamical phase transitions.

Density profiles of strongly interacting trapped fermi gases.

We study density profiles in trapped fermionic gases, near Feshbach resonances, at all T< or =Tc and in the near Bose-Einstein condensation and unitary regimes. For the latter, we characterize and quantify the generally neglected contribution from noncondensed Cooper pairs. As a consequence of these pairs, our profiles are rather well fit to a Thomas-Fermi (TF) functional form, and equally well fit to experimental data. Our work lends support to the notion that TF fits can be used in an experimental context to obtain information about the temperature.

Stationary states and energy cascades in inelastic gases.

We find a general class of nontrivial stationary states in inelastic gases where, due to dissipation, energy is transferred from large velocity scales to small velocity scales. These steady states exist for arbitrary collision rules and arbitrary dimension. Their signature is a stationary velocity distribution f(v) with an algebraic high-energy tail, f(v) approximately v(-sigma). The exponent sigma is obtained analytically and it varies continuously with the spatial dimension, the homogeneity index characterizing the collision rate, and the restitution coefficient. We observe these stationary states in numerical simulations in which energy is injected into the system by infrequently boosting particles to high velocities. We propose that these states may be realized experimentally in driven granular systems.

Line of critical points in 2+1 dimensions: quantum critical loop gases and non-Abelian gauge theory.

In this Letter, we (1) construct a one-parameter family of lattice models of interacting spins; (2) obtain their exact ground states; (3) derive a statistical-mechanical analogy which relates their ground states to O(n) loop gases; (4) show that the models are critical for d</=sqrt[2], where d parametrizes the models; (5) note that, for the special values d=2cos([pi/(k+2)], they are related to doubled level-k SU(2) Chern-Simons theory; (6) conjecture that they are in the universality class of a nonrelativistic SU(2) gauge theory; and (7) show that its one-loop beta function vanishes for all values of the coupling constant, implying that it is also on a critical line.

Universal spin-induced time reversal symmetry breaking in two-dimensional electron gases with Rashba spin-orbit interaction.

We have experimentally studied the spin-induced time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking as a function of the relative strength of the Zeeman energy (E(Z)) and the Rashba spin-orbit interaction energy (E(SOI)), in InGaAs-based 2D electron gases. We find that the TRS breaking, and hence the associated dephasing time tau(phi)(B), saturates when E(Z) becomes comparable to E(SOI). Moreover, we show that the spin-induced TRS breaking mechanism is a universal function of the ratio E(Z)/E(SOI), within the experimental accuracy.

Guiding of intense laser pulses in plasma waveguides produced from efficient, femtosecond end-pumped heating of clustered gases.

We demonstrate intense pulse guiding in efficient femtosecond end-pumped waveguides generated in clustered gases. This novel scheme provides a route to significantly lower on-axis plasma density (< 10(18) cm(-3)) more than is feasible in conventional hydrodynamic plasma waveguides. Self-focused propagation and strong absorption of intense femtosecond laser pulses are used to produce long centimeter scale channels in an argon cluster jet, and a subsequent pulse is guided with 3 x 10(17) W cm(-2) intensity and approximately 50% coupling efficiency. Preliminary results with hydrogen clusters also show guiding.

Static and dynamic properties of trapped fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gases.

We investigate some static and dynamic properties of harmonically trapped fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gases in tight de Broglie waveguides with attractive p-wave interactions induced by a Feshbach resonance. An exact solution for the one-body density matrix is analyzed in terms of its natural orbitals, with the surprising result that for odd, but not for even, numbers of fermions the maximally occupied orbital coincides with the ground harmonic oscillator orbital. A dynamical consequence of this is that when the interactions are turned off the on-axis density remains a maximum for an odd number of fermions, whereas a minimum develops for an even number.

Quantum-degenerate mixture of fermionic lithium and bosonic rubidium gases.

We report on the observation of sympathetic cooling of a cloud of fermionic 6Li atoms which are thermally coupled to evaporatively cooled bosonic 87Rb. Using this technique we obtain a mixture of quantum-degenerate gases, where the Rb cloud is colder than the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation and the Li cloud is colder than the Fermi temperature. From measurements of the thermalization velocity we estimate the interspecies s-wave triplet scattering length |amx|=20(+9)(-6)aB. We found that the presence of residual rubidium atoms in the |2, 1> and the |1, -1> Zeeman substates gives rise to important losses due to inelastic collisions.
