A mortal case of leptosprosis happened in a little agricultural community situated in a country town in the south Lazio Region, and in consequence of that the Local Health Unit originated a series of epidemiological investigation and preventive treatments. Serological tests were effectuated both on the residents of the interested area and on animals of the farm. These serological tests gave positive results for four inhabitants and eight animals. The agricultural community were subjected to a chemoprophylaxis. No new cases of disease have been found. The drinking water was analyzed because the water supplied came from unprotected wells. The tests gave unfavorable results for the presence of fecal streptococci. It wasn't possible to effect specific tests for the research of leptospira, because it was difficult to find suitably equipped laboratory. As a result of these tests it was decided to apply preventive treatments on a permanent basis on the farm in question. The fact that the serodiagnosis showed the same kind of leptospira in both men and animal, suggested once again the problem of transmission between animals and men and the need for adequate measures of profilaxis. Also the need to cover exposed agricultural work men with an adequate insurance. Great interest was shown in the correct intervention of the operators of Public Hygiene Service and Veterinary Services. It's essential to coordinate the activity of the two services for an effective intervention in these si milar cases, both during the phases of epidemiological research and prevention. Intention of this work is to furnish a possible operative procedure for situations of this kind.
We tested the multiple-wavelet hypothesis by studying the initiation and maintenance of atrial fibrillation in normal mules, horses, cows, calves, and goats. Persistence of atrial fibrillation in animals with a large atrial mass was compared with results in adult goats and calves having a smaller atrial mass. Atrial stimulation in clinically normal cows, mules, calves, and goats was accomplished using an intra-atrial stimulating catheter with rapid atrial pacing (30/s). Once initiated, atrial fibrillation persisted for 95,120,125 min, 3 days, and 8 weeks in five adult cows, respectively. In contrast, in five calves, atrial fibrillation failed to persist for more than a few minutes. Similar results were found in the small atria of adult goats, indicating that atrial size rather than maturity of the atrial myocardium was responsible. In addition, to demonstrate that this was not a species-dependent phenomenon, it was shown in adult mules that atrial fibrillation could persist for 24 h or more once initiated. These studies are consistent with the multiple-wavelet hypothesis for initiation and maintenance of atrial fibrillation. We also studied the ventricular response in atrial fibrillation. We found that as many as nine consecutive atrial responses can be concealed within the atrioventricular (AV) node associated with a long R-R interval during atrial fibrillation. Although concealment of rapid atrial activity normally occurred in the AV node, one case of infranodal block was observed. It has also been suggested that subsidiary AV junctional pacemakers may be the cause of the ventricular irregularity. However, our experimental studies using microelectrodes in isolated tissue and extracellular bundle of His recordings in intact animals failed to demonstrate that this mechanism was responsible for the irregularity of the ventricular response in atrial fibrillation.

The gastrointestinal fibrescope is introduced to the veterinary profession and its uses are emphasized. Various anatomical structures were examined in 251 domestic mammals and two birds. The findings for referred cases and routine examinations are listed. Twenty colour pictures taken with the fibrescope are reproduced.

Viral antibody studies were done on laboratory dogs in an epizootic of gastrointestinal disease. Increased hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers to a parvovirus (PV) antigenically related to feline panleukopenia virus were found in convalescent serum specimens of 78% (20/26) of the affected dogs and in 83% (5/6) of apparently healthy dogs. With one exception, all dogs tested had significant levels of hemagglutination-inhibition antibody to this PV. Similar increased antibody titers were found to feline panleukopenia virus. Also, neutralizing antibody responses were detected to the canine coronavirus in 24% (6/25) and canine herpesvirus in 45% (10/22) of the affected dogs. However, antibody titers did not increase to canine distemper virus, infectious canine hepatitis virus, canine parainfluenza virus, or minute virus of canines. Subsequent serotesting of the colony provided evidence that additional PV infections occurred in pups from each of 8 litters born 3 to 8 months after the epizootic. These findings indicated the continued presence of the PV for more than 1 year in the infected colony. Of 19 laboratory personnel who worked with the affected dogs, none, including 4 with a concurrent diarrheal disease, developed or had antibodies to the PV or canine coronavirus.
