[Intents to delegitimatize the right to abortion in Puerto Rico].

Analysis of the access to abortion in Puerto Rico is important because, together with Cuba, they are the only countries where abortion is legal in Latin America. This article analyzes the socio-political trends of the debate and discourses through which the discussion of the pro-option and antiabortion sectors have developed in the current situation of Puertorican law and their links with the arguments of those sectors in the United States. Even in this framework of legality, the right to abortion in Puerto Rico has been the object of a process of attacks by the antiabortion sectors that has limited its exercise, and it continues to be a taboo and polemical matter; maybe tolerated, but questioned and undermined as a right, and as a result, delegitimized. The Island situation makes it possible to consider that eradicating the legal prohibition of the practice is not a sufficient element for abortion to become a social need and a right of women in their own conscience, in public opinion and in state interventions.

Child-rearing attitudes of subjects who vary in guilt.

The present study sought to determine whether high- and low-guilt Ss differ in their child-rearing attitudes. High-guilt Ss were found to be more likely to prefer an overprotective orientation combined with harsh punitive control. In general, attitudes of the high-guilt Ss were seen as more likely to produce psychological disturbance in their children.

The relationship between guilt and quality of drug experiences.

Consistent with predictions from Mosher's (1966) guilt construct, the present study found that high guilt males, compared with low guilt Ss, reported significantly less use of marijuana, depressant, stimulant and hallucinogenic drugs. Among all Ss who reported at least one use within each drug category, high guilt Ss rated their experiences as less pleasant and reported a higher frequency of "bad trips" than did low guilt individuals. Overall, these results support Mosher's contention that high vs. low guilt Ss are less likely to engage in culturally prohibited activities such as drug use and are more likely to have unpleasant experiences resulting from guilt when such activities are pursued.

Interleukin-3-dependent expression of the c-myc and c-fos proto-oncogenes in hemopoietic cell lines.

Using Northern blot analysis the expression of several proto-oncogenes was studied in established lines of mast cell precursors. Upon removal of interleukin-3 (IL-3) from the culture medium, factor-dependent cells stop dividing. During the first 7 h, however, normal amounts of total cellular mRNAs are maintained, and this is reflected in unchanged levels of several transcripts, such as actin, c-Ha-ras and c-fes. In contrast, within 1.5 h of IL-3 removal, the levels of c-myc and c-fos mRNAs decrease drastically and addition of IL-3 at that stage quickly induces back the levels found in actively growing cultures. In factor-independent cells, which proliferate actively even in the absence of IL-3, high levels of c-myc and c-fos transcripts are maintained in the absence of growth factor. In cells arrested by serum starvation, addition of 10% serum induces massive amounts of c-fos transcripts, but not of c-myc, and cell proliferation is not restored. The data suggest that the c-myc and c-fos proto-oncogenes play an important role in mediating the multiple effects of IL-3 on hemopoietic progenitor cells.

Recognition molecules myelin-associated glycoprotein and tenascin-C inhibit integrin-mediated adhesion of neural cells to collagen.

Because of the importance of collagens in mediating cell-substrate interactions and the association of collagens with neural recognition molecules in the peripheral nervous system, the ability of neural recognition molecules to modify the substrate properties of collagens, in particular collagen type I, for cell adhesion was determined. Two cell lines, the N2A neuroblastoma and PC12 pheochromocytoma, were investigated for their capacity to adhere to different collagen types in the absence or presence of several neural recognition molecules. Adhesion of N2A or PC12 cells and membrane vesicles from PC12 cells to collagen type I was reduced when the collagen had been preincubated prior to its application as substrate with the extracellular domain of myelin-associated glycoprotein (s-MAG) or, as control, fibroblast tenascin-C (F-tenascin). In mixture with other collagen types, s-MAG was only able to reduce the adhesiveness of collagen types III and V, but not of collagen types II and IV. F-tenascin reduced the adhesiveness of all collagen types tested. In contrast to F-tenascin, s-MAG had to be present during fibrillogenesis to exert its effect, indicating that it must be coassembled into the collagen fibril to block the binding site. Cell adhesion to collagen type I was dependent on Mg2+ or Mn2+ and inhibited by a monoclonal antibody to the alpha 1 integrin subunit. The combined observations indicate that s-MAG and F-tenascin interfere with cell binding, most probably by modifying the integrin binding site, and that the two molecules act by different mechanisms, both leading to reduction of adhesion.

Identification of the border between fibronectin type III homologous repeats 2 and 3 of the neural cell adhesion molecule L1 as a neurite outgrowth promoting and signal transducing domain.

To determine the domains of the neural cell adhesion molecule L1 involved in neurite outgrowth, we have generated monoclonal antibodies against L1 and investigated their effects on neurite outgrowth of small cerebellar neurons in culture. When the 10 antibodies were coated as substrate, only antibody 557.B6, which recognizes an epitope represented by a synthetic peptide comprising amino acids 818 to 832 at the border between the fibronectin type III homologous repeats 2 and 3, was as efficacious as L1 in promoting neurite outgrowth, increasing intracellular levels of Ca2+, and stimulating the turnover of inositol phosphates. These findings suggest that neurite outgrowth and changes in these second messengers are correlated. Such a correlation was confirmed by the ability of Ca2+ channel antagonists and pertussis toxin to inhibit neurite outgrowth on L1 and antibody 557.B6. These observations indicate for the first time a distinct site on cell surface-bound L1 as a prominent signal-transducing domain through which the recognition events appear to be funneled to trigger neurite outgrowth, increase turnover of inositol phosphates, and elevate intracellular levels of Ca2+.

Physicians and obligatory social activism.

This essay examines the claim that physicians have a special obligation to engage in social and political activism. Four ethical paradigms are considered. Two paradigms, the preventive medicine and the social medicine models, embody a limited professional obligation to advocate the priority of health in society; the justification for a more aggressive stance is limited by the failings of paternalism. The radical model and the heroic model speak to issues of personal virtue rather than professional obligation; they are not strictly comparable.

Somatic cell hybrids between Friend erythroleukemia cells and mouse hepatoma cells.

Somatic cell hybrids between hepatoma and Friend erythroleukemia parental cells were studied for the expression of liver-specific and erythroid properties. Several independent clones were isolated using HAT selection and were shown to be true hybrids by isozyme and chromosome analysis. All displayed a complete extinction of hemoglobin and globin mRNA production, but a retention of albumin and transferrin secretion. The data suggest that erythroid differntiation is being actively inhibited by the hepatoma genome. Possible mechanisms that might explain these results are discussed in the light of current hypotheses regarding the mechanism of cell differentiation.

Mechanisms of failure to decontaminate the gut with polymixin E, gentamicin and amphotericin B in patients in intensive care.

The objective of the present work was to assess the possible mechanisms of the poor efficiency of selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) in medical and surgical intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Sixty-four consecutive mechanically ventilated patients received gut decontamination with polymixin E, gentamicin and amphotericin B via a nasogastric tube and were assessed for oropharyngeal, gastric and fecal colonization and for the presence of each antibiotic in the stomach and feces. A decrease in fecal colonization with Escherichia coli was observed over 20 days but not with other gram-negative bacteria or gram-positive cocci. Fifteen and 26% of the fecal colonizing gram-negative bacteria were resistant to polymixin E and gentamicin, respectively, at admission. These proportions increased to up to 50% after 16 days of treatment. Although 50% of staphylococci were initially sensitive to gentamicin, all strains were resistant to this drug after four days of SDD. Both antibiotics were found in concentrations of less than 20 micrograms/g in 11 of 38 stools. Of these 38 stools, nine were not contaminated, 20 were colonized with resistant bacteria and 16 with strains sensitive to one antibiotic present in the stool. Therefore, the poor efficiency of gut decontamination observed was probably due to the great proportion of resistant strains on admission of the patients, to the selection of such resistant strains with SDD, to poor intestinal transit of the antibiotics, and to inactivation of the drugs by the feces. These results support stringent monitoring of fecal colonization in patients undergoing SDD in order to detect the fecal carriage of gram-positive and multiresistant gram-negative bacteria.

[The influence of socio-demographic factors on personality dimensions in the elderly].

The personality factors neuroticism, extraversion, openness for experiences, agreeableness and conscientiousness were investigated in a random population sample of n=497 people over 60 years old with the help of a German version of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory - NEO-FFI (2, 6). The results were compared with those from n=497 people between 18 and 30 years old and with those from n=1051 people between 31 and 60 years old. The elderly described themselves as being less extroverted, less open, more agreeable and more conscientious than the people under 60 years old. Means of the personality factors were not associated with age in the over 60 years old. The average level of neuroticism and conscientiousness was significantly higher in women over 60 years old than in men. People living in the former Eastern Germany were more open and conscientiousness than those living in former Western Germany. A higher level of openness was found in people with a higher educational level. There was a higher level of neuroticism in people living without a partner than in those living with a partner.
