[Biogenic nitric oxide: ten years of the second advent. Prehistory of discovery of the arginine-dependent NO biosynthesis].

This review has been written on the occasion of the decennial anniversary of the discovery of the arginine-oxygenase pathway for nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis. This was one of the greatest and the most surprising discoveries in modern biochemistry and won the Nobel prize in 1998. The main steps of early studies are tracked. Many facts had pointed to the existence of biogenic NO long before 1987 but had been disregarded for reasons of psychology: it was hard to accept that NO is an assignable metabolite, since too many "inviolable" views had to be revised in this case.

Characterization and treatment of the liquid effluents from the anaerobic digestion of biogenic solid waste.

The process wastewater generated by the fermentation of biogenic fractions of solid waste (biowaste) is characterized by very specific composition features, which sets it apart from the well known categories of wastewater. Up to now, there is a definite lack of practical experience and know-how in the treatment of those effluents. In view of the increasingly wide acceptance awarded to the fermentation process, it appears necessary, however, to include the treatment of the generated wastewater in the overall process and to grant it the same priority as the fermentation step. In this study, pilot-scale experiments were conducted over 200 days in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), with the wastewater from a full-scale Bavarian biowaste digestion plant. Characterization of the influent implementing molecular size distribution studies showed that 97% of the components were either in particular form or < 1 kD. The main classes of compounds present in these fractions have been identified. The treatment objectives of the SBR plant were carbon and nitrogen removal. Soluble COD removal efficiencies were comprised between 40 and 60%, yielding a residual, refractory COD concentration of about 2000 mg/L in the effluent. Ammonium removal efficiencies averaged 96% and denitrification occurred with the addition of acetic acid or pretreated biowaste as a carbon source. Pretreated biowaste also showed synergetic effects as a co-substrate for COD removal.

[Selected biogenic elements in the blood of hares (Lepus europaeus Pall.)].

Blood samples were collected through aortic punctures in hares coming from different agricultural regions. Base biogenic elements (Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, chlorides) were determined in blood plasma not showing haemolysis. The values obtained in hares born and kept in captivity are presented for the purposes of comparison. Changes in element levels are described for different pollution load of ecosystems, from physiological aspects for more advanced stages of gravidity, for a higher lactation number and for young growth. The problems of qualitative fasting of hares can also be documented by mineral contents in blood plasma. The levels of some elements were evaluated for a group of adult male and female hares, and the youngs regardless of their sex until the disappearance of Stroh's outgrowth. The results were processed statistically and are summarized in tables (Tabs. 1-12) and they are compared with available literature.

Changes in the level of biogenic amines in experimentally infected and DEC treated proxy host mice.

The levels of biogenic amines, viz., epinephrine, histamine and dopamine were significantly altered in the blood and brain of the proxy host mice which were infected with the mf of Setaria digitata, a filarial parasite. When DEC, the drug of choice was administered to the infected mice, serotonine level was enhanced while the histamine level was decreased. The results were similar in normal mice which were given DEC.

[Blood pressure and mesenteric blood flow in rats during the infusion of biogenic amines. Effect of supralethal irradiation].

The action of biogenic amines (noradrenaline, dopamine), infused at different concentration into the aorta of the urethane anesthetized control and irradiated rats for 2 min., was followed on the basis of systemic blood pressure and mesenteric blood flow. The mesenteric blood flow was measured by means of an electromagnetic flow meter. The changes observed i.e. after dopamine an increase in pressure and flow, after noradrenaline an increase in pressure and a decrease in flow with an increase after infusion had been stopped, correspond to those obtained in larger animals. In many, but not in all cases, the response is proportional to the log of the concentration of the amine infused. Irradiation with 2 kR, i.e. a dose which causes the animals to die from the gastrointestinal syndrome after 3 days, modified the response to dopamine and noradrenaline. The changes are, for noradrenaline, a greater pressure and a lower flow responses and for dopamine a greater pressure response at low and middle doses.

Biogenic VOCs emission inventory development of temperate grassland vegetation in Xilin River basin, Inner Mongolia, China.

Given the key role of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to tropospheric chemistry and regional air quality, it is important to generate accurate VOCs emission inventories. However, only a less fraction of plant species, in temperate grassland of Inner Mongolia, has been characterized by quantitative measurements. A taxonomic methodology, which assigns VOCs measurements to unmeasured species, is an applicable and inexpensive alternation for extensive VOCs emission survey, although data are needed for additional plant families and genera to further validate the taxonomic approach in grassland vegetation. In this experiment, VOCs emission rates of 178 plant species were measured with a portable photoionization detector (PID). The results showed the most of genera and some families have consistent feature of their VOCs emission, especially for isoprene, and provide the basic premise of taxonomic methodology to develop VOCs emission inventories for temperate grassland. Then, the taxonomic methodology was introduced into assigning emission rate to other 96 species, which no measured emission rates available here. A systematical emission inventory of temperate grassland vegetation in Inner Mongolia was provided and further evidence that taxonomy relationship can serve as a useful guide for generalizing the emissions behavior of many, but not all, plant families and genera to grassland vegetation.

Effects of diazepam and cinchocaine on biogenic amines.

Neurochemical and behavioural research show that benzodiazepines are well know anxiolytic drugs, which are also used for the treatment of epilepsy, hypnosis and insomnia. Administration of benzodiazepine to experimental animals produces anxiolytic-like effects in various animal and decreases exploratory activity. Psychomotor stimulants such as cinchocaine also showed potent effect on brain biogenic amines and their metabolite. The present studies indicate the changes in dopamine and 5-HT and their metabolites levels after acute administration of cinchocaine and diazepam.

[Mechanism of action of biogenic chloramines and hypochlorite on initial aggregation of blood platelets].

The antiaggregant action of two reactive oxidants N,N-dichlorotaurine (chloramine of biogenic type) and sodium hypochlorite on the initial ADP-induced aggregation of rabbit blood platelets has been studied. Platelet aggregation in the reconstructed platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was measured by the nephelometric method, and the aggregation index was an increase in the intensity of small-angle light scattering. The introduction of chloramine at comparatively small concentrations (no greater than 1 mM active chlorine) directly into the reconstructed platelet-rich plasma induces the suppression of the initial aggregation (formation of small aggregates) several times stronger than in the case of its preliminary incubation with plasma alone. This suggests that N,N-dichlorotaurine exerts its antiaggeregant action on the platelet-rich plasma by direct interaction with cells. The effects of the inhibition of platelet aggregation in two variants of introduction of high concentrations of N,N-dichlorotaurine do not significantly differ. In this case a great amount of residual chloramine remains in the plasma, which just induces the suppression of platelet aggregation during subsequent reconstruction of the platelet-rich plasma. Similar data have been obtained in the study of the antiaggregant action of hypochlorite. N,N-Dichlorotaurine and hypochlorite at final concentrations of 0.2-0.3 and 0.15 mM, respectively, inhibit strongly the initial aggregation of isolated platelets (approximately 2 x 10(8) cells in 1 ml) preliminarily activated for 1.5 min by the addition of 100-500 nM ADP. However, the antiaggregants show a more profound suppression of aggregation of unstimulated platelets. The antiaggregant effects of N,N-dichlorotaurine and hypochlorite are probably due to the oxidative modification of sulfur-containing groups in platelet plasmatic membrane.

Role of an indigenous drug geriforte on blood levels of biogenic amines and its significance in the treatment of anxiety neurosis.

In the recent past, several herbal drugs have proved their efficacy in decreasing anxiety and tension. Until recently, limited scientific study has been done to prove the clinical importance of these herbal drugs. Geriforte is an indigenous compound commonly advocated for arresting the aging process. This remedy has also been found beneficial in reducing anxiety and stress.-34 diagnosed cases of anxiety neurosis and 24 apparently normal individuals were selected for the present study. After 12 weeks of drug therapy a significant reduction in 5-HT levels was observed. Circulating MAO and GABA showed an increasing trend along with decreased glutamic acid levels after treatment, in the neurotic anxiety cases. Psychological complaints considerably decreased after 12 weeks of therapy. Since Geriforte regulates the altered circulating biogenic amines, this remedy can be advocated as an adjunctive therapy in the management of stress disorders.

Effect of amygdaloid kindled seizures during pregnancy on neonatal brain biogenic amines.

The effects of amygdaloid kindled seizures during pregnancy on the concentrations of noradrenaline (NE), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5HT) and of their respective metabolites, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), normetanephrine (NMN), homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxy-indoleacetic acid (5HIAA), have been studied in the cerebral cortex, brain stem and cerebellum of rat offspring at birth. The levels of DA and NE were increased and those of HVA and MHPG were not modified in the cortex. The levels of DA, NE, 5HT, MHPG and 5HIAA were increased in the cerebellum. The brain stem presented a decrease in DA and 5HT levels, but increased MHPG and HVA levels. It is suggested that, in order to investigate possible changes in the biogenic amine levels on the postnatal period, carefully planned prospective studies are needed.
