Psychometric characteristics of the conceptions of mathematics questionnaire.

This study describes the psychometric characteristics of the 19-item Conceptions of Mathematics Questionnaire for a total of 158 students (86 women and 72 men). The coefficient alpha of internal consistency reliability was .75. Principal components analysis with varimax rotation indicated a two-component solution could be extracted. The two theoretically meaningful dimensions were fragmented conceptions (alpha = .80) and cohesive conceptions (alpha = .80). The former entails seeing mathematics as number rules and formulae to be used to solve problems. Students who hold this conception use rote learning and memorization. In contrast, the latter entails seeing mathematics as a complex logical system for solving complex problems. Students with such a conception approach learning to attain, develop, and apply knowledge.

Effects of bilingual and monolingual presentations and time on concept- and language-matching tasks.

Balanced Turkish-English bilingual participants viewed word pairs, presented both monolingually (English-English or Turkish-Turkish) or bilingually (English-Turkish or Turkish-English) and both for short and long durations. They made decisions on whether the simultaneously presented words in a pair were in the same language or not, or whether they denoted the same concept or not. In the short presentation condition, we found no evidence for subliminal processing. In cases in which both words were consciously identified, participants were more accurate, although not faster in the long than in the short presentation condition for both language and concept decisions. In the long presentation condition, language decisions were more accurate than concept decisions, although not faster. In addition, language decisions were not affected by whether the words were synonyms (concept identity), and concept decisions were not affected by whether the presentation was monolingual or bilingual (language identity), although in the monolingual conditions, "same" decisions were faster but not more accurate, and in the bilingual conditions a speed-accuracy trade-off was observed in that "same" decisions were faster but "different" decisions were more accurate.

Conception rate at first insemination in beef cattle: effects of season, age and previous reproductive performance.

The effects of season, age at previous parturition, and whether the female was retained because she failed to conceive or be detected in estrus during the previous breeding season were analyzed for first-service conception rate in beef cattle. Twelve years of reproductive data on females that were at least 50% Simmental were obtained from a single farm. All females detected in estrus were artificially inseminated during 42-d breeding seasons (52 d for heifers), starting either in June or November. The data, consisting of 9,071 first-service records, were described by a logit model and parameters were estimated using weighted least squares procedures. Age and previous reproductive performance (whether the female had failed to conceive or be detected in estrus during the previous breeding season) significantly affected first-service conception rate, as did the interaction between the two factors. Season of insemination, when considered across all other effects, did not influence first-service conception rate, but the interaction of season and previous reproductive performance was significant, as was the three-way interaction between season, age and previous reproductive performance. Except for those calving at 2.5 yr of age, females that were inseminated in the winter subsequent to parturition in the fall had the highest first-service conception rates. Those that did not conceive during the breeding season subsequent to parturition and were carried over to the following season had lower first-service conception rates, with the lowest being for females carried over to the winter breeding season.

Conception rate for infertile couples. The importance of anamnesis and signs of genital disease in men with abnormal semen findings.

During a 4-year period, 259 men were investigated for primary (86%) or secondary (14%) infertility. Some 3-5 years after the initial investigation, a follow-up study of conception rate, was performed in 200 of these cases. Conception had occurred in 79 couples (39%). Sperm density was lower among men with a history of genital disease(s) than amongst men without such a history, but conception rate was not influenced by a positive history. Men with signs of genital disease(s) had lower sperm density, a smaller proportion of morphologically normal spermatozoa and lower sperm motility, than men with a normal finding at physical examination. Men with such signs had the same conception rate as men with normal physical findings. The only subgroup, in which conception rate was lower than in men with no physical abnormalities, was men with palpatory abnormal epididymis(des).

A concept analysis of intimacy.

This concept analysis examines how the concept of intimacy has been defined in the scholarly literature in order to determine what characteristics or necessary conditions exist that differentiate this phenomenon from all other phenomena. The objective of this concept analysis is to derive a theoretical definition of intimacy that can then be used to operationalize the concept for research. Intimacy is of significance to psychiatric nursing theory because (a) intimacy has been identified as being important to the psychosocial development of adults; (b) intimacy plays a developmental role in identity formation, through the consensual validation of personal worth by providing individuals with the opportunity to feel understood and accepted as they are, within the relationship; (c) research indicates that married couples reporting a deficiency or an absence of intimacy have a significantly higher proportion of symptoms of a nonpsychotic emotional illness; (d) failure to develop intimacy in relationships has been identified as one of the most common factors for seeking outpatient psychotherapy; and (e) intimacy has been identified as a key component in individuals' satisfaction with their social support. The theoretical definition for intimacy is this: a quality of a relationship in which the individuals must have reciprocal feelings of trust and emotional closeness toward each other and are able to openly communicate thoughts and feelings with each other. The conditions that must be met for intimacy to occur include reciprocity of trust, emotional closeness, and self-disclosure. As the literature does not uniformly incorporate physical intimacy as a necessary condition for the concept of intimacy, physical closeness was not incorporated into the definition.

Effect of herd environment on the genetic and phenotypic relationships among milk yield, conception rate, and somatic cell score in Holstein cattle.

A total of 248,230 primiparous records of Holstein cows calving from 1987 to 1994 (daughters of 588 sires in 3042 herds) was used to evaluate potential genotype by environment interactions among mature equivalent milk yield, lactation mean somatic cell score, and conception rate at first service. Herds were classified into low and high environmental groups using three different criteria: standard deviation of herd mature equivalent milk yield, a combination of herd mature equivalent milk yield mean and standard deviation, and the herd mean of body weight at first calving divided by age at first calving. Genetic parameters were modeled by using multiple-trait linear mixed models and were fitted using the multiple-trait derivative-free software. Heritabilities for mature equivalent milk yield, lactation mean somatic cell score, and conception rate at first service were 0.221, 0.106, and 0.015 in low environment herds and 0.300, 0.093, and 0.009 in high environment herds, respectively. Genetic (and phenotypic) correlations between mature equivalent milk yield and lactation mean somatic cell score, mature equivalent milk yield and conception rate at first service, and lactation mean somatic cell score and conception rate at first service were 0.277, -0.417, and -0.209, (-0.049, -0.180, and -0.040) and 0.173, -0.318, and -0.144, (-0.087, -0.166, and -0.035) in low and high environment herds, respectively. The genetic correlations between pairs of traits were consistently smaller in high environment herds, suggesting that differences in management between the two environment levels lessened the antagonistic genetic association between the traits studied. A long-range plan for low environment herds should focus on improving the level of management, which would greatly reduce the unfavorable correlated changes in lactation mean somatic cell score and conception rate at first service associated with the genetic improvement of mature equivalent milk yield.

Interventions after artificial insemination: conception rates, pregnancy survival, and ovarian responses to gonadotropin-releasing hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin, and progesterone.

We hypothesized that increasing concentrations of progesterone (P4) after artificial insemination would increase fertility. Our objective was to assess changes in ovarian structures, incidence of ovulation, and change in serum P4 in response to GnRH, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), or exogenous P4 (controlled internal drug release; CIDR insert) treatment beginning 4 to 9 d after artificial insemination (d 0) and again 7 d later (experiment 1). Blood was collected from 753 cows in 3 herds on d 0 and 7. Ovaries of 162 cows were scanned and mapped to confirm the presence of a corpus luteum (CL), and cows were assigned randomly to serve as controls (n = 41) or to receive a CIDR insert for 7 d (n = 41), 100 microg of GnRH (n = 40), or 3,300 IU of hCG (n = 40). More cows were induced to ovulate in response to GnRH (60%) and hCG (78%) compared with controls (2.4%). Compared with controls, cows treated with GnRH or hCG had more induced CL (d 7) and more total CL (d 7), but serum P4 was increased only in response to hCG. Largest follicle diameters on d 7 were less after GnRH and hCG, but total follicular volume on d 7 was reduced by GnRH, hCG, and CIDR, compared with that of controls. Volume of the original luteal structures was increased by hCG but tended to be reduced by CIDR and GnRH compared with luteal volume in controls. Total CL volume was increased by hCG, but reduced by CIDR, compared with CL volume of controls. Conception rates and pregnancy survival were assessed in response to the same treatments described in experiment 1: controls (n = 708), CIDR (n = 711), GnRH (n = 719), and hCG (n = 714). Tendencies for interactions of treatment x herd and treatment x lactation group were detected, but no 3-way interactions were found. Treatment with hCG increased conception rates in second-lactation cows. The CIDR tended to increase, and hCG increased, conception rates in 2 herds, whereas the CIDR decreased conception rates in 1 herd. Pregnancy survival was reduced by GnRH compared with that in controls. We concluded that GnRH and hCG effectively induced ovulation, and increased number of CL, but only increased serum P4 in hCG-treated cows. Further, treatment with the CIDR or hCG increased conception rates but only in some herds.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone and conception of Holsteins.

Effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (100 micrograms) and time of artificial insemination on fertility, were examined in lactating dairy cows at first, second, and third services. Inseminations were either soon after detected estrus (0 h) or 12 h later, and cows were given gonadotropin-releasing hormone or saline after inseminations. Conception at first service was not improved by hormone treatment. But conception rates at repeat services were improved by nearly 21% when cows were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone within 30 s after insemination. Inseminations soon after detection of estrus (0 h) followed by hormone treatment resulted in the highest conception rates for all services. Time of the insemination (0 versus 12 h) had no effect on conception. Administering gonadotropin-releasing hormone at repeat services should improve conception rate of lactating dairy cows.

Conception rates. 1. Derivation and estimates for effects of estrus detection on cow profitability.

Objectives were to derive equations and obtain estimates per cow of days to conception, milk production, semen purchases, calvings, and reproductive failures based on the probability of estrus detection and AI conception. The net benefits of changing rates of estrus detection, including changes in milk production, semen purchases, and replacement inventories (culled cows and calves) were converted to annual values and multiplied by fixed prices to obtain estimates of the annual financial benefit of a change in rates of estrus detection. Improvement in milk production because of a 1-d decrease in DIM at conception was dependent on DIM, peak milk production, and monthly rate of decline in daily milk production. Variation was considerable in expected benefits of improved estrus detection. Under the assumption that replacement was not planned prior to breeding (in which case improved estrus detection would have no value), estimated financial benefits for increasing the probability of estrus detection from 60 to 70% with a 70% AI conception rate were $6/yr; increasing from 20 to 30% the rate of estrus detection with a 50% AI conception rate increased estimated annual benefits to $83. This wide range of values occurred with fixed costs and prices so that fluctuating prices would introduce further variation in financial benefits. Derived equations allow point estimates of expected benefits with input values estimated.

[Origination and development of syndrome concept in traditional Chinese medicine].

In the opinion of dialectical materialism, concept is developing with the deepening and broadening of human being's mind. The developing process of syndrome concept in traditional Chinese medicine also takes the same way. In the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the connotation of syndrome concept was defined and the embryonic form of syndrome differentiation of zang-fu viscera was formed. In the Song, Jin and Yuan Dynasties, the development of syndrome concept embodied in optimizing the theoretical research based on clinical practice and experiences according to many medical masters in different denominations. The syndrome differentiation of eight principles was established to standardize and perfect the principles of syndrome differentiation in the Qing Dynasty. Modern research of syndrome concept is manifested in objectifying the process of research of syndrome and diseases in different levels and aspects by use of advanced scientific technology.

The relation between feelings of knowing and the number of neighboring concepts linked to the test cue.

We investigated whether feeling-of-knowing judgments are influenced by the number of different neighboring concepts linked to the test cue in long-term memory as measured using association norms. The purpose was to evaluate contrasting predictions made by the partial-retrieval hypothesis and the competition hypothesis. The partial-retrieval hypothesis assumes the more neighboring concepts activated by the test cue, the higher the feeling of knowing. In contrast, the competition hypothesis assumes that feelings of knowing are sensitive to competition between neighboring concepts, and it predicts that the fewer neighboring concepts activated by the cue, the higher the feeling of knowing. The findings were compatible with the competition hypothesis showing that both feeling-of-knowing and prediction-of-knowing ratings always were higher, the fewer different concepts were linked to the test cue. We obtained an identical pattern of results using different kinds of cues including taxonomic category names, ending sounds, and meaningfully related associates. We consider different ways that these findings could be reconciled with the partial-retrieval hypothesis, and we also discuss implications for other explanations of feeling-of-knowing effects.

Research integrity and misconduct: a clarification of the concepts.

The commercialization of research and the ever changing scientific environment has led scholars to shift the focus from promoting research integrity to regulating misconduct. As a result, most literature explains research integrity in terms of avoidance of misconduct. The purpose of the paper is to stimulate reflection and discussion on research integrity and research misconduct. This article explores the meaning of research integrity and research misconduct, and how research integrity can be promoted to ensure safer research and scholarship. We believe that the discussion can help clarify some hazy areas in the research and publication processes, and appreciate some crucial aspects that they may have seen taken for granted. The purpose of this article is to share with the readers some clarification or analysis of the two concepts namely: research integrity and misconduct. The objectives are: (1) To explore and analyse the concepts of research integrity and research misconduct from the educational or developmental perspective and not the legal perspective as others in literature have done. (2) To stimulate the reflection and discussion on strategies to promote research integrity and thus prevent research misconduct Literature review and concept analysis was undertaken to clarify the two concepts. We argue that the two concepts can be viewed along a continuum, i.e. where research integrity ends, research misconduct starts. We also argue that it is the responsibility of the research community at large to always ensure that the scientific ethics balance is maintained throughout the research process to ensure research integrity and avoid research misconduct. We also argue that research integrity is interlinked with morality while misconduct is interlinked with immorality.

Semantic based concept differential retrieval & equivalence detection in clinical terms version 3 (Read Codes).

Modern clinical terminologies are required to provide a large corpus of concepts to cover the complexity of medicine. It is well recognised that sufficient scalability is likely to be achieved only with those schemes that can build post-coordinated constructs compositionally. Clinical Terms Version 3 (Read Codes) uses a system of templates to both express the semantic definition (atoms) of concepts and to allow qualification of core concepts with additional detail. This common mechanism for expressing both intrinsic semantic information and additional information allows both pre- and post-coordinated concepts to be retrieved from different perspectives and to detect equivalence between alternative representations of the same concept. The practical application and experience of such an approach is described in relation to a live clinical database (Diabeta). The merits of such an approach are outlined and its relationship to other documented mechanisms outlined.

Health conception and health promotion in blue collar workers. Program planning issues.

Health conception and health promotion behaviors were measured in 160 blue collar workers ages 18 to 65, focusing on factors influencing blue collar workers' participation in health promotion programs. Results of Laffrey's Health Conception Scale (LHCS) and Pender's Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) indicated: Health responsibility and interpersonal support were significantly greater for women than for men. Exercise was significantly greater for younger workers than for older workers. Nutrition was significantly greater for older workers than for younger workers. Health conception was significantly greater for younger women and for older men. A significant relationship exists between health conception and health promoting lifestyle. Role and self actualization were significantly greater for older workers than for younger workers. Results suggest gender, age, and concept of health are important when planning health promotion programs at an industrial site.

[Concept analysis of intuition].

From experience and observation of decision-making in intensive care units, the following has been observed in respect of clinical decision-making. Nurses in intensive care units take clinical decisions they can justify, and other decisions they cannot justify. Nurses in intensive care units sometimes refer to the unjustified clinical decisions as gut-feelings or intuition. The observation regarding clinical decision-making further indicates that clinical decision-making, based on intuition is effective and contributes to better and more complete problem-solving capabilities in intensive care units. From the preceding problem statement the following question arose, namely: What is intuition? The objective of the study is to analyze the concept intuition. A philosophical analytical research design was implemented in order to reach this objective. The concept intuition was analyzed by means of concept-analysis. The goal of concept analyses was to respectively describe the characteristics of intuition and developing a theoretical definition for the study regarding these characteristics. From the concept-analysis of intuition the following categories and characteristics of intuition realized namely situational factors of intuition, intuition as a process and intuition as a product. The situational factors of intuition refer to the factors that must be in place in order for intuition to occur, namely knowledge and experience, empathy, as well as incomplete data and uncertain situations. The second group characteristics of intuition has to do with the process of intuition, which is speedy, more synthetical-analogical than analytical, interpretative, holistic, irrational and goal-directed. The third category characteristics of intuition has to do with intuition as a product which include problem-solving and the rational justification of intuition by means of reflection.

Discovering missed synonymy in a large concept-oriented Metathesaurus.

The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) [1, 2] Metathesuarus is concept-oriented; its goal is to unite all names with identical meaning in a single Concept. The names come from its constituent vocabularies or "sources"--a wide variety of biomedical terminologies including many controlled vocabularies and classifications used in patient records, administrative health data, bibliographic, research, full-text, and expert systems. Many offer little definitional information, and many are not themselves concept-oriented, so identifying synonymy is a challenging semantic task [3]. The rapidly increasing size of the Metathesaurus makes the task daunting, demanding effective computational support; there are more than 1.5 million names for 730,000 concepts in the January 2000 release. Vocabularies are added and updated using sophisticated lexical matching, selective algorithms, and expert review [4, 5, 6]. Yet the result is imperfect; we have discovered and corrected missed synonymy in approximately 1% of previously released concepts each year. This paper reviews general methods for finding missed synonymy and describes several specific novel approaches which we have found effective.
