[An experience of mental health promotion in an educational institution].

This article describes the work done by an interdisciplinary team belonging to a Mental Health Center in a secondary school situated within its area limits. The socio-political situation had developed opposition among the students towards the established school regulations provoking disturbances in communications and alliances between some of the different school groups. This situation created difficulties for the staff in connection with the specific management of the conflict. The written goals of the educational institution and those of the Mental Health Promotion team of this Mental Health Center were similar as follows: 1. Developing human being's potentialities; 2. Promoting more freedom and better communications. These facts, and the shared goals described above constituted the main reasons and explain why the Mental Health Promotion Team was able to work with the school groups in counseling during 3 1/2 years. It is important to emphasize that one of the main objectives achieved was that of transforming each staff member, such as professors and students into a mental health agent, that is to say someone who through his role is capable of influencing a significant number of people. Additional efforts were made towards turning intergroups communications more fluid breaking alliances and encouraging different groups to participate in school decisions.

[Theater and psychiatry].

It is the look which creates theater, for the spectator as well as for the comedian. When this look does not exist anymore, the game disappears and the theater dies. In our work with patients, we have emphasized the representation, the look and the game. This is true for psychotic and neurotic patients, the working methods being however different. The director is there as guarantee of ethics of "well playing". He forces a door, but what lies behind does not concern him. To talk about his perception, his fantasies, has no room in the repetition. We think it is important that theater remains theater, respecting its own laws, and that it can only become therapeutic at this price. This work is dedicated to Claude Etienne who helped us to make our first steps in the theater.

[Seminar on reciprocal physical examination for structuring personal experience within the scope of medical education].

During medical training, two aspects are usually neglected: practical exercise of technical skills, and the psychological and emotional aspects of the physician's action. A training model is described which is designed to assist in remedying this situation. In a theme-centered sensitivity training group, preclinical medical students of both sexes become acquainted with the basic techniques of physical examination and practice them under mutual guidance. These aspects of technical skill are also compared with the inseparably linked emotional angle. By changing repeatedly from the physician to the patient role and vice versa, role-specific tasks and their implications for practical medical action can be rendered transparent and discussed. The basic setting, exercises developed by the author, and experience with six groups (n = 72 participants) over a period of 2 years are described and briefly discussed.

Taking the role of retarded children: effects of familiarity and similarity.

As a first step in improving social relations between nonhandicapped and retarded children, this study was designed to investigate children's ability to take a retarded child's role and the effects of two variables on this ability: (a) familiarity with the characteristics of retarded children and (b) similarity of experiences to those of retarded youngsters. Findings were interpreted as indicating that children's ability to take the perspective of retarded children may be a productive area for further research.
