Preservation of Schistosoma mansoni eggs and of infected livers as a source of eggs for the circumoval precipitin test.

Eggs of Schistosoma mansoni and livers with numerous granulomata were preserved at -70 C in 1.7% salt solution plus an equal volume of water-soluble jelly. The eggs were suitable for circumoval tests after at least 1 yr of preservation and the livers supplied adequate eggs for the tests for at least 6 mo after preservation. This procedure may be useful where such storage facilities are available, and the COP test is used for diagnosis.

Attempts to standardize the circumoval precipitin test (copt) for Schistosomiasis japonica.

The circumoval precipition test (COPT) is a simple and inexpensive immunodiagnostic test for schistosomiasis japonica which, in the Philippines, has high sensitivity and specificity. Lack of standardization does, however, increase the variability of the test. Parameters which influence the COPT have been examined using large numbers of sera from known S. japonicum infected individuals. In this series of experiments, optimal conditions were determined to be as follows using 2 drops of neat serum and incubation at 37 degrees C in a sealed slide chamber; - approximately 100 eggs from 55 or 60 days infected rabbits for a 24 to 48 hour incubation period. COP reactions (i.e. precipitates associated with eggs) were much less obvious when either immature eggs or eggs obtained from long-term infected rabbits were used. The results emphasize the prime importance of the source of Schistosoma japonicum eggs in the performance of a standardized COPT.

[The evidence of precipitins in Aspergillus caused disorders of the lung as a diagnostic method (author's transl)].

A report is given about serologic results of 27 aspergilloses, mostly aspergillomas. The evidence of antibodies directed against aspergillus species was carried out by radial diffusion according to OUCHTERLONY and immunoelectrophoretically. Filtrate antigens ("metabolic antigens") were used troughout. The positive yield lies in about 90%. Regarding the criteria for evaluation no positive reactions were seen in a control group of 140 patients with serious tuberculosis and other lung disorders. The method is emphasized as diagnostic mean for clearing up shadows of the lung and for pathogenetic control of aspergillus--grown from lung materials.
