[A comparative analysis of a hospitalized population because of alcohol "dependence" or "abuse" and other similar alcoholic populations: a study of 1300 patients].

The authors refer on introduction to a former research where they describe results from 150 inpatients diagnosed of "Alcohol Dependence" and "Alcohol Abuse Syndromes" admitted during 1980-1984 at the Psychiatry Department of University Hospital of Valladolid. A comparison of epidemiologic, clinic, diagnostic and care patients patterns is made versus three others researches, where similar groups of alcoholic patients are studied through 47 variables. The first ++ investigation reports findings from 613 alcoholic out patients demanding psychiatric care at University Hospital in Valladolid. The second one study 134 alcoholic patients (70% out patients and 30% in patients) at the Hospital General in Burgos. The last one reports finding from 403 alcoholic in patients at the Psychiatric Service of "Ramon y Cajal" Hospital of Madrid. A group of 130 patients are studied as a whole, 1127 males (86.89%) and 173 females (13.3%). Fifty per cent of the simple (n = 653) were in-patient and the remainder were out-patients; 28.30% (n = 368) were diagnosed by means of CIE-8 , 61.38% (n = 798) by means of CIE-9 and 10.30 by DSM-III diagnostic criteria. The variables evaluated were population, age, sex, civil state, place of birth, place of living, level of education, profession, work capability, economical status and current social class, working and marriage adaptation, place composition, first work age, emigration, family psychiatric problems, affective deprivation, personal background, former treatment for drinking problems, start of drinking average age, abuse average time, kind of drinking, drinking day average amount, motive of abuse increments, consultation motive, somatic and psychiatric diagnoses, other drug consumptions, TAC and EEG results, first pharmacologic treatment, in-patient average time, and later hospitalisations. A table, a graphic, and 83 bibliographic quotations, part of which belong to a former work, are included.

[Impact of alcoholism mortality on the entire population and on the active French population].

Starting from the estimation of alcohol assigned deaths in the different causes of death of the CIM, 8th revision, the impact of alcoholism on the active and total french populations is measured using two demographic indices, life expectancy and active life expectancy, and the data of the year 1978. This impact is the same as accidents' one; for men it is more than double of the result obtained when "Alcoholic psychosis and alcoholism" and "Cirrhosis" causes of death are considered alone.

[Population frequency of neural tube defects in the population of the city of Moscow].

A sample investigation was carried out in 14 maternity homes of Moscow during 1970--1976 in order to determine the population incidence of defects of the neural tibe. Among 282336 newborns 220 probands with these anomalies were found including 11 with syndromes of non-multifactorial etiology. The total incidence of multifactorial forms was 0.74 +/- 0.10 per 1000 newborns, the incidence of the anencephaly was 0.33 +/- 0.07% and the frequency of the spina bifida was 0.41 +/- 0.07% respectively. The sex ratio 0.61 among probands was statistically significantly different from that normal among newborns. An insignificant increase of the incidence of the defects was observed during the autumn and winter seasons. No correlation was observed between the mother's age, the birth order and the incidence of the neural tube defects.

[Cell population kinetics and the cell population mechanisms of the circadian rhythm of proliferative activity in mouse esophageal epithelium].

The dynamics of 3H-thymidine labeled mitosis and diurnal rhythm of proliferative activity was studied. The isotope was injected to BALB/C mice at the peak of diurnal rhythm of DNA synthesis activity of basal layer cells of oesophageus epithelium. It has been established that the increase in the mitotic index during 24 hours depends on the increase in number of cells being in S-period. The data show that the increase of mitotic index at diurnal rhythm occurs at the expense of 75% of new G0-cells which entered into the mitotic cycle, and of 25% of re-entering cells that had divided during the maximal mitotic activity a day before. It is found that the duration of mitotic cycle of cell population which entered into the mitotic cycle synchronously is almost equal to the period of diurnal rhythm of mitotic activity, i.e. 24 hours.

Polymorphism of C3 component of complement in the Polish population. I. Population and family studies.

In a sample of the Polish population numbering 4741 subjects, the three common types C3S, C3F and C3FS and 15 phenotype variants were found with frequencies 0.0046. The frequencies of C3S and C3F genes determining the common types were 0.8227 and 0.1750, respectively. Examination of 40 newborns and their mothers has revealed that C3 types are formed during the fetal life. The results of studies on 76 families with 157 children and 2332 mother-child pairs have confirmed that 3C3 types are determined by a single genetic locus in which codominant autosomal alleles are situated.

[Methodological contributions to craniometric studies of some early medieval populations of the upper Donau region. II. Comparison of early medieval populations on absolute skull measurements].

On the basis of the means of 10 cranial measurements of 7 medieval populations different methodical approaches of the two commonly used distance estimation methods are compared with respect to their relevance. In addition also the results obtained by the same methods but based on different data (5 indices or 10 measurements, respectively) were compared. In spite of the fact that (DD)2 distances and the dendrograms (after Creel) give better results than the other methodical and graphic variants, the choice of qualified characters is more important than a certain distance method according to the authors' opinion. Thus the groupings and the clustering on the basis of the means of only 5 cranial indices show the best accordance with the ethnogenetic and historical conditions. An additional examination of the segregative values of cranial measurements revealed that the omission of the smallest frontal breadth and probably also the nasal height and breadth does not result in a reduction of the segregative accuracy.

Lymphocyte populations in chronic active liver disease: in vitro effect of levamisole on T-lymphocyte populations.

Changes of T and B lymphocyte populations have been studied in chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. It was found that E rosette-forming T lymphocyte counts were significantly lower in this group of diseases than in the controls. The B cell count did no change significantly as compared to the controls. Incubation with levamisole was followed by a significant increase in active E rosette-forming and total T-cell counts. The authors have appraised the experimental results by comparison to published findings.

[The forms of variability in a cell population as well as in an organism population. The biology of the development of the cardiac myocytes].

Variability of cells is analyzed using data obtained in studies on polyploidy in the heart muscle and on ontogenetic changes in the number of myocytes. In normal myocardium, variation in the number and ploidy of muscle cells is observed. The types of genomic variation are similar to those found in populations of organisms, i. e., to hereditary and modifying variation. In studies on modifications of the myocyte genome, heart growth reserves were revealed, which manifest themselves in pathological states associated with myocardial hypertrophy. These reserves depend on the level of myocardial polyploidy that is determined during early postnatal development.

[Contact allergy in an adult Danish population. The Allergy Study, the Population Studies in Glostrup].

The distribution of allergic contact sensitization was assessed in an unselected population living in Western Copenhagen, Denmark. Ready-to-apply patch tests comprising 23 haptens and mixtures of haptens were mailed to 793 adults, and 567 (71.5%) participated. The tests were read two days after application. A total of 111 positive reactions were found among 86 (15.2%) subjects. Sensitization was less frequent in men than in women (11.5% versus 18.8%, p < 0.03). Twenty out of the 23 chemicals in the test elicited positive reactions. Positive reactions to nickel and thiomersal were those most frequently found (6.7% and 3.4%, respectively). Nickel sensitivity was less frequent in men than in women (2.2% versus 11.1%., p < 0.0001). Regulation of exposure need to be considered in order to prevent primary sensitization and disease recurrences in those already sensitized.

[Biological effects in natural populations of small rodents in radiation-polluted territories. Description of sites. Dynamics of concentration of gamma-emitting radionuclides in populations of two species of small mammals].

It has been revealed that dynamics of gamma-emitting radionuclide concentration in consecutive generations of two species of wild rodents (European bank vole and yellow-necked mouse) is characterised by the phases of an increase, a maximum content (peaks) and a decrease over 10 years after the Chernobyl accident. The peaks of specific activity of gamma-emitting radionuclides in populations in the areas with different densities of radio-contamination falls not on the first year but on the next ones (1987-1989) after the catastrophe, i.e. are observed in the subsequent (3-8) generations of animals. The revealed shift of maximum of radionuclide concentration in comparison with the maximum of their fallout is likely caused by an increase in radionuclide biological availability.
