The effect of the economic transition on the body mass index of conscripts in Poland.

The political and socio-economic transition initiated in Poland in the late 1980s is still continuing and has affected all social classes as well as all spheres of daily life of the people. The impact of this change on nutrition and health is examined here, by comparing the body mass index (BMI) of a 10% nationally representative sample of male conscripts aged 19 years (18.50-19.49), in 1986 (n = 26,396), 1995 (n = 22,612), and 2001 (n = 26,178). Mean BMI of young men did not change between 1986 and 1995, but then increased slightly from 22.0 to 22.3 between 1995 and 2001. There was also a significant and continuous increase in the variation of BMI in all social strata across the entire period 1986-2001. This effect is attributed to economic modernisation that has allowed increased diversity of life styles across occupational groups and between families. Sibship size was more important than socio-economic status in explaining variation in BMI after the political changes in 1990. The BMI-enhancing effect of small sibship size is attributed to nutritional intake, and to changes in food availability across the period under study.

Further investigation of the heavy metal content of the teeth of the bank vole as an exposure indicator of environmental pollution in Poland.

The content of heavy metals in mineralised dental tissues is an indicator of the exposure of their mineral phase to heavy metals during the time of tooth development and dental tissue formation. Therefore, teeth have been used as bio-indicators which accurately reflect the environmental or dietary exposure of animals and humans to heavy metals. This study follows from the earlier work in which it was demonstrated that the teeth from bank voles inhabiting various environmentally polluted and non-polluted forests in Southern Poland were reliable indicators of exposure to heavy metals. Using analytical techniques employed in the earlier study heavy metal concentrations were obtained in the teeth of bank voles trapped in 1998-2000 to determine if efforts to clean up the environment could be detected in changes in heavy metal concentrations in the teeth. The results show that these efforts are reflected in lower concentrations of heavy metals in the teeth but that cross border contamination remains a problem.

Modelling future soil chemistry at a highly polluted forest site at Istebna in Southern Poland using the "SAFE" model.

The multi-layer dynamic model SAFE was applied to the forested catchment Istebna (Southern Poland), to study recovery from acidification. Environmental pollution in the area has been historically high. The model uses data from an intensive monitoring plot established in 1999 in a spruce stand, which was planted in 1880. Observations showed that the soil was depleted of base cations. The measured base saturation in 1999 was between 5 and 8% in the different soil layers. Model predictions assuming full implementation of the UNECE 1999 Gothenburg Protocol and present day base cation deposition show that the base saturation will slowly increase to 20% by 2100. Despite large emission reductions, Istebna still suffers from the very high loads of acidifying input during the past decades. Soil recovery depends on future emissions especially on base cation deposition. The recovery will be even slower if the base cation deposition decreases further.

Histopathological changes in the liver, kidneys, and testes of bank voles environmentally exposed to heavy metal emissions from the steelworks and zinc smelter in Poland.

Bank voles were trapped in the neighborhood of the Sendzimir steelworks in Krakow and the ZGH Boleslaw zinc smelter in Bukowno. The Borecka forest in the north of Poland served as a control area. Lead, cadmium, zinc, and iron concentrations were analyzed in the liver, kidneys, testes, and femur bones of the bank voles. Typically, high levels of lead and cadmium were found in the bones and kidneys, respectively. In the femurs of the rodents from Bukowno, 109.26 microg g(-1) dry weight of lead was detected. The kidneys of these animals had accumulated 32.98 microg g(-1) cadmium. Concentrations of zinc and iron in the tissues were at physiological levels. No damage was found in the tissues of the bank voles from the Borecka forest or in the testes of animals from other areas. Histopathological changes in the kidneys of the rodents from Krakow as well as changes to the liver and kidneys of the animals from Bukowno were demonstrated.

Pathways to psychiatric care and reform of the public health care system in Poland.

OBJECTIVE: - Since 01.01.1999 a reform of the health care system in Poland has been realised based on the general health insurance act. We attempt to use the pathway method, especially measuring of time intervals along pathways, as a way of making accessibility to mental health services operational. METHOD: - In a period of 2 months all patients aged 15 and over who had not sought care from any public or private psychiatric service during the previous 365 days, were interviewed by psychiatrists, using the Polish version of the WHO Encounter Form. RESULTS: - A total of 228 patients were seen. The study reveals that the median interval between first seeing a primary care giver and arrival at a mental health service was 12 weeks, which is much longer than all other European centres in previous studies. CONCLUSION: - Making use of the pathway method and, in particular, median interval analysis between the onset of the mental health problem and seeing mental health professionals (MHPs) has shown practically limited access of patients, with a new episode of care to psychiatric services in both epidemiological catchment areas. This method seems to be a simple and inexpensive way of monitoring the accessibility to MHP in the period of health care reform.

Medicines and psychoactive agents in traffic users--the medico-legal problem in Poland.

The increasing number of traffic accidents connected with rapid development of motorization makes us think of their causes. Regulations by law binding in Poland demand traffic users to be checked up on the presence of agents similar ethyl alcohol. Commonly abused medicines, especially sedative and psychotropic but also hypnotic and analgesic are a great traffic problem. Up to the present analytical procedures and a model medico-legal opinion on the influence of medicines on psychophysical efficiency have not been standardised. In the paper the authors have presented the results of their research on agents negatively influencing the human psychophysical efficiency carried out in the Forensic Medicine Department, Silesian University of Medicine, Katowice. The research comprised individuals involved in both traffic crashes and accidents who (as checked) either where not under the influence of ethyl alcohol or the concentration of ethanol was low (1 per thousand). Positive cases most often showed only one sort of medicines (barbiturates, benzodiazepines or opiates). In other cases barbiturates and benzodiazepines, benzodiazepines and opiates as well as derivatives of benzodiazepine and tricyclic antidepressants were determined. Blood concentrations of all these substances were in a wide range of therapeutic doses.

Population genetics of Y-chromosome STRs in a population sample of the Lithuanian minority residing in the northeastern Poland.

Haplotype and allele frequencies for the 12 Y-STRs were determined in a population sample of 124 unrelated males--members of the Lithuanian minority residing in the northeastern Poland. Three of the haplotypes were encountered in duplicate, while 118 haplotypes were unique. The overall gene diversity was 0.9952. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that the Lithuanian minority can be distinguished from the autochthonous Poles, although these two populations are very close to each other. This database study provides an essential precondition for applying Y-chromosomal STRs estimates in forensic identification of male DNA and tracing of paternal lineages.
