Contact allergy to aziridine paint hardener.

A painter experienced an extensive dermatitis when exposed to a paint primer (undercoating) used to protect wood siding. The primer was an acrylic emulsion with a polyfunctional aziridine added as a self-curing cross-linker or hardener. The polyfunctional aziridine cross-linker was made by reacting propyleneimine with a polyfunctional acrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA). Our patient reacted to the cross-linker and also reacted to TMPTA, which is present in excess in the cross-linker. He also cross-reacted to pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA). Both TMPTA and PETA can be used in the production of aziridine hardeners and both are well known as sensitizers in radiation-dried acrylic printing inks and coatings.

[Body proportions in sculpture and painting. An anthropometric and historical essay (author's transl)].

Taking anthropometric mean values of the European population as a standard, we examined some proportions in representative sculptural and pictorial works of art. We established that the classical antique sculptures and those of Michelangelo and his school conform very closely to the European norm. Mid-Italian wooden crucifixes of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and early medieval European paintings of the Corpus Christi, on the other hand, display quite different proportions: exaggerated length of forearms, or torsos that are stunted in relationship to the legs. Proportions similar to these can be found in the art of the New Kingdom of the Egyptians, reflecting the physique of the Nubian population. We discussed the extent to which an artistic proportion is conditioned by style, imitation, racial aesthetic ideals, or anatomy of the ambient population.

The Grenz Ray technique for painting analysis.

A Grenz Ray unit was used in conjunction with standard medical radiographic film to accomplish a detailed analysis of a painting from the 16th century. This procedure demonstrates the application of basic radiographic technique to a nonmedical field. The resulting radiographic analysis demonstrated the required information and saved the museum time and money.

[Effect of organic solvents on the state of the periodontium and oral cavity in workers employed in pigment and paint industries].

Stomatological examinations were conducted among 270 workers employed at pigment and paint industry, exposed to organic solvents and other gaseous substances developed during the thermal conversion of oils. In the control group of one hundred persons employed in whom the detrimental action of chemical compounds does not exist, stomatological examination did not show any special variations from the normal average. Comparing the two groups it was evident that the hygiene of the oral cavity was significantly worse in the group of workers exposed to organic solvents and other chemical compounds than in the control one. Statistical analysis of the obtained results pointed out that the average index of intensity of changes in paradontium and the susceptibility to changes evaluated according to DMF index also shows higher values in the examined group as compared with the control. The frequency of occurrence of various pathological changes including leukoplakia of the mucosa was presented in detail. All collected data were divided into five groups of different exposure to the chemicals.

[Cytochemical and immunological studies of workers exposed to organic solvents of paints and lacquer. III. Rosette formation and the tuberculin and distreptase skin tests].

Thirty nine workers, aged 24-56, occupationally exposed for 55-122 months to organic solvents, of paints and lacquers containing benzene, toluene and xylene, underwent E rosette test and skin reactions: tuberculinic and the one with distreptase. The findings were: reduction of the number of T lymphocytes in peripheral blood and proper immunological response of cellular type. The authors indicate that it has not been settled whether or not the observed phenomenon results from actual change in the number of T lymphocytes or from inhibiting, or damaging, the surface cellular receptors by organic solvents. The E rosette test may be useful for monitoring the biological effects of exposure to the mentioned substances.

Effects of organic solvents on behavioral performance of workers in the paint industry.

A field study was conducted to investigate the effects on central nervous system function of workers in the paint industry who were exposed daily to a mixture of organic solvents. Forty-seven solvent exposed workers and forty-seven age matched non-exposed industrial workers were examined before and after a work day with a battery of tests including simple reaction time, perceptual speed, short-term memory and critical flicker fusion. A questionnaire was used to assess subjective symptoms. The exposed group consisted of workers who had been occupationally exposed for more than 10 years or were exposed to concentrations of solvents clearly above the TLV's at the time of the investigation. On the average, the exposed workers performed less well than the non-exposed group on the tests. The differences were most pronounced for the group exposed to higher solvent concentrations. The result could be interpreted as primarily due to an acute effect.

The characteristics of tension-provoking composition and lines--as represented in Munch's paintings.

The way in which the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch conveyed the feeling of tension and anxiety to the viewer is analyzed, taking into account composition, form and characteristics of lines. This is in contradiction to the conventional way of content analysis. It is suggested that such an analysis may contribute to a better understanding of the way in which professional artists as well as emotionally disturbed patients express their emotions and convey them to the viewer. This may probably be used as an additional means for better evaluation of emotions in paintings.

The black paintings and the Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome.

Francisco Goya, the Spanish painter, suffered from a disease of uncertain etiology which affected his vision, hearing, and balance. The nature of his illness probably was a curious syndrome known today as Vogt-Koyanagi=Harada or uveomeningoencephalytic syndrome. This is an autoimmune disorder which involves the visual and cochlear pigment derived from the neural crest. The common finding in all cases described in the literature is bilateral uveitis. It is interesting to speculate how the period of Goya's artistic output known as the "Black Paintings" might have been created during the time he had the disease.

Laboratory evaluation of a new repellent camouflage face paint.

A combined formulation of the U.S. Army's camouflage face paints and the new extended duration topical insect/arthropod repellent was tested on human volunteers to determine repellency and duration of protection (2-12 h) against Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi. Under laboratory conditions (27 degrees C and 80% RH), the face paint/repellent formulation provided > or = 95% repellency or better for up to 6 h for Ae. aegypti and 8 h for An. stephensi. An analysis of variance showed no significant differences in the repellent efficacy of the 4 camouflage colors: white, green, loam, and sand.

Work place challenge: spirometric response in polyurethane (isocyanate) paint workers.

In industrialised countries, isocyanate is probably the most common cause of occupational asthma. The present study was conducted to see the effect on FEV1 in workers who were directly exposed to isocyanate. One hundred and fourteen workers of a rail coach factory who were involved in polyurethane paint spray were studied. Spirometry was done three times, first before starting the work, at two hours and then 6-8 hours after finishing the work to see immediate, late and dual responses. Positive response was considered when there was fall of 20% or more in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) from base line. Sixteen per cent of the workers exposed to isocyanate developed immediate reaction, 10% developed late reaction and 6% developed dual reaction. Non-smokers were more prone to develop late and dual responses.

[Use of biological monitoring for evaluating occupational exposure in the paint and varnish industry].

Multi-component solvent mixtures are used in the painting and varnishing industry. Trimethylbenzene (TMB approximately 50%) is a main component of these mixtures. Assessment of occupational exxposureto TMB and xylene based on the biological exposure index (capillary blood, urine) was the aim of the study. Gas chromatography with headspace technique (HP 5890/FID) was used to determine unchanged compounds in capillary blood. Gas chromatography (Chrom 5/FID; HP 5890 Series II/FID) was also employed to determine methyl- and dimethylbenzoic acid in urine. The results of the study showed that high exposure to solvents was predominant in the Automative Products Department. The TMB and xylene concentrations in capillary blood accounted for about 120 and 340 micrograms/dm3, respectively, while metabolite levels in urine were 0.65 mg/h and 90 mg/dm3 (the latter value was corrected to specific gravity d = 1.016 g/cm3). The results were remarkably below the proposed values of the biological exposure limit and suggested that the level of occupational exposure was below during the study period. The exposure index used in our study proved to be very sensitive and can be recommended as a monitoring mode to assess exposure to a single solvent or mixtures of solvents.

Outbreak of contact dermatitis related to Acticide EP paste in a paint manufacturing factory.

An outbreak of severe itching, erythematous and edematous dermatitis over the extremities and upper back developed in 8 of 17 workers in the raw-materials department of a paint manufacturing factory. The outbreak occurred during a 2-month period when Acticide EP paste (Thor Chemical, Cheshire, UK) was used in place of Metatin as a microbiocide (Acima Chemical, Buchs, Switzerland). To evaluate the frequency and the etiologic agent of this outbreak, a plant walk-through, examination and review of photographs of skin lesions followed by statistical analysis for association between the development of dermatitis and exposure to Acticide paste were performed. Three guinea pigs were subjected to patch tests comparing the dermatotoxicity of Acticide EP and Metatin. The results showed that 8 out of 17 workers (47%) suffered from contact dermatitis during the 2-month period. Stratification by occupational exposure further confirmed the association between the development of dermatitis and exposure to the Acticide paste. The dermatotoxicity test on guinea pigs revealed the marked corrosive effect of the paste and the absence of dermatotoxicity of Metatin. After the removal of the paste from the raw material, there were no new cases of contact dermatitis at the 6 month follow-up. We conclude that Acticide EP paste was the responsible offending agent. Because isothiazolinone derivatives are well-known antigens and 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one is the active ingredient in Acticide EP paste, 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one is the likely cause of the dermatitis.

[Smoking and art. History of smoking in Norway in paintings].

The habit of smoking was well-known in Norway in the first half of the sixteenth century. Tobacco-smoking is seen in Norwegian paintings. In the nineteenth century, long and artistic pipes were used by men relaxing after a pleasant dinner. In self portraits of Christian Krohg and Edvard Munch we see them smoking pipes and cigarettes surrounded by smoke. In an exhibition of portraits of Norwegian Authors, ten out of seventy authors were portrayed with a pipe, a cigar or a cigarette. There are various interpretations of the use of smoking in art. A simple explanation is that this was an accepted part of life at that time. The authors may have believed that they concentrated better when they smoked and elegance may have been of importance for many of them. The symbolic significance of cigarette-smoking has been of great value in the marketing of tobacco-products.

Reinterpretation of G-banded complex karyotypes by fluorescence in situ hybridization with chromosome-specific DNA painting probes and alpha-satellite centromere-specific DNA probes in malignant hematological disorders.

In this study, we have performed fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with chromosome-specific DNA painting probes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12 and centromere-specific DNA probes 7,10,12,17,18, and X after G-banding on the same metaphase spreads from four patients with malignant hematological disorders to more precisely interpret their complex karyotypes. The findings demonstrated that the application of combined G-banding and FISH can more accurately explain complex karyotypes of hematological malignancies. FISH can detect not only the origin of marker chromosomes, but also the complex rearrangements that cannot be identified by routine banding techniques. This approach is very important to complement the cytogenetic analysis of malignant disorders and to evaluate the role of chromosome change in the development, progression, and prognosis of tumors.

Microdissection and DOP-PCR-based reverse chromosome painting as a fast and reliable strategy in the analysis of various structural chromosome abnormalities.

Reverse chromosome painting has become a powerful tool in clinical genetics for the characterization of cytogenetically unclassifiable aberrations. In this report, the application of a sensitive and rapid procedure for the complete and precise identification of four different de novo structural chromosome abnormalities is presented. These chromosome rearrangements include a marker derived from chromosome 3(cen-q11), an interstitial deletion of chromosome 13 [del(13)(q14q22)], an unbalanced translocation [46,XY, -4, +der(4)t(4;8)(p 15.2;p21.1)] leading to Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, and a partial inverted duplication in conjunction with a partial deletion of chromosome 5p [46,XX, -5, +der(5)(:p13-p15.1::p15.1-qter)] which is responsible for the manifestation of the cri-du-chat syndrome. The importance of a fast and reliable evaluation of complex chromosome aberrations in pre- and postnatal diagnosis with regard to comprehensive genetic counselling is emphasized.
