Using an Internet grant and scholarship notification service as a research tool.

By using specific key words, clinicians can use an Internet database service to identify federally funded grant and scholarship opportunities--opportunities more frequently sought by basic scientists. The authors hypothesized that such an Internet service could be used as a research tool to examine and compare the clinical research preferences of potential medical and bioscience investigators. The authors selected 577 key words from an online key word thesaurus used by both the federal government and ScienceWise.com. These key words formed a survey instrument to measure the research interests of 40 family medicine academic faculty members of a college of osteopathic medicine. The findings were compared to a survey by ScienceWise.com of its 102,578 subscribers and to previous surveys of nonacademic clinicians. Results indicate an efficient means of determining research interests as well as a method of alerting academic clinicians/nonclinicians and basic scientists to current funding opportunities.

[Natural and unnatural death: assessment of the manner of death by nursing home physicians and notification to the medical examiner].

The assessment of the manner of death by physicians is often a problem due to unclear regulations on this point. By means of a questionnaire we investigated how 40 nursing home physicians assess the manner of death in 14 different hypothetic cases and whether the physicians should report the case to the medical examiner if confronted with similar cases in practice. Some cases of unnatural death would not be reported. Especially in cases of death after a collum fracture the law and medical practice diverge. The reasons to report or not to the medical examiner were also investigated. Death fitting in the 'descending line of life' was most mentioned.

Hepatitis A and travel abroad: a study of notifications in Birmingham.

One hundred and seventy-two cases of viral hepatitis A (or 'infective hepatitis' or 'infective jaundice' judged to be viral hepatitis A) were notified in Birmingham in the 15 months from January 1990 to March 1991. Forty patients had travelled abroad in the three months prior to onset, 30 of whom had been to the Indian subcontinent. A survey of general practitioners attending to patients going abroad indicated that human normal immunoglobulin (HNIG) was rarely given to intending travellers, whereas other recommended immunisations often were. Furthermore, a sizeable proportion of travellers did not attend their general practitioners prior to departure. Interventions aimed at encouraging attendance, and the administration of HNIG prior to travel to endemic areas, could reduce the incidence of hepatitis A substantially, particularly in areas with a large population of Asian origin.
