[Marriages, divorces, and number of children: life tables on the family life cycle in Austria].

A multistate life table approach to the analysis of the family life cycle is outlined. "After calculating one-dimensional nuptiality and divorce tables and presenting a recently developed model of a fertility table based on parity, a multi-state model is described in which the cells represent all possible combinations of marital status and parity." The model is applied to data from the 1976 and 1981 micro-censuses of Austria. Findings regarding marriage, divorce, fertility, and fertility differentials by education are discussed. Determinants of age at marriage of females in India.

"In the present paper some socio-economic determinants of female nuptiality in India have been discussed. An integrated path analysis approach is adopted to ascertain the direct, indirect and joint effect of the socio-economic factors on the age at marriage of females in rural and urban areas of various states of India. From the analysis, it became evident that effective literacy is the most dominant factor influencing the age at marriage of the females. Poverty is also a contributing factor in preventing a rise in the age at marriage."

Changing marriage behaviour: some European comparisons.

"This paper analyses the recent changes in marriage behaviour in Western Europe, concentrating on four aspects: a) trends in first marriages, b) nonmarital cohabitation, c) extra-marital fertility, and d) premarital pregnancies." The results indicate a general decline in first marriages, an increase in consensual unions, an increase in fertility outside marriage, and, in many countries, fewer premarital conceptions being legalized through marriage. The author suggests that these trends indicate a decline in the importance of the legal aspects of marriage rather than a change in pair bonding values. (summary in FRE, ITA)

[Remarriage or cohabitation after divorce: the hypothesis of status integration].

"The aim of the research project is to assess which factors determine remarriage or cohabitation after divorce [in Belgium]. The research is based on data of 766 divorcees whose divorce took place in 1978. The chances of remarriage [or] cohabitation were evaluated using proportional hazard models and loglinear analysis. Special attention was paid to the effects of the number of children and age." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND FRE)
