AIDS and the mycoses.

Profoundly immunoincompetent, patients with AIDS are vulnerable to myriad opportunistic bacterial, viral, protozoal, and fungal pathogens. Opportunistic infections in patients with AIDS are often severe, persistent, and relapsing despite appropriate therapy. Some infections are virtually untreatable. This article describes the mycotic complications in these patients.

The pathogenesis of opportunistic mycoses in man.

A variety of fungi capable of growth at around 37 degrees C are potential pathogens of suitably compromised animals, including man. While awareness of diseases by these opportunistic fungi is increasing, details of their pathogenesis are largely unknown, although ability of the host to inhibit spore germination appears to be central to resistance to infection.
