Protein-losing enteropathy secondary to intestinal lymphangiectasia in a dog.

Protein-losing enteropathy secondary to intestinal lymphangiectasia was diagnosed in a 1 1/2 -year-old female Doberman Pinscher. Poor growth rate, intermittent diarrhea, ascites, edema, hypoproteinemia, grossly dilated intestinal lymphatics, and impaired fat absorption characterized the disease. There was histopathologic evidence of dilatation of lacteals and excessive chromium (51Cr)-labeled human albumin in the feces following its intravenous administration. Sixteen weeks of a special diet (high in carbohydrates and medium-chain triglycerides; low in long-chain triglycerides) led to remission of clinical signs. Serum albumin increased over its initial value of 1.09 to 1.7 g/dl, while serum globulin increased from 1.71 to 1.9 g/dl. Following 9 months of dietary therapy, serum albumin increased to 2.1 g/dl and serum globulin increased to 2.6 g/dl.

[Intestinal lymphangiectasia in exudative enteropathy (author's transl)].

Clinical symptoms and diagnostic procedures in a 12 1/2 years old girl with protein-losing enteropathy due to intestinal lymphangiectasia are reported. The child had suffered from intestinal protein loss, hypoproteinemia, hypocalcemia and lymphocytopenia. Dietary fat reduction and medium chain triglyceride formula diet made all the symptoms disappear.

[Radiological aspects of viral respiratory diseases in childhood].

The radiological diagnosis of viral pneumopathy must be backed up by laboratory examinations. There are several lung dysplasias that my mimic viral pneumopathy, especially in the newborn. Reference is also made to the radiological techniques applicable in the investigation of upper airway virosis in children. Note is taken of the fact that several forms typical of the first and second period of childhood are currently encountered in children undergoing immunodepressive therapy.

Lymphangiectasia of the small intestine as an acute surgical problem.

Two cases of lymphangiectasia of the small intestine in elderly women are presented. The condition manifested itself in one case by a sudden perforation of the jejunum; in the other case by ileus of the terminal ileum. In both cases the disease process pursued a relentless course that ultimately led to the death of the patients. Elective surgery in patients with lymphangiectasia has been performed before. Acute surgery of lymphangiectasia of the small intestine with complaints of acute abdomen, obstruction or perforation as presenting signs of the disease has not been described previously.
