Resonant mechanisms of inelastic light scattering by low-dimensional electron gases.

The contribution of elementary excitations in low-dimensional electron gases to resonant inelastic light scattering is found to be determined by interband transitions involving states at specific wave vectors. In modulation-doped GaAs/GaAlAs quantum wells, we detect only the single-particle excitations (SPE) at resonances with electron-hole transitions at the Fermi wave vector, and only plasmons at resonances with zone-center excitons. The plasmon cross section is comparable to the SPE when double electronic resonance is achieved by tuning the plasmon energy to a valence subband separation.

High-angular-momentum states in cold Rydberg gases.

Cold, dense Rydberg gases produced in a cold-atom trap are investigated using spectroscopic methods and time-resolved electron counting. Optical excitation on the discrete Rydberg resonances reveals long-lasting electron emission from the Rydberg gas ( >20 ms). Our observations are explained by lm-mixing collisions between Rydberg atoms and slow electrons that lead to the population of long-lived high-angular-momentum Rydberg states. These atoms thermally ionize slowly and with large probabilities.

Magnetization measurements of magnetic two-dimensional electron gases.

We directly measure the magnetization of both the conduction electrons and Mn2+ ions in (Zn,Cd,Mn)Se two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) by integrating them into ultrasensitive micromechanical magnetometers. The interplay between spin and orbital energy in these magnetic 2DEGs causes Landau level degeneracies at the Fermi energy. These Landau level crossings result in novel features in the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations, which are quantitatively reproduced by a simple model.

Is the particle current a relevant feature in driven lattice gases?

By performing extensive Monte Carlo simulations we show that the infinitely fast driven lattice gas (IDLG) shares its critical properties with the randomly driven lattice gas (RDLG). All the measured exponents, scaling functions, and amplitudes are the same in both cases. This strongly supports the idea that the main relevant nonequilibrium effect in driven lattice gases is the anisotropy (present in both IDLG and RDLG) and not the particle current (present only in the IDLG). This result, at odds with the predictions from the standard theory for the IDLG, supports a recently proposed alternative theory. The case of finite driving fields is also briefly discussed.

Classical-field method for time dependent Bose-Einstein condensed gases.

We propose a method to study the time evolution of Bose-Einstein condensed gases perturbed from an initial thermal equilibrium, based on the Wigner representation of the N-body density operator. We show how to generate a collection of random classical fields sampling the initial Wigner distribution in the number conserving Bogoliubov approximation. The fields are then evolved with the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We illustrate the method with the damping of a collective excitation of a one-dimensional Bose gas.

Measurement of ultrafast ionization dynamics of gases by multipulse interferometric frequency-resolved optical gating.

Ultrafast ionization dynamics of femtosecond laser-irradiated noble and simple diatomic gases were studied using a novel two-color time-domain technique which eliminated significant complications seen in past experiments. Ultrafast depletion of the probing laser pulse was observed strictly coincident with the ionization front and attributed to a previously unobserved nonlinear frequency mixing via the transverse plasma current [F. Brunel, J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 7, 52 (1990)]. Good quantitative agreement of the measured single-atom ionization rates with Ammosov-Delone-Krainov rates was found, except for O (2) which showed a 200x smaller rate.

Tuning the dipolar interaction in quantum gases.

We have studied the tunability of the interaction between permanent dipoles in Bose-Einstein condensates. Based on time-dependent control of the anisotropy of the dipolar interaction, we show that even the very weak magnetic dipole coupling in alkali gases can be used to excite collective modes. Furthermore, we discuss how the effective dipolar coupling in a Bose-Einstein condensate can be tuned from positive to negative values and even switched off completely by fast rotation of the orientation of the dipoles.

Rapid transport of gases in carbon nanotubes.

We report atomistic simulations for both self- and transport diffusivities of light gases in carbon nanotubes and in two zeolites with comparable pore sizes. We find that transport rates in nanotubes are orders of magnitude faster than in the zeolites we have studied or in any microporous material for which experimental data are available. The exceptionally high transport rates in nanotubes are shown to be a result of the inherent smoothness of the nanotubes. We predict that carbon nanotube membranes will have fluxes that are orders of magnitude greater than crystalline zeolite membranes.

Hydrodynamic modes in dense trapped ultracold gases.

We consider the hydrodynamic modes for dense trapped ultracold gases, where the interparticle distance is comparable to the scattering length. We show that the experimental determination of the hydrodynamic mode frequencies allows one to obtain quite directly the equation of state of a dense gas. As an example, we investigate the case of two equal fermionic populations in different hyperfine states with attractive interaction.

Dynamics of freely cooling granular gases.

We study dynamics of freely cooling granular gases in two dimensions using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. We find that for dilute systems the typical kinetic energy decays algebraically with time, E(t) approximately t(-1), and velocity statistics are characterized by a universal Gaussian distribution in the long time limit. We show that in the late clustering regime particles move coherently as typical local velocity fluctuations, Deltav, are small compared with the typical velocity, Deltav/v approximately t(-1/4). Furthermore, locally averaged shear modes dominate over acoustic modes. The small thermal velocity fluctuations suggest that the system can be heuristically described by Burgers-like equations.

Stability and phase coherence of trapped 1D Bose gases.

We discuss stability and phase coherence of 1D trapped Bose gases and find that inelastic decay processes, such as three-body recombination, are suppressed in the strongly interacting (Tonks-Girardeau) and intermediate regimes. This is promising for achieving these regimes with a large number of particles. "Fermionization" of the system reduces the phase coherence length, and at T=0 the gas is fully phase coherent only deeply in the weakly interacting (Gross-Pitaevskii) regime.

Spin-charge separation in ultracold quantum gases.

We investigate the physical properties of quasi-1D quantum gases of fermionic atoms confined in harmonic traps. Using the fact that for a homogeneous gas the low-energy properties are exactly described by a Luttinger model, we analyze the nature and manifestations of spin-charge separation, where in the case of atoms "spin" and "charge" refer to two internal atomic states and the atomic mass density, respectively. We discuss the necessary physical conditions and experimental limitations confronting possible experimental implementations.

Double incoherent Raman scattering induced by molecular interactions in gases.

A new Raman band is observed in two gases, CF4 and CH4. It is attributable to a double incoherent Raman scattering that takes place in pairs of interacting molecules. Spectral scattering intensities are given on an absolute scale. Zero order spectral moments are measured and are found higher than their long-range interaction value.

Dynamics of Lieb-Liniger gases.

It is proved that the Lieb-Liniger cusp condition implementing the delta function interaction in one-dimensional Bose gases is dynamically conserved under phase imprinting by pulses of arbitrary spatial form, and the subsequent many-body dynamics in the thermodynamic limit is expressed approximately in terms of solutions of the time-dependent single-particle Schrödinger equation for a set of time-dependent orbitals evolving from an initial Lieb-Liniger-Fermi sea. As an illustrative application, a generation of gray solitons in a Lieb-Liniger gas on a ring by a phase-imprinting pulse is studied.

Feshbach resonance in dense ultracold Fermi gases.

We propose a coherent framework allowing one to treat many-body effects in dense ultracold Fermi gases in the presence of a Feshbach resonance. We show that the simple effect of Pauli exclusion induces a strong modification of the basic scattering properties. In particular, this washes out the Feshbach resonance and provides a natural explanation for recent experimental findings.

Instabilities in binary mixtures of one-dimensional quantum degenerate gases.

We show that one-dimensional binary mixtures of bosons or of a boson and a spin-polarized fermion are Luttinger liquids with the following instabilities: (i) For different particle densities, strong attraction between the mixture components leads to collapse, while strong repulsion leads to demixing, and (ii) For a low-density mixture of two gases of impenetrable bosons (or a spin-polarized fermion and an impenetrable boson) of equal densities, the system develops a gap and exhibits enhanced pairing fluctuations when there is attraction between the components. In the boson-fermion mixture, the pairing fluctuations occur at finite momentum. Our conclusions apply to mixtures both on the continuum and on optical lattices away from integer or fractional commensurability.

Universal thermodynamics of degenerate quantum gases in the unitarity limit.

We perform a systematic study of the thermodynamics of quantum gases in the unitarity limit. Our study is based on a "universality hypothesis" for the relevant energy scales which is supported by experiments and can be proven in the Boltzmann regime. It implies a universal form for the grand potential, which is specified by only a few universal numbers in the degenerate limit. This hypothesis provides a simple way to determine the density profile of a trapped fermion superfluid. It implies a superfluid bump in the density and gives the general expression of the second sound velocity of a homogeneous superfluid at unitarity.

Collisions in zero temperature Fermi gases.

We examine the collisional behavior of two-component Fermi gases released at zero temperature from a harmonic trap. Using a phase-space formalism to calculate the collision rate during expansion, we find that Pauli blocking plays only a minor role for momentum changing collisions. As a result, for a large scattering cross section, Pauli blocking will not prevent the gas from entering the collisionally hydrodynamic regime. In contrast to the bosonic case, hydrodynamic expansion at very low temperatures is therefore not evidence for fermionic superfluidity.
