A cost-effectiveness model was designed to explore the effect of adding a new angiotensin-II inhibitor, telmisartan, to the therapeutic options for treating mild-to-moderate uncomplicated hypertension. Incorporating the cost of drugs, physician visits, and adverse-event treatments, the model concluded that availability of telmisartan on formulary may shorten the mean time and costs to control. The stability of the initial findings over a range of sensitivity analyses lends credence to the model conclusions that availability of telmisartan on formulary improves the therapeutic options of care for hypertension.

Governments face enormous challenges in managing escalating expenditures under their prescription drug plans while providing access to new, cost effective therapies. Strategies to address cost pressures must be considered carefully, however, to ensure the achievement of optimum health outcomes. Alberta has adopted an inclusive approach in addressing utilization and cost issues through a variety of advisory processes and initiatives supported by the Minister of Health and Wellness. The Expert Committee on Drug Evaluation and Therapeutics advises the Minister on Alberta's government-sponsored drug programs and related policy matters. The Alberta Management Committee on Drug Utilization, co-chaired by the Alberta Medical Association and the Pharmacists Association of Alberta, is mandated to oversee the implementation of a number of drug utilization initiatives. The Pharmaceutical Information Network is the cornerstone project of Alberta Wellnet, supported by a unique multistakeholder task force that includes physicians, pharmacists, representatives from health regions and government. Recent successful program launches in Alberta include a palliative drug program, trial prescription program and the multiple sclerosis drug program. Successes in Alberta reinforce the importance of government's role in achieving optimum pharmacotherapy. This role can only be undertaken in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Uninsured HIV-infected people in New York who earn less than $44,000 per year, which is more than 500% of the federal poverty level, may choose from six protease inhibitors, three non-nucleosides, 16 opportunistic infection prophylaxis drugs, and 408 other medications from the state AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), according to the 2001 National ADAP Monitoring Project Report. In other states, however, the selection is much slimmer.

Wang Ang wrote a lot of books on medicine. Although he made contribution in the aspects of practicability, circulated dimension, and the popularization and the advancing of medicine, his achievement is mainly focused in the field of methodology of prescription. His book of prescription, Variorum of Medical Recipes, is simple, practical, reasoning, and concentrated on the main points. So, this book can be used as an introduction to prescription, as well as a good reading for prescription methodology.
In ancient times, the medicaments used to be sweetened with honey. Subsequently, the Arab apothecaries progressively replaced it by sugar, as witnessed by their formularies, that were known as grabadins. These were introduced to the West as from the XIth century A.D. The latin world also produced its very own formularies, of which the Antidotarium magnum (circa 1100) and the Antidotarium Mesuae (appearing at around the same period) are the most famous. The latter accords to sugar a place of honour and has recourse to it for the best part of the formulae intended for internal usage (namely syrops, julebs, electuaries, loochs, aromatic powders, condita, conservae, etc.) whilst not abandoning the use of honey.
After the discovery of iodine by Courtois in 1812, this metal was very much in vogue for all the XIXth century for the treatment of numerous diseases. Antoine de Finance (1846-1898), family physician, described iodine and iodine derivatives usage in his own formulary, following the usual contemporary references (Bouchardat, Dorvault). As for those references, iodine was useful for diseases as different as lung diseases, tumors and syphilis but he added angor. As opposed to Bouchardat that used more than 129 formulations for iodine and iodine derivatives, Antoine de Finance is limited to 6 of them. This trend of using iodine for medicine will continue after the XIXth century and will remain essential at the beginning of the XXth century with the discovery of stable iodinated oils such as Lipiodol created in 1901 and first used for syphilis. This therapeutic usage of iodine will remain until today for preventive and curative treatment of iodine deficiency disorders.
