[Study of determination method for zinc in semen and liquor folliculi of artificial fecundation].

Zinc one of the key elements that influence human genetic health, was selectively determined in this paper. In the area of metal elements determination in body fluid, most samples used in the study are blood, plasma and saliva. No literature about genetic fluid determination has been found so far. In this paper the preparation of samples, volume of samples and determination parameters were investigated. An easy reliable method of determining zinc in semen and liquor folliculi was established. The recoveries are 92.0%-107.6%, the detection limit is 0.002 mg x L(-1) and the relative standard deviations (RSD) (n = 5) are 1.3%-10.0%.

[Consequences on women's fecundity and on assisted reproductive technology].

Knowledge of the detrimental role of cigarette smoking on human reproduction is constantly improving. In natural fertility, time to pregnancy is longer, frequency of infertility is increased and fertility rate declines 10% to 20% with a dose-effect relationship. Moreover, women exposed in utero also have lower fertility. Cigarette smoking is also a risk factor for menstrual disorders and for early menopause. In assisted reproductive technology, where many parameters are controlled, the deleterious effects of smoking on fertility have been clearly demonstrated: lower estradiol levels, decreased pregnancy and implantation rates, and poorer oocyte morphology. The two published meta-analyses have concluded that the effects are the same in natural and assisted reproduction. These results are in accordance with biological hypotheses on the local and general effect of tobacco and other cigarettes components. In conclusion, women should be informed about the effect of cigarette smoking on their fertility. Education is very important since in many countries, like France, the percentage of smokers is increasing among women, especially among young women.

[Cancer and fecundity].

The overall increase in relative survival rates of adult and childhood cancer patients is related to improved chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment protocols. However, this success is tempered by gonadotoxic effects and uterine damage. The reduced fertility and possible premature menopause can have a profound impact on patients self-esteem and quality of life. Consequently, preservation of fertility or treatments to protect the ovarian function, become a more relevant issue. Advances in assisted reproduction techniques have focused on the following: embryo cryopreservation which is restricted by time and constrains such as, sexual maturity and the presence of a stable partner. Cryopreservation of immature ovarian tissue, the most promising option, with restoration of natural fertility following auto-transplantation or maturation of oocytes in vitro in combination with assisted reproduction.

[A fecundity study of the larvivorous fish Rivulus cylindraceus Poey, 1860 (Cyrinodontiformes: Cyrinodontidae), a bioregulator agent of culicids under, laboratory conditions].

For a successful use of larvivorous fishes as bioregulators of mosquito larvae, deep biological knowledge of such fishes is required. This paper intends to be a contribution to the study of the reproduction of the Rivulus cylindraceus, living in brackish waters of canals close to the coasts. Laboratory research showed that females kept reproducing through all the year, especially in December, February and March. As an average, oviposition was 3 (1-21) eggs; fertility increased with the size of the female. The longest uninterrupted oviposition was 12 days.

Growth and fecundity of Schistosoma japonicum in mice maintained at different environmental temperatures.

On weeks 7 and 9 post infection (PI), the number of Schistosoma japonicum in mice maintained at low (5 degrees C) and high (32 degrees C and 35 degrees C) temperatures did not differ from those in controls (25 degrees C), but shorter males were observed in hosts at 5 degrees C. Further, both male and female worms recovered on week 7 PI from mice kept at 35 degrees C were shorter than those recovered from controls. Staining analysis revealed that worm maturation was not affected in mice kept at 5 degrees C and 32 degrees C. However, some female worms from mice kept at 35 degrees C had no eggs in the uterus. The day of patency of worms in the temperature-stressed mice did not differ from that in controls. EPG in mice kept at 32 degrees C rose to a high level on weeks 7-8 PI which was about 10 times as many as those in control mice, while EPG in mice kept at 5 degrees C appeared to be lower than in controls. The 7-week tissue egg count revealed that the hot- and cold-stressed mice supported significantly less egg productivity per female worm than control mice. The environmental temperature could not alter the migration pattern of schistosomula from the skin to lungs in mice.

Dynamics of egg production of the cestode Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) and the concept of fecundity in helminths.

The dynamics of egg production of the tapeworm D. dendriticum has been estimated experimentally in nestlings of the herring gull Larus argentatus per day and per reproductive period. Numbers of eggs in strobilae have been estimated for the maturation period. Mean egg production, of one tapeworm per day (10.42 +/- 2.72 mln) is two orders of magnitude as high as the maximal number of eggs in a mature strobila (0.206 +/- 0.007). It is proposed to estimate the coefficient of reproduction intensity as the ratio of egg output per unit of time and maximum egg numbers in a mature strobila.
