Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in feces of pregnant women with and without direct animal contact.

Women under policlinic control during their pregnancy were divided into 3 groups, viz. women living on farms with animals, women having pet-animals in their home and women without any direct contact with living animsla. 5-7 feces samples were controlled for L. monocytogenes during pregnancy and puerperium, together with one sample of meconium of the neonate. Of women from farms, with pet-animals and women without living animal contact, respectively 32%, 39% and 34% of the samples were positive. From a total of 1337 samples 116 (8,8%) were positive. From 87 meconium samples all but one were negative. The results obtained support the hypothesis, that L. monocytogenes is an ubuquitous organism without typical zoonotic characteristics, although infection through animals may occur.

Characterization of Aeromonas hydrophila: a comparative study of strains isolated from diarrheal feces and the environment.

Thirty-five strains of Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from feces of diarrheal patients and from the environments were collected from Thailand and Japan. The physiological, biochemical, and serological characteristics, antibiotic resistance patterns and cell surface-related properties were compared. The diarrheal and environmental isolates of A hydrophila were found to be remarkably consistent in general culture and biochemical characteristics, with the exception of the reaction to D-arabinose in which the diarrheal strains were positive and environmental strains were negative. The plasmid patterns and cell surface-related properties of the environmental and diarrheal isolates were different. All strains produced Vero cell cytotoxin, hemolysin and lecithinase at 37 degrees, 30 degrees and 15 degrees C. In contrast, 83% of the environmental strains produced these virulence factors even at 4 degrees C. All strains indicated almost uniform susceptibility to the 16 antibiotics tested. Variations were found in the plasmid profile, toxin production in relation to the differences of temperature and cell surface-related properties of the strains. These variations between the clinical and environmental isolates could have potential as epidemiological markers for the sources of strains.

[Verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC) in feces from cattle slaughtered in Germany].

In man, EHEC infections may result in severe disease. Cattle and foods derived from this animal species are considered as a source of infection. The presence of VTEC being potential EHEC was studied. For analysis, feces samples were examined which had been taken from 204 heads of cattle slaughtered in various regions of Germany. VTEC could be isolated from 97 animals (47.6%). This indicates a presence of VTEC in slaughtered cattle being 5 times higher than known for Germany so far. The aeaA gene could be demonstrated in a mere 23 out of 667 VTEC isolates. The CVD 419 sequence was present in 55.3% of the VTEC isolates. Ehly was found in 61% of them. Consequently, both markers were unsuitable for the detection of VTEC in faeces samples from cattle and in foods with faecal contamination. The VTEC isolates belonged to 54 different serotypes of E. coli, VTEC 0157 have not been found so far. Some of the VTEC serovars found in this study have already been described as associated with human disease following EHEC infection. The presently available laboratory methods do not permit to exclude a risk for humans from bovine VTEC reliably. For this reason, bovine VTEC should be further on considered as potential EHEC and an infection of humans by such agents be avoided.

[The significance of individual carboxylic acids in the feces in the diagnosis of dysbacteriosis].

During the survey of children with different state of intestinal microflora the amount of carboxylic acids excreted with feces by these children was found to depend on the degree of the microecological imbalance of the intestine. As revealed in this study, significant changes in the excretion of a number of volatile fatty acids released as metabolites of intestinal microflora were observed as early as at the initial stages of the development of microbiological imbalance.

[Use of the swarming phenomenon for the purpose of isolating pure cultures of salmonellae from feces. I].

The authors elaborated and tested a number of elective-differential media for swarming of salmonellae. When pure cultures of Proteus, E. coli and salmonellae were seded on these media the latter exeeded the rest of enteric bacteria by the intensity of swarming. In the capacity of saprophyte inhibitors the most effective were media with the addition of penicillin and sodium selenite. Satisfactory results were obtained on the mentioned media in isolation of salmonellae from the artificially contaminated feces by the method of swarming

Isolation of Salmonella serotypes from feces of pigs raised in a multiple-site production system.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and serotypes of Salmonella organisms in feces of pigs raised in a modern, multiple-site production system. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of prevalence. SAMPLE POPULATION: Swine housed on 7 farms (1 gilt development farm, 2 breeding farms, 1 nursery farm, and 3 finishing farms) that formed a multiplesite production system. PROCEDURE: Fecal samples were obtained from 792 pigs (96 to 202/farm) and submitted for bacteriolgic culture of Salmonella organisms. RESULTS: Salmonellae were isolated from pigs on all 7 farms and from 95 of 792 (12%) fecal samples. Prevalence ranged from 3.4% at the gilt development farm to 18 and 22% at the breeding farms. Serotypes identified were Salmonella derby, S typhimurium var. copenhagen, S heidelberg, S typhimurium, S mbandaka, S worthington, and S tennessee. No single serotype was not isolated from all the farms of the production system and the most prevalent serotypes at the 3 finishing farms (S typhimurium or S typhimurium var. copenhagen) were not isolated from the breeding or nursery farms. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Upstream infection (pigs infected before arriving at finishing farms) appears to be an unimportant source of Salmonella infection of finished hogs in multiple-site systems. High prevalence of Salmonella shedding in breeding animals suggests that food products derived from culled breeding livestock may be an important source of foodborne disease.

A new technic for counting Schistosoma japonicum eggs in pig feces.

An improved laboratory method was developed for counting Schistosoma japonicum eggs in pig feces, which involves filtration, sedimentation and centrifugation, but avoids toxic chemicals. It is sensitive, allows easy differentiation from similar-sized and shaped protozoan cysts, and permits evaluation of egg viability both by direct viewing of eggs and miracidial hatching. It was found to be significantly better at recovering eggs than the modified Bell filtration technic. The sensitivity, specificity and practicality of this technic make it our method of choice for studies on porcine schistosomiasis japonica.

Isolation of Bacillus cereus in the feces of healthy adults in Taipei City.

Fecal specimens from 100 healthy adults were collected and examined for the presence of Bacillus cereus which has been associated with 28% of the outbreaks of food poisoning on Taiwan within the last 3 years. Total isolate rate from these specimens was 8%. Variations in isolation rates were found not only in sexes, but also in different age-groups. Therefore, presence of B. cereus in the feces of healthy adults may be unpredictable and relate to foods consumed or to other factors. Obviously, an isolation rate of B. cereus as high as 30% during the outbreak investigation is still not a strong evidence to implicate this organism as an etiological agent.

Development and ultrastructure of first-generation meronts of Sarcocystis cruzi in calves fed sporocysts from coyote feces.

The development of Sarcocystis cruzi Hasselmann (syn. S. fusiformis Railliet) meronts was studied in seven 7- to 10-day-old calves filled 4, 7, 11, 15, 22, 25 and 28 days postinoculation (DPI) with 5 x 10(7) sporocysts from feces of coyotes. No meronts were found 4 and 7 DPI. Young and intermediate meronts with 1-16 nuclei were found in endothelial cells of arteries in mesenteric lymph nodes, but not in kidneys 11 DPI. Mature meronts were noted in endothelial cells of arteries, arterioles, or capillaries of many organs of calves killed 15 to 25 DPI. No first-generation meronts were found 28 DPI. By electron microscopy, all stages of the first-generation merogony were found free within the host cell cytoplasm and not within a parasitophorous vacuole. The appearance of intranuclear spindles preceded the formation of merozoites by endopolygeny. Mature meronts measured 41.0 x 17.5 (34-50 x 15-24) microgram, contained approximately 100-350 merozoites, and had 2 to 4 relatively small residual bodies, 2.8 microgram in diameter. Merozoites measured 6.3 x 1.5 (5.5-7 x 1 microgram) and contained most of the organelles characteristically found in coccidian merozoites. Micropores were observed in merozoites, but not in young and intermediate meronts. Merozoites were seen free in the lumen of blood vessels, in intracellular areas, and free within the host cell cytoplasm.

Early developmental stages of Sarcocystis cruzi in calf fed sporocysts from coyote feces.

The development of Sarcocystis cruzi was studied in an 11-day-old calf killed seven days postinoculation with 5 x 10(8) sporocysts from feces of coyotes. Uninucleate zoites were found in arteries of mesenteric lymph nodes but not in other organs. Zoites measured 4.9 x 3.0 (3.5-7.0 x 2.1-3.5) micrometers. Of the 36 zoites studied, 31 were in endothelial cells, four were in macrophages in the lumen of arteries, and one was free in the lumen of an artery. Infected endothelial cells were two to three times larger than uninfected cells. Zoites appeared structurally similar to sporozoites. The occurrence of zoites in macrophages suggests that sporozoites of Sarcocystis might use such cells to reach the site of their first merogony.

Occurrence of human-associated yeasts in the feces and pool waters of captive bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Total yeast counts at 20 and 37 C incubation from chlorinated salt water pools containing marine mammals averaged 40 per L and 12 per L, respectively. Candida albicans, the etiological agent of candidiasis in mammals, was found in 32% of 123 water samples although numbers were low (average of 1.2 cells per L). The yeast was isolated only once from feces from one Atlantic bottlenosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) but was recovered from three fecal samples from an asymptomatic beluga whale (Delphinapteras leucas) which suggested that this animal may be a carrier. Three yeasts (Candida tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and Torulopsis glabrata) associated with human disease accounted for 73% and 88%, respectively, of the 37 C isolates from water and animals. The data indicate the routine presence of potentially pathogenic yeasts in water and various marine mammals. Captive environments characterized by antimicrobial treatment (e.g., chlorine) may provide appropriate conditions for resistant microorganisms, including yeasts, to become opportunistic pathogens in susceptible marine mammals or to become established in others which act as healthy carriers.

[Clinical study of immunotherapy for bronchial asthma using purified mite feces antigen].

For many years, hyposensitization therapy was considered to be a radical therapy for allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma. Adverse effects including the inducement of asthma attacks or anaphylactic shock were attributed to the use of crude antigen solution during treatment. To contribute to the establishment of safer and more effective approaches, we conducted immunotherapy trials using purified mite feces antigen. Among the antigen fractions that were separated and purified for this purpose, the HM 2 antigen fraction with a molecular weight in the 30-40 kD range was found to be the most suitable for use. Treatment utilizing this fraction achieved favorable outcomes. Of 25 patients with nonseasonal asthma, the clinical outcome of treatment was "markedly improved" in 7, "moderately improved" in 11, "slightly improved" in 3, "unchanged" in 4, and "worsened" in none. Also, 4 of 5 patients with seasonal asthma experienced a cessation of seasonal attacks. Among factors that affect therapeutic efficacy, high Df-RAST scores and a history of childhood asthma were considered to be particularly important.

[Intestinal obstruction with feces (meconium ileus equivalent) in the course of mucoviscidosis. Radiographic diagnosis (author's transl].

Meconium ileus equivalent is a late intestinal occlusion occurring in patients suffering from mucoviscidosis. Three cases are reported in children aged, respectively, 3 years, 6 years and 10 years. In one of the observations (three year old girl), the intestinal obstruction with feces was first manifestation of a mucoviscidosis that was previously undetected. The radiological signs are identical to those found in cases of neonatal meconium ileus: intestinal obstruction and accumulation of closely spaced matter in a distended ileum (terminal part). As in cases of meconium ileus without complications, treatment consisted of enemas with water-soluble products. The high osmotic pressure of these products made it possible to remove the obstruction.

Cryptococcus neoformans in pigeon feces in San Francisco.

Typical Cryptococcus neoformans was isolated from one of 10 specimens of pigeon feces collected in downtown San Francisco. This isolation from a small sample suggests considerable prevalence of this important pathogen and tends to confirm that it is ubiquitous.
