Confirmation of dialysate leakage by intraperitoneal administration of radioactive colloid.

A 29-year-old man who had been on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) was admitted to our hospital because of pleural effusion. Radioactive colloid studies with intraperitoneal administration revealed a pleuroperitoneal communication. After pleurodesis by the administration of fibrin glue and antiplasmin into the thoracic cavity, the pleural effusion did not reaccumulate and there was no evidence of pleuroperitoneal communication by radioactive colloid study.

[Study on the preparation of nanometer oxide SnO2 gas-sensitive material by sol-gel method].

Based on the sol-gel method, nanosized SnO2 material was prepared, and its structure and properties were studied by XRD, UV and Raman spectra. The XRD result indicated that the SnO2 particles had an ideal nanosize. The diameter of SnO2 particles increased with raising the temperature. The Raman spectrum indicated that the SnO2 nanometer material annealed at low temperature had a large number of O-empties. The UV spectra showed that the sample had stable absorption properties although the particle size changed greatly in the annealed range of 300-500 degrees C. These properties might be utilized in enhancing the performance of SnO2 gas-sensitive devices.

Influence of stannous chloride on the adhesive properties of Corynebacterium diphtheriae strains.

Stannous ion, as a chloride salt, influenced on the survival and adhesive properties of two toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae of the sucrose-fermenting (241 strain) and non-sucrose-fermenting (CDC-E8392 strain) biotypes. Differences in survival fractions suggested differences in susceptibility of strains to bactericidal effect of stannous chloride (SnCl2). A number of 0.3% bacterial cells of 241 strain and 0.02% of CDC-E8392 strain survived after 220 micro l ml(-1) SnCl2 treatment. Results of polystyrene and spontaneous autoaggregation tests showed an increase in hydrophobicity of SnCl2 treated-bacteria. Spontaneous bacterial autoaggregation was induced in the presence of SnCl2. Stannous chloride also induced adherence to glass and totally inhibited the haemagglutinating activity of the non-sucrose-fermenting CDC-E8392 strain (original titer 32). Decrease in haemagglutination was dependent on SnCl2 concentration used. The presence of SnCl2 exerted differences in the expression of diphtheria bacilli surface carbohydrates possibly related with differences in degrees of haemagglutination and adherence to glass. Lectin-binding assays showed increase in the expression of cell surface receptors to the lectin Canavalia ensiformis (Con A) with affinity for mannose-like residues. The occurrence of cell filamentation suggests genotoxicity of SnCl2 to diphtheria bacilli. SnCl2 treatment was capable of modifying cell morphology, hydrophobins and adhesin expression, suggesting ability of C. diphtheriae to withstand oxidative stressing environment. Therefore, the SnCl2, widely used in nuclear medicine as reducing agent in the 99mTc-labelling process, may influence the outcome of bacterial infections.

Interaction between stannous chloride and calcium channel blockers in frog neuromuscular transmission.

We have investigated the interactions between stannous chloride (SnCl2) and calcium (Ca) channel blockers on endplate potentials (e.p.p.) and on miniature endplate potentials (m.e.p.p.) to determine which type of channel (among L-, N-, and T-type) participates in the SnCl2-induced increase in Ca entry into motor nerve terminals. The e.p.p. amplitude augmented by 30 microM SnCl2 was decreased by cumulative addition of 10 microM CdCl2 or 0.5 microM omega-conotoxin but not by 10 microM NiCl2 or 5 microM nicardipine. The SnCl2 (30 microM)-induced rise in m.e.p.p. frequency in high-potassium medium was reduced by 0.5 microM omega-conotoxin but not by 5 microM nicardipine. These results suggest that activation of the N-type Ca channel is involved in the SnCl2-induced increase in Ca entry into the nerve terminals.

Conditions for labeling of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria with technetium-99m.

Study of the labeling of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria with technetium-99m (99mTc) at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 37 degrees C shows that the incorporation of radioactivity in this cercaria increases with the increase in stannous chloride concentration, reaching a constant value threshold at 130.00 microM. Strong binding of the 99mTc was obtained since the radioactivity was not washed out. The characteristic motion of the cercaria, labeled at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C, was only modified at the concentration of 1300 microM for both temperatures, showing that the methodology here described can be applied to living structures. With this technique it is possible to obtain a cercariae suspension labeled with a radionuclide that is very inexpensive and readily available. Furthermore, it is a gamma emitter with a photon energy of 140 keV that would permit one to make scannings of the infected animals and causes less of an environmental impact and present fewer radioactive disposal problems than the long lived radionuclides.

[Effect of heat treatment on the electrocatalytic activity of SnO2/Ti anode in degradation of p-benzoquinone].

Sb-doped SnO2/Ti anode was prepared in our lab with thermal decomposition method, and in the same time, the effect of heat treatment on the properties of the electrode also was studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface characterization of the electrodes. X-ray photoelectro-spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were carried out to study the chemical state of elements, Sn and Sb. The potentiodynamic polarization behaviors of the two anodes in different solutions were performed. Galvanostatic electrolyses were carried out at 5 mA/cm2 to study the electrocatalytic activity of the two anodes in removing organic pollutant. SEM showed that the electrodes had the same well-known cracked-mud structure, while the electrode annealed in O2 [SnO2/Ti(O2)] had more larger surface area than the electrode annealed in the air [SnO2/Ti(air)]. XPS measurements showed that the binding energies of both Sn3d(5/2) and Sb3d(5/2) of SnO2/Ti(O2) were 0.15 eV smaller than what of the SnO2/Ti(air) film. Both of the electrochemical measurements and electrolyses results confirmed that SnO2/Ti(O2) was more active in the degradation of organic pollutant. The galvanostatic electrolyses lasted until the solutions were decoloured throughly, 76.3% of total organic carbon (TOC) was removed with SnO2/Ti(O2), compared with 63.3% of SnO2/Ti(air). The similar exponential rules were driven for the variations of residual TOC concentration with two anodes.

[Determination of inorganic and organic tin in water samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry].

This paper proposed a method for the determination of inorganic tin and organotin species. Total tin contents can be directly detected by zirconium-coated graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, while the organotin was detected by hydride generation combined with solvent extraction and the difference between the total tin and organotin was inorganic tin. The detection limits were 58 pg and 27 pg for organotin and inorganic tin, respectively. The relative standard deviations of this procedure, were 2.13% and 2.04%, respectively. Several water samples were analyzed by this method. The recoveries ranging from 90.5% and 98.5% were obtained.

[Influence of novel surface treatment of ITO anodes on the performance of OLED].

The influences of surface treatments of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) anodes on the performance of OLED devices were investigated. This surface treatment is mechanical processes using a novel nanometer powder. Their surface morphology was measured by scanning using an AFM (atomic force microscope). The number and size of spike was reduced and regulation of ITO was enhanced; brightness and efficiency of devices were obviously increased. This novel way for ITO surface treatment by mechanical processes was proven to be effective.

Activation of N-type calcium channels by stannous chloride at frog motor nerve terminals.

Stannous chloride (SnCl2) increases the calcium (Ca) entry into motor nerve terminals through the voltage-dependent Ca channels. The present study has been conducted to determine which type of channel (i.e., L-, N-, or T-type) participates in the Ca entry increased by SnCl2 (0.1 mM)-induced enhancement of the inward Ca current was more strongly inhibited by CdCl2 (50 microM) or omega-conotoxin (0.1 microM) than by NiCl2 (50 microM) or nifedipine (10 microM), respectively. From the results obtained, it is concluded that SnCl2 increases the Ca entry into the nerve terminal by activating the N-type Ca channels.
