Shake and break--shaking-induced changes of size quantization in aggregated quantum dots.

We show how simple mechanical agitation of precipitated CdSe quantum dot aggregates causes partially reversible color changes (clearly visible to the eye) in the absorption spectrum of the CdSe (about 4 nm size). The color changes, which are due to changes in size quantization, are not accompanied by change in quantum dot size. This phenomenon is explained by partial deaggregation of the precipitates, leading to reduced charge overlap between neighboring dots. Shaking was shown to result in a looser aggregate structure. It is suggested that CdSO3 particles (an initial product of the CdSe formation reaction) act as weak bridges between CdSe quantum dots, mediating the interparticle interactions and allowing the deaggregation to occur on shaking.

Efficacy of dietary sodium selenite and calcium selenite provided in the diet at approved, marginally toxic, and toxic levels to growing swine.

A 2 x 3 factorial experiment conducted in three replicates of a randomized complete block design compared the effects of calcium selenite and sodium selenite at three different levels of Se (.3, 5, or 15 ppm) in the diets of growing swine on performance and tissue Se concentrations. Ninety pigs averaging 12.5 kg of BW were given ad libitum access to corn-soybean meal diets fortified with one of the treatment Se sources and dietary levels for a 35-d experimental period. Growth and feed intake were similar in pigs fed .3 and 5 ppm of Se but were lower (P less than .01) in those fed 15 ppm from either Se source. Serum Se increased (P less than .01) as dietary Se level increased with no difference between Se sources at each dietary Se level. Liver, kidney, and longissimus muscle Se concentrations increased (P less than .01) as the dietary level of Se increased and were similar when either Se sources was provided. These results indicate that calcium selenite was as effective as sodium selenite using the measurement criteria of growth, serum, and tissue Se concentrations and glutathione peroxidase activities of growing swine when fed at approved, marginally toxic, and toxic dietary Se levels.

Gram-scale synthesis of soluble, near-monodisperse gold nanorods and other anisotropic nanoparticles.

An aqueous surfactant-based colloidal chemical method is reported for the synthesis of anisotropic noble-metal nanoparticles on the milligram to multigram scale. Fine control of the nucleation-growth kinetics and rodlike micelle-induced breaking of symmetry at the early stage of particle growth are responsible for high-quality anisotropic nanoparticles. Near-monodisperse gold and silver nanorods, spheroids, nanowires, platelets, or cubes of 4-50 nm dimension and controllable aspect ratio can be prepared. The method may also be extended to semiconductor systems.

Chromate and selenate hydrocalumite solid solutions and their applications in waste treatment.

Hydrocalumite, a calcium aluminate hydrate phase, consists of positively-charged structure units, and is therefore an ideal candidate for accommodating anionic contaminants. In this study, a series of batch experiments was carried out to examine the uptake of chromate and selenate by hydrocalumite. To determine the uptake capacity and long-term stability, hydrocalumite solid solutions between chromate/selenate and hydroxyl were synthesized over a reaction time of more than one year. At a ratio of water to initial solids added (CaAl2O4+CaO) of 75:1, the maximum uptake capacities were over 77 and 114 g/kg for Cr and Se, respectively. These values are very close to the theoretical uptake capacities of chromate and selenate hydrocalumite end-members (81 and 118 g/kg, respectively). The oxyanion removal efficiency from solution was above 95%. Due to the high uptake capacity and anion removal efficiency of hydrocalumites, their application in wastewater treatment is promising. Hydrocalumites are also important hydration products of cementitious materials and the long-term stability of these phases is of significance for application in solidification/stabilization technology.

Synthesis and photoluminescence study of molecularly imprinted polymers appended onto CdSe/ZnS core-shells.

The Photoluminescence of quantum dots have been found to be a useful tool for the detection of small to medium sized analyte molecules in a host-guest environment. By the incorporation of quantum dots into molecularly imprinted polymers, which can offer shape and selectivity, the former can respond by quenching the photoluminescence emission upon template binding. In this work host polymers were synthesized and cased into thin films using functional monomers such as methacrylic acid (MAA), CdSe/ZnS core-shell derivatized with 4-vinyl pyridine and ethylene glycol dimethacrylic acid (EGDMA) as a cross-linker. The intensity of photoluminescence emission is detected upon analyte binding.

Synthesis, properties, and photodynamic properties in vitro of heavy-chalcogen analogues of tetramethylrosamine.

Thio and seleno analogues of tetramethylrosamine were prepared by the directed-metalation/cyclization of the corresponding N,N-diethyl 2-(3-dimethylaminophenylchalcogeno)-4-dimethylaminobenzamide to the 2,7-bis-(N,N-dimethylamino)-9H-chalcogenoxanthen-9-one followed by the addition of phenylmagnesium bromide, dehydration, and ion exchange to the chloride salt. The thio and seleno tetramethylrosamines had longer wavelengths of absorption and higher quantum yields for the generation of singlet oxygen than tetramethylrosamine. Both the thio and selenoanalogues of tetramethylrosamine were efficient photosensitizers against R3230AC rat mammary adenocarcinoma cells in vitro.

Time-resolved photoconductivity of PbSe nanocrystal arrays.

We report the sub-picosecond photoconductivity dynamics of chemically treated PbSe nanocrystal arrays utilizing time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS). TRTS allows both the degree of interdot electronic coupling and the carrier dynamics to be extracted simultaneously. The following capping ligands bonded to the quantum dot surface were studied: hydrazine, ethylenediamine, butlyamine, and aniline. In addition, the arrays were treated with NaOH. We find that the treatments affect both the degree of electronic coupling and the carrier dynamics.

Self-assembly of linear arrays of semiconductor nanoparticles on carbon single-walled nanotubes.

Ligand-stabilized nanocrystals (NCs) were strongly bound to the nanotube surfaces by simple van der Waals forces. Linear arrays of CdSe and InP quantum dots were formed by self-assembly using the grooves in bundles of carbon single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) as a one-dimensional template. A simple geometrical model explains the ordering in terms of the anisotropic properties of the nanotube surface. CdSe quantum rods were also observed to self-organize onto SWNTs with their long axis parallel to the nanotube axis. This approach offers a route to the formation of ordered NC/SWNT architectures that avoids problems associated with surface derivatization.

Bionanofabrication of metallic and semiconductor nanoparticle arrays using S-layer protein lattices with different lateral spacings and geometries.

Two-dimensional (2-D) surface layer (S-layer) protein lattices isolated from the gram-positive bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans and the acidothermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius were investigated and compared for their ability to biotemplate the formation of self-assembled, ordered arrays of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs). The NPs employed for these studies included citrate-capped gold NPs and various species of CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs). The QD nanocrystals were functionalized with different types of thiol ligands (negative- or positive-charged/short- or long-chain length) in order to render them hydrophilic and thus water-soluble. Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform analyses, and pair correlation function calculations revealed that ordered nanostructured arrays with a range of spacings (approximately 7-22 nm) and different geometrical arrangements could be fabricated through the use of the two types of S-layers. These results demonstrate that it is possible to exploit the physicochemical/structural diversity of prokaryotic S-layer scaffolds to vary the morphological patterning of nanoscale metallic and semiconductor NP arrays.

Hybrid epitaxial-colloidal semiconductor nanostructures.

We present a growth technique which combines wet-chemical growth and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to create complex semiconductor nanostructures with nanocrystals as active optical material. The obtained results show that wet-chemically prepared semiconductor nanocrystals can be incorporated in an epitaxally grown crystalline cap layer. As an exemplary system we chose CdSe nanorods and CdSe(ZnS) core-shell nanocrystals in ZnSe and discuss the two limits of thin (d approximately 2R) and thick (d>2R) ZnSe cap layers of thickness d for CdSe nanorods and nanodots of radii R between 2 and 4 nm. In contrast to the strain-induced CdSe/ZnSe Stranski-Krastanow growth of a quantum dot layer in a semiconductor heterostructure, the technique proposed here does not rely on strain and thus results in additional degrees of freedom for choosing composition, concentration, shape, and size of the nanocrystals. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry show that the ZnSe cap layer is of high crystalline quality and provides all parameters for a consecutive growth of Bragg structures, waveguides, or diode structures for electrical injection.

Semiconductor nanocrystals as fluorescent biological labels.

Semiconductor nanocrystals were prepared for use as fluorescent probes in biological staining and diagnostics. Compared with conventional fluorophores, the nanocrystals have a narrow, tunable, symmetric emission spectrum and are photochemically stable. The advantages of the broad, continuous excitation spectrum were demonstrated in a dual-emission, single-excitation labeling experiment on mouse fibroblasts. These nanocrystal probes are thus complementary and in some cases may be superior to existing fluorophores.

A ratiometric CdSe/ZnS nanocrystal pH sensor.

The development of a reversible chemical sensor based on a CdSe/ZnS nanocrystal (NC) is described. Signal transduction is accomplished by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the NC and a fluorescent pH-sensitive squaraine dye attached to the surface of the NC. The efficiency of FRET, and consequently the relative intensity of NC and dye emissions, is modulated with the pH-dependent absorption cross section of the squaraine dye. The design of a NC sensor based on FRET results in a ratiometric sensor since the emission intensities of dye and NC may be referenced to the isosbestic point between NC and dye emissions. The ratiometric approach allows sensing to be performed, regardless of issues surrounding collection efficiency (scattering environment, light fluctuations, etc.) and dye:NC loadings.

Temperature dependence of excitonic radiative decay in CdSe quantum dots: the role of surface hole traps.

Using atomistic, semiempirical pseudopotential calculations, we show that if one assumes the simplest form of a surface state in a CdSe nanocrystal--an unpassivated surface anion site--one can explain theoretically several puzzling aspects regarding the observed temperature dependence of the radiative decay of excitons. In particular, our calculations show that the presence of surface states leads to a mixing of the dark and bright exciton states, resulting in a decrease of 3 orders of magnitude of the dark-exciton radiative lifetime. This result explains the persistence of the zero-phonon emission line at low temperature, for which thermal population of higher-energy bright-exciton states is negligible. Thus, we suggest that surface states are the controlling factor of dark-exciton radiative recombination in currently synthesized colloidal CdSe nanocrystals.

Linearly polarized emission from colloidal semiconductor quantum rods.

Colloidal quantum rods of cadmium selenide (CdSe) exhibit linearly polarized emission. Empirical pseudopotential calculations predict that slightly elongated CdSe nanocrystals have polarized emission along the long axis, unlike spherical dots, which emit plane-polarized light. Single-molecule luminescence spectroscopy measurements on CdSe quantum rods with an aspect ratio between 1 and 30 confirm a sharp transition from nonpolarized to purely linearly polarized emission at an aspect ratio of 2. Linearly polarized luminescent chromophores are highly desirable in a variety of applications.
