[Interrelation of the hormonal indices and the cytologic characteristics of the germ cells].

The analysis of the maturation of follicular oocytes as well as of the state of gametes after induction of ovulation with PMSG or with GnRH in intact and androgenized rats revealed the dependence of the heterogeneity extent (in morphologic and chromosomal damages) of population of germ cells maturing in vivo and in vitro upon the character of gonadotropin regulation disturbances of folliculogenesis. Stable disorder of reproductive function (androgenization) is followed by a significant increase in number of abnormal gametes under its hormonal correction.

[A decrease in blood beta-carotene in dairy cows during late pregnancy period].

In four successive seasons of green and winter feeding in the years 1980-1984, beta-carotene concentrations were determined in the plasma of venous blood of 3441 cows in the first phase of lactation, in the other phase of lactation, in the eighth month of pregnancy and in the 9th-9.5th months of pregnancy. The cows in the other phase of lactation had the significantly highest beta-carotene concentrations in the two feeding seasons. In the eighth month of pregnancy there occurs a significant drop that continues also in the 9th-9.5th months of pregnancy. In the first phase of lactation beta-carotene concentrations remained at the level of the values from the 9th-9.5th months of pregnancy. In the period of winter feeding, the mean concentrations of beta-carotene in all groups of cows were deep below the limit value of 7.44 mumol . l-1, which indicated that it was necessary to fortify feeds with vitamin A; in the cows in the 9th-9.5th months of pregnancy and in the cows in the first phase of lactation they were lower than the critical value of 5.58 mumol.l-1, which signaled the disorders of reproduction processes. In the course of the years of investigation beta-carotene concentrations varied in the same manner in all groups of cows in keeping with the vegetation period of the feed, feed kind and quality.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Anxiety and physical illness.

The subjective experience of anxiety frequently signals a person's unfulfilled attempts to manage recent environmental or internal challenges. The consequences of stress-related anxiety can be found in most of the body systems: cardiovascular disorders, gastrointestinal ailments, problems with the reproductive system, dermatologic disorders, and autoimmune disturbances--all have been shown to be greatly influenced by anxiety. In addition, studies of hostages and prisoners of war indicate that a person's reactions to extreme stress are predictive of his or her future physical and mental health. Thus, extreme stress-related anxiety must be identified and treated early to protect the patient from a lifetime of chronic illness.

Survey of the pathologic findings in a large production colony of pigeons, with special reference to pseudomembranous stomatitis and nephritis.

Pathologic evaluations of pigeons dying between September 1984 and August 1985 are reported for a production colony of 1200-1800 White Carneau and Show Racer pigeons ranging in age from hatchlings to 12 years. Infectious diseases were the common causes of death in pigeons younger than 1 year; salmonellosis and nephritis were the common causes in pigeons 1-3 years old; and neoplasia and reproductive organ disorders were the common causes in pigeons older than 3 years. Monthly mortality was 2-4% in pigeons fed a cholesterol-containing diet and 0.9% in those fed noncholesterol-containing pellet diets. The increased deaths in the cholesterol-fed birds were attributed primarily to end-stage renal disease and atherosclerosis with secondary complications. The most frequently observed clinical entity in pigeons younger than 6 months was pseudomembrane formation on the oral and pharyngeal mucosa, termed pseudomembranous stomatitis. The definitive etiologic factor was not determined. Although all affected pigeons had similar gross lesions, the cases fell into one of three subsets, suggestive of bacterial, fungal, or viral etiologies. Chronic nephritis occurring as end-stage renal disease was more severe in pigeons fed a cholesterol-containing diet.

Clinical applications of prostaglandins in swine.

Potential uses and efficacies of prostaglandins in the control of the swine estrous cycle, the induction of farrowing and abortion, and the treatment of ovarian diseases, anestrus, and low libido are presented. The dosages, relative efficacies, and adverse effects of the commercially available prostaglandin compounds are also discussed.

Retinoids, cancer, and the skin.

Vitamin A and its newly developed synthetic analogues recently have been demonstrated to have profound effects on disorders of keratinization, sebaceous gland function, and cancer. In separate sections of this article, we review the history, chemistry, metabolism, mechanism of action, toxicity, and clinical applications of both the naturally occurring and synthetic retinoids.

Menstrual pattern changes in laparoscopic sterilization patients whose last pregnancy was terminated by therapeutic abortion. A two-year follow-up study.

Women were used as their own controls in the comparison of presterilization and poststerilization menstrual patterns. Five parameters were studied: regularity of cycle length, duration and amount of flow and incidence of dysmenorrhea and intermenstrual bleeding. Three parameters in the electrocoagulation group (regularity of cycle length and duration and amount of flow) and one parameter in the tubal ring group(duration of flow) showed significant changes after sterilization. However, by controlling for the effect of previous contraceptive methods used, no significant menstrual pattern changes following sterilization were discerned in either technique group.

[Amenorrhoea following oral contraception. Pathophysiological problems (author's transl)].

In women with previously normal menstrual cycles the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian function returns to normal within one month after anovulatory steroids are discontinued, and although the follicular phase is prolonged, the ovulation mechanisms are restored within 3 to 4 weeks. Oral contraception by itself does not produce amenorrhoea, but it may mask possible disorders in the gonadotropic axis. Thus, in many cases post-contraceptive amenorrhoea indicates previous dysfunction of the anterior pituitary, which appears to involve lack of oestradiol positive feed-back and, to a greater extent, excessive negative feed-back. Following oestradiol administration, gonadotropic inhibition is abnormally prolonged beyond the 15th day. Cyclic activity is usually restored by clomiphene citrate. Post-contraceptive amenorrhoea is sometimes accompanied by galactorrhoea. Oestrogens facilitate prolactin secretion by producing hypertrophy and hyperplasia of pituitary prolactin-producing cells, but progestogens probably have an inhibitory effect on these cells, so that prolactin plasma levels are normal or slightly raised during treatment with anovulatory steroids. A pituitary microadenoma should be suspected in the presence of high prolactin levels, and oestrogenic treatments should be stopped. In all cases of amenorrhoea, whether or not they occur after oral contraception, the same etiological investigations should be carried out.
