Diversity of eukaryotic microorganisms: computer-based resources, "The Handbook of Protoctista" and its "Glossary".

The kingdom Protoctista comprises some 30 phyla, including the eukaryotic anaerobes that permanently lack mitochondria, the Phylum Archaeprotista, with its three classes: (i) Archamoebae, e.g., Pelomyxa, Mastigina, (ii) Metamonada, e.g., Giardia, Pyrsonympha, and (iii) Parabasalia, e.g., Trichomonas, Calonympha, and the Phylum Microspora (Microsporidia), e.g., Vairimorpha. These and all algae, protozoa, labyrinthulids, "water molds" (oomycota, plasmodiophorans, hyphochytrids, chytrids, etc.) and other eukaryotes excluded from plants, animals and fungi are detailed in the Handbook of Protoctista. The Illustrated Glossary of Protoctista contains descriptions of the morphology and taxonomy of these microorganisms, including the many equivalent and homologous structures with different names. The Glossary has also been made into a Macintosh-compatible CD-ROM disk.

The ICD family of classifications.

The history from the Sixth to the Ninth Revisions of the ICD is described. The 10th revision is presented as the 21st Century classification. The preparation of the ICD-10 included a long process with two expert committee meetings. A classification of diseases can be defined as a system of categories to which morbid entities are assigned according to established criteria. The purpose of the ICD is to permit the systematic analysis, interpretation and comparison of mortality and morbidity data collected in different countries or areas and at different times. In practice, the ICD has become the international standard diagnostic classification for all general epidemiological and many health management purposes. It was felt that the main ICD (the three- and four-character classification), covered by three volumes of ICD-10, could not incorporate all this additional information and remain accessible, and relevant to its traditional users, so the idea arose of a "family" of disease and health-related classifications, including volumes published separately form the main ICD, to be used as required. A statistical classification of diseases must be confined to a limited number of mutually exclusive categories, able to encompass the whole range of morbid condition, and must have well defined place in the list of categories. Consequently, throughout the classification, there will be residual categories for other and miscellaneous conditions that cannot be allocated to the more specific categories. As few conditions as possible should be classified to residual categories. Consequently, throughout the classification, there will be residual categories for other and miscellaneous conditions that cannot be allocated to the more specific categories.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Editing of articles accepted for publication by the Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde].

The Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde has been publishing medical science in Dutch for 140 years. To bridge the gap between the specialist science and the general medical reader several sections in the accepted papers have to be clarified, simplified and shortened by post acceptance editing. The style and language of the authors is treated with respect. Changes are made if the article does not comply with internationally accepted rules on scientific reporting, if the article can not be understood using currently authoritative general and medical books of reference, and if its language does not comply with generally accepted Dutch rules for grammar and spelling.

[An analysis of the information in the Medicom International Vade Mecum with respect to drugs with vitamin A].

OBJECTIVE: Determination of whether rational drug use is facilitated by the quality of the information provided by the Medicom International Vademecum on drugs containing vitamin A as active component. DESIGN: Descriptive study. SETTING: Primary, specialized and hospital health care within the national context. SUBJECTS: Total drugs containing vitamin A, included in the 1995 Medicom International Vademecum. MEASUREMENTS: Systematic analysis of the information contained in the technical note on drugs containing vitamin A included in the Medicom International Vademecum, with respect to several parameters. RESULTS: The Medicom International Vademecum lists a total of 37 drugs containing vitamin A (35 in combination). A total of 112 different indications are given; 74 are not accepted in the literature, and 29 are related to the active components present in combination with vitamin A. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis of the technical information provided by the Medicom International Vademecum on medications containing vitamin A reveals major deficiencies in the parameters investigated.
