Selenium levels in blood of upper Silesian population: evidence of suboptimal selenium status in a significant percentage of the population.

The selenium status and the relationship of whole-blood selenium and plasma homocysteine are reported for healthy human subjects living in Upper Silesia. A total of 1063 individuals (627 male and 436 female) examined for whole-blood selenium were subdivided into six groups according to age; the youngest included adolescents (n=143) aged 10-15 yr, and the oldest were centenarians (n=132). The mean Se content was relatively low (62.5+/-18.4 microg/L), and it tended to be higher in men (65.9+/-17.2 microg/L) than in women (57.5+/-18.9 microg/L). Selenium levels appeared to be age dependent, as the highest values were observed in young and middle-age adults (21-40 yr), whereas they were significantly lower in adolescents and in the elderly. In more than 40% of apparently healthy adults (aged 21-69 yr), the Se concentration was within the range 60-80 microg/L (i.e., below the lower limit of the nutritional adequacy range [80 microg/L]). A significant inverse correlation between whole-blood selenium and plasma total homocysteine was detected in a smaller population sample of middle-aged and elderly persons (n=204).

Distinct population of hair cell progenitors can be isolated from the postnatal mouse cochlea using side population analysis.

In mammals, the permanence of hearing loss is due mostly to the incapacity of the cochlea to replace lost mechano-receptor cells (i.e., hair cells [HCs]). The generation of new HCs from a renewable source of progenitors is a principal requirement for developing a cell therapy within this sensory organ. A subset of stem cells, termed side population (SP), has been identified in several tissues of mammals. The ATP-binding cassette transporter Abcg2/Bcrp1 contributes to the specification of the SP phenotype and is proposed as a universal marker for stem/progenitor cells. A defining character of these SP cells is a high efflux capacity for Hoechst dye. Here, we demonstrate that Abcg2 transporter is expressed with two other stem/progenitor cell markers (i.e., Nestin and Musashi1) in distinct and overlapping domains of the supporting cells within the postnatal cochlea. We have developed and describe a fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) technique that enables the purification of a discrete subpopulation of SP-supporting cells from the early postnatal mouse cochlea based on their ability to exclude Hoechst dye. These FACS-isolated cells can divide and express markers of stem/progenitor cells such as Abcg2, a determinant of the SP phenotype, and Musashi1, a neural stem/progenitor cell marker. These markers can differentiate cells expressing markers of HCs and supporting cells in vitro. Our observation that these SP cells are capable of differentiating into HC-like cells implies a possible use for such cells (i.e., the replacement of lost auditory HCs within damaged cochlea).

Population trends in the prevalence of benzodiazepine use in the older population of Nova Scotia: A cause for concern?

Because benzodiazepines can cause significant morbidity and data of their use in elderly people in Canada are scarce, the patterns of benzodiazepine use by Nova Scotia's seniors were studied with the use of administrative, population-based data. The prevalence of benzodiazepine use in the fiscal years 1993/94 to 1995/96 was explored, the types of benzodiazepines used and the extent of use for periods exceeding 30 days were examined, and an attempt was made to examine the average daily doses used. Benzodiazepine use decreased from 28.74% in 1993/94 to 24.69% in 1995/96 (P<0.001). Long elimination half-life benzodiazepines accounted for 23% of benzodiazepines in 1995/96. The proportion of benzodiazepines filled for periods exceeding 30 days increased from 65% in 1993/94 to 68% in 1995/96 (P<0.001). Variability in the estimated daily doses of the benzodiazepines was such that comparison with recommended dose maxima could not be made with confidence, even though the averages of these estimated daily doses appeared to exceed recommended maxima, except for users of alprazolam, lorazepam, oxazepam or bromazepam. Although benzodiazepine use decreased, the observed patterns of use may place seniors at unnecessary risk for adverse health outcomes and increased health resource utilization.

[Genetic variation of pine in natural Crimean populations and in artificial populations in Krivbass].

The comparative analysis of the genetic variation in the plantations of Pinus pallasiana D. Don in Krivbass and the Crimean populations has been conducted using the electrophoretic division of isoenzymes of 10 geneenzymous systems, encoded by 23 loci. In the artificial plantations of industrial ecotopes of Krivbass the level of genetic variation has been higher than in natural stands of Pinus pallasiana D. Don. within the range of one microslope in the Mountainous Crimea. The Nei' s genetic distance (Dn) between two regions varied within 0.016 to 0.026.

[Chromosomal polymorphism of populations of Anopheles arabiensis (Diptera: Culicidae) from Reunion island and cross-fertility among continental African populations].

Cytological examination of a sample of Anopheles gambiae complex mosquitoes from Reunion island revealed the presence of An. arabiensis only. Chromosomal polymorphisms were observed only for inversion 3Ra, the standard homozygote form being predominant. Cross-mating experiments with laboratory specimens originating from continental Africa produced viable and fertile offspring with no chromosomal asynapsis observed in the F1 female progeny. There was no evidence for speciation of the Reunion island populations. The results are discussed with regard to the behaviour of the vector and its influence on the vectorial capacity of this species, and the history of malaria and malaria control in the South-West islands of the Indian Ocean and on Reunion island in particular.

Work and life stressors and psychological distress in the Canadian working population: a structural equation modelling approach to analysis of the 1994 National Population Health Survey.

Work stressors are increasingly recognized as potentially important determinants of mental health status. We examined such relationships using a structural equation modelling approach with data on adult, working Canadians who participated in the first wave of the National Population Health Survey (NPHS). Work stressors formed a composite construct with paths from psychological demands, decision latitude, work social support and job insecurity, each measured through a reduced version of the Job Content Questionnaire. Life stressors also formed a composite construct composed of chronic stressors and recent life events. Psychological distress was the outcome, mediated by the latent effect constructs of mastery and self-esteem. Work stressors had consistently positive total effects on distress (sum of standardized path coefficients from 0.004 to 0.153 across gender-occupation strata), with all of these effects mediated through reduced self-esteem and mastery (work stressors to these mediators: -0.188 to -0.413). Life stressors had larger positive total effects on distress (0.462 to 0.536), with the majority of these effects direct.

[Genetic differentiation of the Mongolian population. Comparative analysis of the geographic distribution of biochemical markers of genes and restriction fragment length polymorphism of nuclear DNA in the Mongolian population].

The geographical distribution of the gene frequencies from loci: Hp, Tf, Gc, Pi, AcP1, GLO1, EsD, 6-PGD, PGM1 and RFLP's of the nuclear DNA of the loci HBG-2 (HindIII), HBB (AvaII), ApoB (XbaI), D7S8 (PstI), LDLR (HincII) and AT-3 was analysed in the Mongolian population. These data revealed the homogeneity of 18 local groups in Mongolia and extremely low genetic differences measured by GST. There was no differences in the average GST values between protein markers and nuclear DNA markers.

[Population screening on a population level in Leipzig within the scope of the Bavarian cholesterol project].

Cholesterol determinations of 15.391 inhabitants of Leipzig were carried out in November 1990 within the Bavarian Cholesterol-Screening-Project. The aim of this screening on population basis was to identify individuals with elevated blood cholesterol levels as one of the risk factors of atherosclerosis. Capillary blood cholesterol was measured by means of the Reflotron dry-chemistry system (Boehringer, Mannheim). 27% of the inhabitants of Leipzig show cholesterol levels lower than 5.2 mmol/l as recommended by the European Society of Atherosclerosis Research. Furthermore the characteristic age dependence is seen. In comparison with the town Nürnberg lower mean cholesterol values were found in Leipzig.

[Population study of knowledge and practice in the Albanian population regarding water usage and diarrhea prevention].

The worsening of the social-environmental conditions during the period of transition of Albania and an epidemic of cholera (1994) were the cue for the execution of the study. The main objective is the description of knowledge and attitudes of the Albanian mothers about the risk factors for the gastroenteritis. This is a descriptive study of a representative sample (2100 families) of the population who reside in the central area of Albania, in 1996. The sample has been selected by cluster-sampling method. Interviewers trained previously, collected the data with a questionnaire ad hoc. Data elaboration has been carried out with the software Epilnfo 5. 99.7% (2094) of the enlisted mothers, mean age 28.7 years, were interviewed. 2/3 of them reside in rural areas. We considered social-demographic variables and their relation with the generic hygienic norms and those relative to water, foods, animals. The basic knowledge was very insufficient, particularly in rural areas, and in relation with lower social-economic index and instruction. The study reflects the state of transition train of the political and social-sanitary situation of Albania in the last decade. Still the knowledge and the attitudes about the alimentary hygiene are inadequate. It seems opportune to face this emergency with campaigns aimed at health education and public health interventions.

Prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in an urban and rural German population: results of a population-based Study of Health in Pomerania.

OBJECTIVE: Based on a randomized, population study (Study of Health in Pomerania [SHIP]), the objective of the present study was to determine incidence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in adults 20 years or older and to compare the data with TMD prevalence of other exclusively random sample studies that fulfilled criteria similar to those of this study (age > or = 20 years, age range > or = 40 years, sample size > or = 500 subjects, equal gender distribution). METHOD AND MATERIALS: Men and women (n = 7,008) 20 to 79 years of age from mid- and small-sized towns in a rural region in northeast Germany were randomly sampled from resident registry office files. The response rate was 68.8%. Adults between the ages of 20 and 81 years (n = 4,289) were clinically and anamnestically examined. RESULTS: Half of the subjects (49.9%) had one or more clinical signs of TMD, but only 2.7% were subjectively aware of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain symptoms. Women showed higher frequency for all signs and symptoms of TMD than men. However, these differences were not significant for all signs and symptoms in all age groups. The influence of age on TMD signs and symptoms was less pronounced. The prevalence for the following variables found in the present study compared to those of other comparable, random sample studies was: clinical examination; (TMJ) tenderness to palpation (5% versus 2% to 6%); masticatory muscle tenderness (15% versus 19% to 21%); joint sounds (25% versus 15% to 25%); limited maximum mouth opening < 40 mm (9% versus 5% to 8%); pain upon movement of the mandible (1% versus 1% to 3%); irregular jaw movements (deviation, deflection) (28% versus 28%); interview: subjective joint sounds (9% versus 11% to 13%); and subjective TMJ pain (3% versus 4% to 7%). CONCLUSION: The TMD incidence in the current study agreed quite well with the other studies based on random samples with similar subjects and design. The large range of prevalence for signs and symptoms of TMD documented in reviews and meta-analyses could therefore not be confirmed.

Population studies for STR loci (D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D18S51 and FGA) in NWFP and Sindhi populations of Pakistan for forensic use.

CEMB's Forensic DNA typing project is directed towards the introduction of DNA typing technique in Pakistan's criminal justice system so as to exonerate an innocent and wrongly accused person and incriminates the culprit. The present study is a part of the project of CEMB to analyze Sindhi and NWFP (North West Frontier Province) populations for five STR (Short Tandem Repeat) loci out of 13 CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) loci. Allelic frequencies and heterozygosity for STR markers D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D18S51 and FGA (FIBRA) were determined. Samples from unrelated individuals were amplified by multiplex PCR using the unlabelled primers for these markers followed by denaturing Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE). Statistical analysis was performed to determine the allelic frequencies and was evaluated using the Chi Square Test.

Dental service use and its correlates in a dentate population: an analysis of the Saskatchewan population health and dynamics survey, 1999-2000.

OBJECTIVES: To document the frequency of self-reported use of dental services within a 2-year period by a sample of dentate Saskatchewan residents aged 18 years and older; explore the correlates associated with dental service use for men and women separately; and examine the age, gender and income distribution of dental insurance coverage. METHODS: The 1999-2000 Saskatchewan Population Health and Dynamics Survey provided a representative sample of 5,003 dentate respondents (mean age 45.5 years; 52.3% women), 18 years and older, randomly selected and interviewed by telephone. RESULTS: Of those interviewed, 77% of the women and 67% of the men reported a dental visit within the previous 2 years. For women, logistic regression analysis indicated that when all other factors were held constant, the odds of dental service use within the last 2 years were higher among those who were aged 18-19 years, had post-secondary education or technical certification, were in the highest household income adequacy category, held dental insurance and engaged in such preventive behaviours as regular general checkups, eye checkups, skin self-examination and not smoking daily. For men, the odds of dental service use within the last 2 years were greater if they had education at or beyond the secondary level, were students, were in the upper or highest income adequacy levels, held dental insurance and engaged in preventive health behaviours such as general checkups, eye checkups and not smoking daily. Dental insurance coverage was strongly associated with household income adequacy and peaked among men and women aged 30-49 years. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that the roles of gender, income, education, age, health-related behaviours and resources such as dental insurance should be considered in future public oral health strategies. We propose a conceptual model to aid in understanding the social structural and individual pathways to oral health.

[Comparative analysis of a population hospitalized for alcohol "dependence" and "abuse" with other similar alcoholic populations: a study of 1,300 patients].

The authors refer on introduction to a former research where they describe results from 150 inpatients diagnosed of "Alcohol Dependence" and "Alcohol Abuse Syndromes" admitted during 1980-1984 at the Psychiatry Department of University Hospital of Valladolid. A comparison of epidemiologic, clinic, diagnostic and care patients patterns is made versus three other studies , where similar groups of alcoholic patients are studied through 47 variables. The first investigation reports findings from 613 alcoholic out patients demanding psychiatric care at University Hospital in Valladolid. The second one study 134 alcoholic patients (70% outpatients and 30% inpatients) at the Hospital General in Burgos. The last one reports finding from 403 alcoholic inpatients at the Psychiatric Service of "Ramón y Cajal" Hospital of Madrid. A group of 130 patients are studied as a whole, 1,127 males (86.89%) and 173 females (13.3%). Fifty per cent of the sample (n = 653) were inpatients and the remainder were outpatients; 28.30% (n = 368) were diagnosed by means of CIE-8a; 61.38% (n = 798) by means of CIE-9a; and 10.30 by DSM-III diagnostic criteria. The variables evaluated were population, age, sex, civil state, place of birth, place of living, level of education, profession, work capability, economical status and current social class, working and marriage adaptation, place composition, first work age, emigration, family psychiatric problems, affective deprivation, personal background, former treatment for drinking problems, start of drinking average age, abuse average time, kind of drinking, drinking day average amount, motive of abuse increments, consultation motive, somatic and psychiatric diagnoses, others drugs consultations, TAC and EEG results, first pharmacologic treatment, inpatient average time, and later hospitalizations. A table, a graphic and 83 bibliographic quotations, part of which belong to a former work, are included.

[Study of an homogeneous population of obese people and of its regression of weight under hypocaloric diet in hospital. I.--Characteristics of the population (author's transl)].

The study of a population of 79 obese people (62 women and 17 men) allowed to find out, and to specify a certain number of data shown through questionning, clinical examination and biological observations: the predominance of female application for weight regression treatments; the much more important number of major overweight with men; the idea of a "certain" age after which the micrease in weight is less important; the relation between the weigth after birth and overweight; the relation between how long you been futting on weight and the importance of your overweight; the frequency of overweight among your relatives. As for as spontaneous nutrition is concerned the frequency of normal food intake or even of hypocaloric intake, the immoderate proportion of fat intake and the frequency of the few, daily meals. As far as the biological aspect is concerned, the frequency of chemical diabetes and the possibility to distinguish from the oral glucose tolerance test together with the proportion of insulinemy, four groups of subjects ranging from the state of normal sugar regulation to proved diabetes, the frequency of hyperlipemy and hypercholesterolemy; the little difference between the free fat acids in the plasma, or an empty stomach as well as during the oral glucose tolerance test, with regard to normal subjects, with nevertheless, an important relation between the importance of the overweight and the average of fat acids.
