Membrane formation after implantation of polyvinyl alcohol-coated intraocular lenses.

Two PVA-coated intraocular lenses were implanted. In the first case there was an acute onset of severe intraocular inflammation and dense membrane formation on the surface of the implant. The inflammation developed on the fifty-third postoperative day in a previously quiet eye. The second case demonstrated a relentless increase in intraocular inflammation that was unresponsive to medical therapy. An acute exacerbation with membrane formation occurred between the fortieth and forty-fifth postoperative days. In both cases the fibrinous membranes and the implants were removed with prompt resolution of symptoms.

[Comparative study of the degree of patient satisfaction in intermittent catheterization with Lofric and polyvinyl chloride catheters].

PURPOSE: To assess the grade of satisfaction in children on intermittent catheterization with the use of LoFric and PVC conventional catheters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 40 p with experience in CIC were included in this study. An anonymous questionnaire was sent to all patients after 2-months using the LoFric catheter. Patients were divided in 3 groups (bladder augmentation, artificial sphincter, Mitrofanoff) because of major differences in CIC discomfort between these groups. RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 87.5% of the patients (35 p). In 86% (30 p) LoFric catheter training was easy or very easy but in 14% (5 p) it was difficult. Four patients had some difficulty during conventional catheter insertion, in 3 (75%) the difficulty disappeared with the use of LoFric catheter. Of the 51% (18 p) who reported some discomfort during the insertion of conventional catheter, 72% said it was eliminated when the LoFric catheter was used. Of 6 p with some discomfort when removing the conventional catheter, 5 (83%) said it disappeared with the new catheter. Th LoFric catheter was favored by 70% of patients because it reduced the discomfort caused by conventional catheters, bladder insertion was easier and smoother, and gel lubrication was not needed. The 17% of patients reported some difficulty dealing with this slippery catheter. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the LoFric catheter could be justified in patients who report with conventional catheters have some discomfort. It can also be recommended in patients with artificial sphincter, bladder augmentation and Mitrofanoff procedure, in whom any complication related to CIC would have serious consequences.

Effects of polyvinyl alcohol administered in the diet to rats on fertility, early embryonic development, growth and development.

PVA was administered in the diet to male and female Sprague-Dawley rats (26/sex/group) at doses of 0, 2000, 3500 and 5000 mg/kg/day for two generations. The study design assessed gonadal function, estrous cycle, mating behavior, conception, gestation, parturition, lactation, weaning, and growth and development of F(1) and F(2) offspring. Parental rats were treated for 70 days prior to mating, throughout mating, gestation and lactation until sacrifice. Clinical observations, body weights and feed consumption were recorded routinely. Dietary concentrations were adjusted for each sex on a weekly basis except during gestation and lactation, to provide the intended mg/kg/day PVA levels. Pups were weighed routinely and weaned at 21 days of age prior to selection for the next generation. Unformed stool was noted predominately at the 3500 and 5000 mg/kg/day levels in P(0) and F(1) parental animals. This finding was attributed to the high levels of PVA being fed and subsequently excreted in the stool. Slight decreases in the mean body weights of P(0) males were noted at 2000 and 5000 mg/kg/day. Feed consumption was elevated at the 3500 and 5000 mg/kg/day doses in both generations but not during either lactation period. These increases generally were observed in a dose-related manner (g/kg/day), as a result of the large amount of PVA being consumed to maintain the caloric intake necessary for normal growth. There were no effects of PVA on P(0), F(1) male or female reproductive performance or pup survival, growth, organ weights, and macroscopic or microscopic observations at doses of 2000, 3500 and 5000 mg/kg/day. Therefore the no-observed-effect level (NOAEL) is 5000 mg/kg/day for both parental and offspring in this reproductive study.

Axial strain imaging of intravascular data: results on polyvinyl alcohol cryogel phantoms and carotid artery.

Mapping the local elastic properties of an atherosclerotic artery is of major interest for predicting the disease evolution or an intervention outcome. These properties can be investigated by elastography, which estimates the strain distribution within a medium in response to a stress. But because diseased arteries are highly heterogeneous, a small global deformation may result in high local strains in the softest regions. For those reasons, we use in this paper the strain estimation method we recently developed to compute elastograms of original vessel-mimicking cryogel phantoms and a fresh excised human carotid artery. This adaptive method has been effectively proved to be accurate in a wider range of strains (0-7%) than commonly used gradient-based methods, and very adapted for investigating highly heterogeneous tissues. Resulting elastograms cover a wider range of strains (0-3.5%) than all previously reported intravascular elastograms, improving the discrimination between healthy and diseased regions.

New polyvinyl chloride membrane electrode without inner reference solution for the determination of methadone.

A PVC membrane electrode, without inner reference solution, based on an ion association extraction system responding to methadone (MD) is described. It incorporates a methadone-tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate ion-pair complex in 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether. The prepared electrode exhibits a near Nernstian response (59.5 mV per decade) over the concentration range 2.5 x 10(-5)-10(-1) M MD in solutions of pH 2.0-9.0. The reproducibility of the electrode potentials was +/-1 mV by day during at least 6 months. Response time was about 5 s for MD concentrations between 10(-5) and 10(-1) M. Determinations of MD in pharmaceutical preparations (tablets and syrups) by direct potentiometry gave an average recovery of 99.3% (w/w) and a mean S.D. of 1.5% (w/w).

Formation of PCDDs, PCDFs, and coplanar PCBs from polyvinyl chloride during combustion in an incinerator.

Exhaust gases from the combustion of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and theirvarious mixtureswere analyzed for PCDDs, PCDFs, and coplanar PCBs by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in order to investigate the role of PVC in these chlorinated compounds. Total amounts of dioxins (PCDDs + PCDFs) found in the samples were 11.7 ng/g PE alone, 1.17 ng/g from PS alone, 25.3 ng/g from PET alone, 448 ng/g from PE with PVC, 140 ng/g from PS with PVC, 126 ng/g from PET with PVC, 824 ng/g from PVC alone under low-CO level, and 8,920 ng/g from PVC alone under high-CO level. CO level in high-CO level condition was 880 ppm which was 20 times greater than that in low-CO level condition. Formation of coplanar PCBs ranged from 0.095 ng/g (PE alone) to 77 ng/g (PVC alone under high-CO level). There is a clear correlation between dioxin formation and chloride content. PCDFs composed 80% (PET + PVC)--98% (PET alone) of the total dioxins formed in the exhaust gases. The results indicate that PVC contributes significantly to the formation of PCDDs, PCDFs, and coplanar PCBs from mixtures of plastics upon combustion.

Reconstitution of cytochrome c oxidase in phospholipid vesicles containing polyvinylic polymers.

Cytochrome c oxidase was reconstituted in phospholipid vesicles in the presence of highly hydrophobic poly(vinyl alkanoate) polymers. Electron-microscopy observations demonstrated that polymer interaction with the lipid phase induces vesicles to adopt smaller diameters than those typical of standard proteoliposomes. Functional characterization of these polymer-proteoliposome structures indicates that the reconstitution of the enzyme proceeds efficiently without causing either scrambling of the protein orientation in the membrane or loss of respiratory control. A clear dependence of respiratory control ratio on vesicle size was also demonstrated, which is in agreement with a previous model proposed for control of activity of cytochrome c oxidase vesicles [Brunori, Sarti, Colosimo, Antonini, Malatesta, Jones & Wilson (1985) EMBO J. 4, 2365-2368].

Treatment of periprosthetic soft tissue infection of the groin following vascular surgical procedures by means of a polyvinyl alcohol-vacuum sponge system.

Deep groin infections after prosthetic vascular surgical procedures represent a serious complication of surgical practice. Septicemia and/or erosive hemorrhage can both be consequences. In this situation, removal of the graft appears to be the only option. However, if the infection is detected early (type Szilagyi III), local treatment to eradicate the infection could serve as an alternative. Twenty-four patients with confirmed infection of the soft tissue adjacent to the prosthetic material in the groin were treated locally by implantation of a vacuum sponge system. Duration of this treatment was 2 weeks. All patients showed excellent tissue granulation of the wound area and the microbial stains were negative at the end of therapy. In 21 patients the wound could be primarily closed after explantation of the sponge. Three patients underwent open treatment because of a skin defect. After 12 months, the wounds had healed well in all patients. Histologic evaluation revealed a physiological healing process. Deep soft tissue infections of the groin adjacent to prosthetic vascular material (type Szilagyi III) can be treated effectively and safely with the vacuum sponge system. The treatment is inexpensive, easy to perform, and the initial vascular reconstruction can be preserved.
