Enhanced signal coupling into periodically poled lithium niobate with microlens arrays.

The return signal frequency of an eye-safe ladar system is upconverted from the infrared to the visible through sum-frequency generation by incorporation of periodically poled LiNbO3 into the receiver. A quantitative analysis of the angular acceptance and the quantum efficiency is then presented for a single macroscopic receiver optic and a multiaperture microlens array. Comparing both results, a 6x increase in the receiver field of regard and an 18% increase in beam coupling were realized for the microlens design over the macroscopic system.

Nd:YAG-pumped periodically poled LiNbO3 optical parametric generator seeded with the narrowband output of a 532-nm pumped optical parametric generator.

We present a simple scheme to generate a continuously tunable pulsed narrow-bandwidth infrared wave. An Nd:YAG-pumped periodically poled lithium niobate optical parametric generator (OPG) is seeded with the output of another OPG pumped by the second harmonic (0.532 microm) of the Nd:YAG laser. A tunable idler wave from the 0.532-microm pumped OPG, operated away from the degenerate point, provides a narrow linewidth seed source for the 1.064-microm pumped broadband OPG. Seeding forces the second OPG to operate in a narrowband operation comparable with that of the seed source. Linewidth of the YAG-pumped OPG is 5-25 nm, in the tuning range of 1.61-1.83 microm (signal), narrowed to 1.48-1.05 nm. Methods of further reduction of linewidth also have been discussed.

Improvement of the interferometric method for measuring electro-optic coefficients of poled polymer thin films.

The interferometric method for measuring the linear electro-optic coefficients of polymer films has been improved. This improved method is based on using the antipiezoelectric effect of a quartz crystal to compensate for the change in the optical path length that is due to the electro-optic effect of a polymer film. The electro-optic coefficients of six kinds of new poled polymer film have been determined at a wavelength of 633 nm by this new method. This technique offers a simple, rapid, and highly sensitive method for measuring the electro-optic coefficients of polymer films.

Duty cycle dependence of a periodically poled LiNbO3-based electro-optic Solc filter.

We demonstrate that the performance of a periodically poled LiNbO3- (PPLN-) based electro-optic Solc filter is dependent on the duty cycle of the crystal. This may limit the performance of the device for applications such as add-drop filtering and switching, owing to the deterioration of the extinction ratio. It is shown that by adding a retarder to the Solc filter it is possible to improve the extinction ratio; thus the dependence of the filter on the duty cycle can be reduced. Using Jones calculus, we analyzed the effect of a variable retarder that can also be rotated on the extinction ratio. We experimentally observed a 6 dB increase in the extinction ratio when we used a half-wavelength retarder.

Diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 green laser with a periodically poled KTP and Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber.

A diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 green laser with a periodically poled KTP and Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber is realized. The dependences of pulse repetition rate, pulse energy, pulse width, and peak power on incident pump power are measured for the generated green-light pulses. A rate-equation model is introduced to theoretically analyze the results obtained in the experiment, in which the spatial distribution of the intracavity photon density is taken into account. The numerical solutions of the rate equations agree with the experimental results.

Picosecond-pulse wavelength conversion based on cascaded second-harmonic generation-difference frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide.

The wavelength conversion of picosecond optical pulses based on the cascaded second-harmonic generation-difference-frequency generation process in a MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide is studied both experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the picosecond pulses are generated from a 40 GHz mode-locked fiber laser and two tunable filters, with which the lasing wavelength can be tuned from 1530 to 1570 nm, and the pulse width can be tuned from 2 to 7 ps. New-frequency pulses, i.e., converted pulses, are generated when the picosecond pulse train and a cw wave interact in the waveguide. The conversion characteristics are systematically investigated when the pulsed and cw waves are alternatively taken as the pump at the quasi-phase-matching wavelength of the device. In particular, the conversion dependences on input pulse width, average power, and pump wavelength are examined quantitatively. Based on the temporal and spectral characteristics of wavelength conversion, a comprehensive analysis on conversion efficiency is presented. The simulation results are in good agreement with the measured data.

Compact, continuous-wave, singly resonant optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled RbTiOAsO4 in a Nd:YVO4 laser.

We describe a compact all-solid-state continuous-wave, singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (SRO) based on periodically poled RbTiOAsO4. The SRO is pumped at 1.064 microm by a Nd:YVO4 laser, which is itself pumped by a 3-W diode laser. Using the intracavity technique produced an oscillation threshold for the SRO of only 1.6 W (diode-laser power). For 3 W of diode pump power some 65 mW was obtained in the (nonresonant) idler (wavelength 3.52 microm). Temperature tuning over the range 10-100 degrees C resulted in tuning ranges of 1.52-1.54 and 3.41-3.54 microm for the signal and the idler waves, respectively. Importantly, relaxation oscillations were absent.

Quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation in ultraviolet-assisted periodically poled planar fused silica.

First-order quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation of 1064 to 532 nm in a thermally poled planar fused-silica plate with periodic UV erasure of the second-order nonlinearity was successfully implemented. We obtained a 1:2.9 ratio of d31:d33 for UV-grade fused silica in support of the proposed mechanism for electric-field-induced second-order nonlinearity in this material.

Generation of 360-nm ultraviolet light in first-order periodically poled bulk MgO:LiNbO3.

Ultraviolet second-harmonic generation in first-order periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 is presented. Using a high-voltage multipulse application method, we fabricated a first-order nonlinear grating with a period of 1.8 microm and depth of approximately 150 microm over 10-mm interaction length in a 1-mm-thick MgO:LiNbO3 substrate. In a single-pass configuration, continuous-wave 30-mW UV light at 362.5 nm was generated for a fundamental power of 522 mW, corresponding to a normalized conversion efficiency of 11%/W.

Group-velocity-matched cascaded quadratic nonlinearities of femtosecond pulses in periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3.

Large nonlinear phase shifts were generated with femtosecond pulses at 1560 nm through cascaded quadratic interactions in periodically poled MgO-doped LiNbO3. The off-diagonal component of the nonlinear coefficient was utilized for simultaneous quasi phase matching and group-velocity matching. The effective nonlinear refractive index was varied from -2.9 x 10(-14) to +3.3 x 10(-14) cm2/W by tuning the phase-mismatch conditions.

Actively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser using an electro-optic periodically poled lithium niobate crystal as a laser Q-switch.

We demonstrate a low-voltage and fast laser Q-switching by using an electro-optic periodically poled lithium niobate (EO PPLN) crystal. The half-wave voltage measured from the EO PPLN crystal was 0.36 V x d (microm)/L (cm), where d is the electrode separation and L is the electrode length. When a 13-mm-long EO PPLN was used as a laser Q switch at 7-kHz switching rate, we measured an approximately 12-ns pulse width and approximately 0.74-kW laser pulses at 1064-nm wavelength from a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser with continuous 1.2-W pump power at 809-nm wavelength.

Highly efficient blue-light generation from a compact, diode-pumped femtosecond laser by use of a periodically poled KTP waveguide crystal.

We present a simplified, potentially portable, and highly efficient blue-light source from a periodically poled KTP waveguide crystal with a compact femtosecond Cr:LiSAF laser. This light source generates 5.6 mW of blue average output power at 424 nm with 27 mW of incident fundamental in a single-pass extracavity arrangement at room temperature. The overall system efficiency of electrical power to blue light is 0.5%, and the internal second-harmonic generation conversion efficiency is as high as 37%. The slope efficiency of 5.5% pJ(-1) at low pulse energies is, to our knowledge, the highest slope efficiency yet reported for frequency conversion into the blue spectral region.

Electro-optic Solc-type wavelength filter in periodically poled lithium niobate.

We demonstrate an electro-optic Solc-type wavelength filter in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). A Solc-type transmission spectrum is observed experimentally in PPLN with four periods from 20.2 to 20.8 microm. Modulation of the transmission power of the filter is realized by application of electric fields along the Y axis of the PPLN. It is observed that the wavelength can also be tuned by temperature.

Second-harmonic generation in periodically poled nonlinear polymer waveguides.

We demonstrate quasi-phase-matched (QPM) second-harmonic generation (SHG) at the optical communication wavelengths with side-chain polymer waveguides. A ridge waveguide structure is designed to support fundamental mode guiding at both the pump and the second harmonics, leading to a high field overlap integral of the guided modes. The nonlinearity contrast in the +/0 type QPM waveguide is maximized under a QPM poling electrode width of nearly half the coherence length. Using these configurations, we record a normalized SHG efficiency of 2.2% W(-1) cm(-2) in the polymer waveguide.

Photoinduction of surface-relief gratings during all-optical poling of polymer films.

Using the all-optical poling method, we observed the formation of a surface-relief grating (SRG) in an amorphous polymer film containing azo dye molecules in side chain positions. The experiment consists of a seeding-type process. We used a recently described experimental setup that permits a periodic nonlinear pattern to be produced by the index dispersion of glass. The particular configuration permits photoinduced translation diffusion of the azo chromophores to be observed as the origin of the SRG formation. Analyses of the gratings recorded by use of s (TE) and p (TM) polarization of the writing beams are conducted by atomic-force microscopy. The effect is attributed to mass transport from regions of high isomerization activity to regions of lower activity.

Frequency shifting with local nonlinearity management in nonuniformly poled quadratic nonlinear materials.

We show theoretically that the frequency shifts that result from phase-mismatched cascaded processes under conditions of strong group-velocity mismatch can be significantly enhanced by local control of the nonlinearity with propagation. This control is possible with continuous variation of the poling period of quasi-phase-matched structures and can allow one to avoid saturation of the frequency shift. We theoretically demonstrate its applicability to high-quality, efficient frequency shifting of infrared pulses.
