Physical and chemical aspects of long-term biodeterioration of some polymers and composites.

A biodeterioration study was performed on synthetic polymeric materials including homogenous film made from poly(tetrafluorine ethylene), copolymer film made from tetrafluorine ethylene and perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, vulcanized rubber containing natural caoutchouc, and vulcanized rubber, the main component of which was synthetic butadiene nitrile caoutchouc. The materials were exposed for 12 years to the open air, in mycological containers, and in a cellar in maritime climate conditions: air humidity 72%-90% and seasonal average temperature of 17 degrees C in summer and -2.5 degrees C in winter. The studies of optical and electron microscopy revealed that microorganisms were able to develop not only on the surface of the materials but also to penetrate inside into deeper layers. The fungi that produced the most intensive deterioration in the fluorine polymers and vulcanized rubbers belonged to the Alternaria, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Oidiodendron and Trichoderma genera. The fungi Aspergillus fumigatus, A. niger, Aureobasidium pullulans, and Trichoderma viride produced the most intensive deterioration in the fluorine films, whereas Alternaria tenuissima, Cladosporium herbarum, C. sphaerospermum, and fungi of the Oidiodendron genus were widespread on vulcanized rubbers. Fungi of the Aspergillus and Penicillium genera prevailed on both fluorine films and rubbers exposed in a cellar. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that the structures of poly(tetrafluorine ethylene) and the copolymer of tetrafluorine ethylene and perfluoromethyl vinyl ether did not change after the 12-year exposure; only insignificant changes in surface morphology were observed by optical microscopy. Vulcanized rubber made both from natural and from synthetic caoutchouc exposed for the same length of time showed rather evident changes in appearance and structure. X-ray graphical analysis revealed that new crystallization of the caoutchouc and a possible change in chemical composition of the fillers had occurred.

Impact of crude oil on bacteriocenosis of the digestive tract of mollusks.

In this study the effect of crude oil on intestinal bacterial populations of the mollusk Viviparus contactus was investigated. The addition of crude oil into an environment of mollusks induced no clear changes in the saprophytic, amylolytic, and total coliform bacterial counts in the digestive tract of the mollusk. After 10 days of contamination, the saprophytic, amylolytic, and total coliform bacterial numbers were of the same order of magnitude as the initial numbers. Significant numbers of indigenous hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were observed in the intestinal tracts of mollusks before contamination with crude oil. Introduction of crude oil into the mollusk environment resulted in an increase of 2 orders of magnitude in the number of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria in the digestive tract. Therefore, measuring the hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial populations in the digestive tracts of hydrobionts can be considered an important component of contaminated-site assessment studies.

Analysis of micronuclei in blue mussels and fish from the Baltic and North Seas.

Micronuclei (MN) were analyzed in erythrocytes of flounder (Platichthys flesus) and wrasse (Symphodus melops) and in gill cells of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis). The organisms were collected from three study stations in the Baltic Sea and from seven stations in the North Sea (Karmsund area, Norway) 4 times. The statistically significant differences obtained were related to the season, sex of the fish, and sampling locality. Higher MN frequencies were found in fish and mussels collected from the most polluted study stations in the North Sea. The same tendency could be described in the Baltic Sea; however, it was masked by the recent oil spill from the Butinge oil terminal. Our results showing higher MN frequencies in presumably what were the most polluted study locations suggest that MN tests in fish and mussels may be used for the detection of genotoxic effects in a marine environment. The endpoint is well characterized and can be easily recognized, and the technique is convenient to use in field samplings following standard procedures and protocols.

Toxicity of pesticides to predatory mites and insects in apple-tree site under field conditions.

Various applications of active ingredients of six fungicides and three insecticides and acaricides at normally recommended dosages were tested on two predatory mite species (Amblyseius andersoni Chant and Anthoseius bakeri Garman) from the family Phytoseiidae and on two predatory insect species (Coccinella septempunctata L. Chrysopa perla L.) dominantly present on apple trees. Small differences were found between fungicide treatments. On the trees treated with six fungicide applications the predatory mites and insects survived and increased to a high level, often 20-40 phytoseiids per 100 leaves and 4-8 predatory insects per sample unit. Only the active ingredients tolylfluanid and myclobutanil resulted in lower densities of predatory mites (10-20 phytoseiids per 100 leaves). One application of insecticides-acaricides (active ingredients: clofentezine, phosalone) showed no toxic effect on predatory mites and insects. Two applications of phosalone and one of alpha-cypermethrine were slightly or moderately toxic. Two applications of alpha-cypermethrine and eight routine sprays of various insecticides-acaricides and fungicides were very toxic and resulted in the lowest maximum number of predatory mites and insects, approximately 0-10 phytoseiids per 100 leaves and 1-4 predatory insects per sample unit. The toxicity of pesticides to predatory mites and insects is based on the toxicity of the pesticide' active ingredient and the spray frequency. The active ingredients of fungicides and only one or two applications of insecticides and acaricides were not or slightly toxic and could be used in integrated pest management.

The medicinal leech as a convenient tool for water toxicity assessment.

Medicinal leeches previously were used in various toxicological and pharmacological studies because they are sensitive and easy to keep under laboratory conditions. Toxicological studies using leeches became restricted when their natural sources decreased dramatically. We breed medicinal leeches under laboratory conditions and have the possibility of using them for various investigations. The aim of the current study was to investigate changes in behavioral and physiological responses of leeches exposed to a heavy metal model mixture (HMMM). The composition of the HMMM was determined on the basis of the average annual amounts of representative metals (Zn, Mn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb) in wastewater discharging from the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. An annual average was considered a concentration of 1%. Animals were exposed to 0.13%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% concentrations of the HMMM. The avoidance responses, changes in body weight, feeding behavior, and excretion rates of the leeches were recorded. Avoidance response was observed in animals treated with 1% and 2% concentrations of the HMMM during the first 2 h of exposure. A decrease in body weight was recorded after a 4-week exposure to all tested concentrations. Disturbances in feeding behavior were observed after a 4-week exposure to 0.13%-2% concentrations. An increase in the defecation rate was observed during the 5-week exposure to 0.25%-2% concentrations. The excretion rate via nephridia was decreased during postfeeding period after exposure to 0.25%-2% concentrations. The avoidance response of medicinal leeches can be used as an express method for water quality assessment, whereas physiological responses may be used for the assessment of chronic toxicity of polluted environments.

Toxicity to Tradescantia of technogenic radionuclides and their mixture with heavy metals.

The genotoxic effects on Tradescantia of (137)Cs, (90)Sr, and (236, 242)Pu, a heavy metal mixture [Cd, Cr(VI), Cu, Mn(II), Ni, Pb, Zn] and of a complex mixture of these toxicants were determined. The impact of radionuclides on plants subjected to ionizing radiation exposure was estimated. The number of somatic mutations and the quantity of nonviable stamen hairs were used as end points in the testing. An increase in the quantity of nonviable stamen hairs was observed with increasing internal exposure to (137)Cs, (90)Sr, and (236, 242)Pu; however, the number of somatic mutations was not observed to be dependent on ionizing radiation. The internal dose of individual radionuclides necessary to decrease the quantity of viable stamen hairs in Tradescantia by 50% can be arranged in the following sequence: (236, 242)Pu > (137)Cs > (90)Sr. Tradescantia died in the mixture of the radionuclides (90)Sr, (137)Cs, and (236)Pu (5 x 10(-2), 7 x 10(-5), and 4 x 10(-10) Gy, respectively) after 14 days, whereas the heavy metal mixture caused somatic mutations in 3% of the Tradescantia and nonviable stamen hairs in 7% but no mortality. However, the Tradescantia died in a combined mixture of these heavy metals and the radionuclides after 14 days. On the basis of all these observations, it can be concluded that the toxic effect of radionuclides was more significant than that of heavy metals.

Immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a combined DTPw-hepatitis B vaccine in Lithuanian infants.

UNLABELLED: A total of 120 healthy Lithuanian infants were enrolled in a double-blind, randomized trial to receive one of two lots of SmithKline Beecham Biologicals' combined diphtheria, tetanus, whole cell Bordatella pertussis hepatitis B (DTPw-HB) candidate vaccine administered according to a 0, 1.5, 3-month, primary immunization schedule (beginning at approximately 3-4 months of age). The immunogenicity (based on the antibody responses elicited by each of the four vaccine components) and the reactogenicity (based on documented solicited and unsolicited symptoms) of this candidate vaccine were evaluated. Of the 120 subjects enrolled, 100 were included in the analysis of immunogenicity. One month after the third vaccine dose, all infants had protective levels of antibodies against HBsAg and tetanus toxoid and all, except one infant, had protective levels of antibodies against the diphtheria toxoid (98.9%). At this time all subjects had responded to the B. pertussis component with antibody titres greater than or equal to the assay cut-off. Data collected for all enrolled infants were included in the analysis of reactogenicity. Most local symptoms were mild and occurred within the first 48 h following vaccination. Redness was the most frequently reported local symptom and irritability was the most frequently reported general symptom. One vaccine-related serious adverse event was reported (fever, diarrhea, vomiting and irritability). This event resolved within 20 h without any complications. CONCLUSION: The combined DTPw-HB vaccine was safe, well-tolerated and immunogenic for all four antigens when administered to a population of healthy infants beginning at 3-4 months of age.

Infections and risk of Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus in Lithuanian children.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The role of infections in the aetiology of Type I diabetes is controversial. Certain enteroviral infections might be involved in triggering the beta-cell destruction but insufficient exposure to early infections might increase the risk. We studied how the number of infections experienced during several periods from birth to onset influence diabetes risk. METHODS: The study group came from the five largest Lithuanian cities: 124 patients, selected from the 0-14 years-of-age childhood diabetes register and 372 population-based control subjects matched with them for age group and sex. Information about infections and duration of breastfeeding was collected from health care booklets, other data from a mailed questionnaire, returned by 94.4% of patients and 72.6 % of control subjects. RESULTS: One or more infections experienced during the first half year of life tended to reduce diabetes risk. Crude odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) in the 0-14, 0-4 and 5-14 years-of-age groups were 0.66 (0.42-1.04), 1.06 (0.48-2.36) and 0.52 (0.30-0.90) respectively. Adjustment for the duration of breastfeeding, number of people in the household, duration of mother's education and birth order of the index child made little difference. Odds ratios (95 % confidence intervals) in the 0-14, 0-4 and 5-14 years-of-age groups were 0.60 (0.37-0.98), 0.94 (0.40-2.20) and 0.47 (0.26-0.87), respectively. The number of infections recorded during the last pre-onset year or from birth to onset did not influence diabetes risk. CONCLUSION/INTERPRETATION: Exposure to infections early in life could decrease diabetes risk, particularly for children diagnosed after the age of 4 years.

[Epidemiology of whiplash injuries: an international dilemma].

In countries with a very low or non-existent prevalence of late whiplash syndrome, accident victims do not routinely hear reports of acute whiplash injury leading to chronic symptoms or disability. They do not witness such behaviour in others, and do not thereby have any expectation of such possibilities. They do not engage in a process that encourages hypervigilance for and attention to symptoms, thus eliminating many factors that promote symptom amplification. They also do not engage in a process that engineers anxiety, frustration, and resentment (that is, battling with insurance companies and proving that your pain is real). They do not change their activity in response to what they, after all, view as a minor injury. They will not amplify pre-accident symptoms, or symptoms or amplify daily life's aches and pains. They will not attribute all these different sources of symptoms to chronic damage they believe the accident caused. There is no cultural information to encourage this chronic pain behaviour being seen in other cultures.

Comparative karyological analysis of three species of Bothriocephalus Rudolphi 1808 (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea).

The diploid complements of mitotic metaphase plates of three species of Botriocephaluswere studied using conventional Giemsa staining and karyometric analysis. Botriocephalus claviceps and Botriocephalus gregarius showed a karyotype with 2n=14 chromosomes. All chromosomes of B. claviceps were biarmed, metacentric or meta-submetacentric. The two first pairs of homologues were markedly larger than the remaining elements and represented 48.62% of the total chromosome length. The karyotype of B. gregarius had similar metric values for the chromosomes, but clearly differed in the chromosome morphology of pairs 5, 6 and 7, which had terminally located centromeres. The diploid number 2n=12 was found in Botriocephalus scorpii. The karyotype consists of five pairs of metacentric and one pair of submeta-metacentric chromosomes. The possible pathways of karyotype evolution within Bothriocephalus spp. and their phylogenetic relations with the other karyologically studied groups in the order Pseudophyllidea are discussed.

On the connection between hard cosmic ray flux variations and changes in cardiovascular disease in Vilnius city.

A predictive correlation between hard cosmic ray flux (HCRF) near the Earth's surface and sudden increases in the number of cases of cardiovascular disease (CVD) was studied in Vilnius city. Gamma spectrometers were used to measure HCRF. Changes in the total number of impulses registered by these devices were taken as the physical parameter for prediction of an increase in the number of CVD cases. For quantitative assessment of CVD dynamics two empirical criteria for HCRF were proposed: (1) a consistent fall in the HCRF by 200 or more impulses for 4 or more hours per day; (2) the difference (no less than 15 impulses per hour) between the average number of impulses registered in 2 (subsequent and previous) days. The periods analyzed were those when the number of CVD cases exceeded the average monthly level by 10% and 15%. HCRF fluctuations were used as an indirect indicator of variations in the geomagnetic field, and a leap in CVD cases was predicted 1-3 days following a change in the HCRF according to the two criteria mentioned above. The predictive reliability of an increase in CVD cases within 2-3 days exceeded 80%, and within 1-2 days 70%. No essential difference in predictive reliability was observed when the number of CVD cases exceeded the average monthly level by 10% or 15%. Geomagnetic field variations contribute only insignificantly to leaps in the number of CVD cases, which are evoked by the sum effects of other factors. The results of the present study should be regarded as preliminary.

Space proton flux and the temporal distribution of cardiovascular deaths.

The influence of solar activity (SA) and geomagnetic activity (GMA) on human homeostasis has long been investigated. The aim of the present study was to analyse the relationship between monthly proton flux (> 90 MeV) and other SA and GMA parameters and between proton flux and temporal (monthly) distribution of total and cardiovascular-related deaths. The data from 180 months (1974-1989) of distribution in the Beilinson Campus of the Rabin Medical Centre, Israel, and of 108 months (1983-1991) from the Kaunas Medical Academy, were analysed and compared with SA, GMA and space proton flux (> 90 MeV). It was concluded: (1) monthly levels of SA, GMA and radiowave propagation (Fof2) are significantly and adversely correlated with monthly space proton flux (> 90 MeV); (2) medical-biological phenomena that increase during periods of low solar and/or geomagnetic activity may be stimulated by physical processes provoked by the concomitant increase in proton flux; (3) the monthly number of deaths related (positively or negatively) to SA are significantly and adversely related to the space proton flux (> 90 MeV).

Subscales scores of the Lithuanian version of CBCL--preliminary data on the emotional and behavioural problems in childhood and adolescence.

This study set out to investigate some psychometric properties of the Lithuanian version of CBCL for providing the preliminary data on the emotional and behavioural problems in Lithuanian children taking factors such as gender, age, SES and family composition into account. The CBCL was completed by parents of 7- to 11- and 12- to 14-year-old school children (N = 1296) drawn from the urban and suburban population. Younger boys scored higher than girls on externalizing problems and total problems scores, and older girls scored higher on internalizing problems. Younger children scored higher than the older children on total problems and externalizing problems scores. The comparisons with the US sample indicated that the levels of problem behaviour in 7- to 14-year-old children are similar to those found in the US. Lithuanian children had higher total problem scores; however, the effect sizes for other scales, except the attention problems scale and the somatic complaints scale, were very small. Similar to other studies, we found significant SES effects on total problem scores. Problem scores were highest for the lowest SES children. In general, this study supports previous findings concerning CBCL: similarities in emotional and behavioural problems outweigh differences in cross-cultural studies based on CBCL.

A cross-cultural investigation of the role of foot size in physical attractiveness.

Disparate cultural practices suggest that small foot size may contribute to female attractiveness. Two hypotheses potentially explain such a pattern. Sexual dimorphism in foot size may lead observers to view small feet as feminine and large feet as masculine. Alternately, because small female feet index both youth and nulliparity, evolution may have favored a male preference for this attribute in order to maximize returns on male reproductive investment. Whereas the observational hypothesis predicts symmetrical polarizing preferences, with small feet being preferred in women and large feet being preferred in men, the evolutionary hypothesis predicts asymmetrical preferences, with the average phenotype being preferred in men. Using line drawings that varied only in regard to relative foot size, we examined judgments of attractiveness in nine cultures. Small foot size was generally preferred for females, while average foot size was preferred for males. These results provide preliminary support for the hypothesis that humans possess an evolved preference for small feet in females.

Relation between individual tree mortality and tree characteristics in a polluted and non-polluted environment.

UNLABELLED: Data on individual tree mortality in relatively healthy (Berezinskiy biosphere reserve) and damaged (surroundings of the mineral fertilizer plant 'Achema') even-aged Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands are presented. Tree size and competition intensity were found to be the most significant predictors of individual tree mortality in all age groups of the relatively healthy Scots pine stands, however, an essential reduction in the closeness of relations between the tree mortality rate and these variables was determined with the aging of stands. An exponential decrease in tree mortality probability with an increase of tree size is characteristic for trees suffering different competition intensity, however, this decrease becomes much more pronounced as the competition pressure increases. The relations of different tree and stand variables with tree mortality probability have been found to become much weaker in the polluted environment. An exponential increase in tree mortality probability with an increase of crown defoliation was characteristic of damaged Scots pine stands, however, the rate of the increase was different in different age and diameter classes. The impact of crown defoliation on tree mortality rate increased with the aging of stands. At the same defoliation level, individual tree mortality probability was much higher for smaller suppressed trees, however, a relative increase in tree mortality probability along with an increase of crown defoliation was more pronounced for dominant trees. CONCLUSION: a higher mortality of damaged (defoliated) trees should be considered while assessing losses in forest productivity in a polluted environment.
