Visual search in the pigeon: hunt and peck method.

Pigeons pecked at small forms displayed on an oscilloscope screen under computer control. The birds were required to find a small o amid varying numbers of x forms. A photocell glued to the bird's beak provided a signal to the computer when the beak approached a form, and the computer recorded the time and target of the response. As in some similar studies with human subjects, erros and reaction times increased with number of x forms displayed. The method appears promising for further studies of search and of other processes related to perception and information-processing in birds.

Computerised axial tomography and magnetic resonance scanning in the Tolosa-Hunt syndrome.

A 50-year-old Asian male presented with a left sixth nerve palsy, left temporal pain, and rapidly deteriorating visual acuity in the left eye. A high resolution CT scan and magnetic resonance scan showed a left retro-orbital enhancing lesion extending from the lateral margin of the cavernous sinus on to the greater wing of the sphenoid and into the left orbit. Arteriography was normal. On high dose steroid therapy there was total resolution of the lesion. The value of imaging techniques in this condition is discussed.

Hunting the gowk?--Psychiatric community care in Scotland.

The implementation of the community care changes throughout the United Kingdom from 1 April will mark the culmination of a series of major health and social care reforms. The avowed aims of achieving value for money and improved consumer choice through the introduction of competitive internal markets have yet to be tested. The political complexion of Scotland means that any proposed change to the NHS has tended to be greeted with a mixture of suspicion and resistance. As a result very few self governing trusts and fundholding general practices exist north of the border. And although Scotland has not had a wide reaching policy of moving psychiatric patients out of hospitals, community care for mentally ill people has advanced spontaneously.

'Hunt the thimble': a study of the radiology of ingested foreign bodies.

The role of radiology in the management of patients with a history of ingested foreign bodies is reviewed in a retrospective study over a 2-year period in a Children's Hospital. If radiography was confined to those children who have a clinical history suggestive of foreign body impaction in the oesophagus, a foreign body aspiration or having swallowed a button battery, the work load and unnecessary radiation arising from this practice could be halved. This study demonstrates another misuse of radiological services.
