Evolutionary psychologists often overlook a wealth of information existing between the proximate genotypic level and the ultimate phenotypic level. This commonly ignored level of biological organization is the ongoing activity of neurobiological systems. In this paper, we extend our previous arguments concerning strategic weaknesses of evolutionary psychology by advocating a foundational view that focuses on similarities in brain, behavior, and various basic psychological features across mammalian species. Such an approach offers the potential to link the emerging discipline of evolutionary psychology to its parent scientific disciplines such as biochemistry, physiology, molecular genetics, developmental biology and the neuroscientific analysis of animal behavior. We detail an example of this through our impending work using gene microarray technology to characterize gene expression patterns in rats during aggressive and playful social interactions. Through a focus on functional homologies and the experimental analysis of conserved, subcortical emotional and motivational brain systems, neuroevolutionary psychobiology can reveal ancient features of the human mind that are still shared with other animals. Claims regarding evolved, uniquely human, psychological constructs should be constrained by the rigorous evidentiary standards that are routine in other sciences.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of manipulation on segmental motion of lumbar vertebra and the clinical significance before and after treatment, and evaluation with charge couple device (CCD) measurement system. METHODS: CCD and dynamic radiography were conducted in 30 patients before and after treated by manipulation or other conservative therapy, analysis and comparisons in segmental motion ranges of flexion-extension and lateral bending, correlation between data of CCD system and radiography as well as characteristics of lumbar vertebral function recovery after manipulation were performed. RESULTS: Certain correlation between data of CCD and radiography was shown by linear correlation test (r = 0.42-0.72, P < 0.05-0.01). Paired t test showed that the lower lumbar segmental flexion-extension function was significantly recovered (t = 2.26-2.61, P < 0.05-0.01) after manipulation, but the recovery on other segments was insignificant. CONCLUSION: The special designed CCD system is of important clinical significance in assessing segmental lumbar vertebral function. Lower lumbar vertebral flexion-extention functional state is a crucial criterium for evaluation of manipulative therapy in lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion.
The knowledge of surgical tactics in treatment of ulcerous disease and its complications in young persons is of great practical importance for military health service. The problem of choice of surgical method in perforated gastroduodenal ulcers remains contradictory. Many authors draw attention to merits and demerits of both palliative and radical interventions. The long-term results of identical operations obtained by different authors often vary and not infrequently are quite opposite. The review of our and foreign literature concerning the surgical treatment of perforated gastroduodenal ulcers in the young patients shows that the unequivocal decision of this problem today is not available. Discussions about expediency to perform different interventions in the young patients are generally concentrated around the notions of "acute" and "chronic" ulcer. However both these categories are poorly defined because the criteria of their evaluation vary in different authors. Obviously the choice of surgical method in the young patients with perforated gastroduodenal ulcers should be based both on multi-factor analysis of anamnestic data, the patient's general state, intraoperative picture and on retrospective and prospective analysis of conservative treatment, its possibilities and efficiency, on the patient's opinion. The availability of technical possibilities to perform the operation and presence of the adequately trained surgeons are necessary.

Analysis with some habitat indexes of different succession stage, this paper quantitatively measured the degradation degree of degraded ecosystems in this region. The results showed that the average dissimilarities between natural Quercus forest, natural Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) forest and Populus-Quercus forest in Nanliuzhangzi forestry centre and Chinese pine plantations in Niuheliang region and Qitian forestry centre were 0.655, 0.665, 2.029 and 3.919, respectively, and as a whole, the dissimilarities represented the places of the forests in the process of ecosystem succession/degradation. It was also showed that most habitats were degraded to the stage between shrubbery and pioneer arbor forest, and closer to the succession stage of pioneer arbor forest. Some suggestions were made for the management of the existing plantation and the construction of mixed forest, e.g., to increase the proportion of shrubbery and pioneer arbor species, especially that of nitrogen fixation tree species. The plant species list of several main vegetation types in western Liaoning we offered could provide scientific reference for the vegetation restoration and the management of pure Chinese pine plantation in this region.
Diarrheagenic E. coli strains contribute to water related diseases in urban and rural environment in developing and developed world. E. coli pathotype and pathogenicity varies due to complex multifactorial mechanism involving a large number of virulence factors. Rapid assessment of the virulence pattern of E. coli isolates is possible by Real-Time PCR probes like TaqMan. For designing TaqMan probes and primers for multiplex PCR selected E. coli gene sequences: stx1, stx2, hlyA, chuA, eae, lacZ, lamB and fimA were retrieved from NCBI's GenBank database. The alignment of the multiple sequences and analysis of conserved sequences was carried out using ClustalW and BLAST programs. The primers and Taqmen probes were designed using Beacon Designer software version 2.1 for two multiplexed PCR assays. In silico PCR simulation of these assays showed PCR products for stx2 (248bp) stx1 (102 bp), lacZ (228bp) and lamB (86 bp) in multiplex #1 and eae (200bp), chuA (147 bp), hlyA (141bp) and fimA (79 bp) in multiplex #2, respectively. These multiplexed PCR amplification products and probes can be used to identify and confirm presence of O157:H7/ H7-, O157:H43/45 and O26:H-/H11 serotypes. In conclusion, multiplex Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction oligomers and TaqMan probes designed and validated in silico will be helpful in management of water quality and outbreaks, by improving specificity and minimizing time needed for in vitro verification work.
Microbiological studies were performed in three small gypsum karst lakes in northern Lithuania, most typical of the region. Samples were taken in different seasons of 2001. The conditions for microbial growth in the lakes are determined by elevated content of salts (from 0.5 to 2.0 g/l), dominated by SO(2-)4 and Ca2+ ions (up to 1.4 and 0.6 g/l, respectively). The elevated sulfate concentration is favorable for sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRBs). Summer and winter stratification gives rise to anaerobic water layers enriched in products of anaerobic degradation: H2S and CH4. The lakes under study contain abundant SRBs not only in bottom sediments (from 10(3) to 10(7) cells/dm3) but also in the water column (from 10(2) to 10(6) cells/ml). The characteristic spatial and temporal variations in the rate of sulfate reduction were noted. The highest rates of this process were recorded in summer: 0.95-2.60 mg S(2-)/dm3 per day in bottom sediments and up to 0.49 mg S(2-)/l per day in the water column. The maximum values (up to 11.36 mg S(2-)/dm3) were noted in areas where bottom sediments were enriched in plankton debris. Molecular analysis of conservative sequences of the gene for 16S RNA in sulfate-reducing microorganisms grown on lactate allowed them to be identified as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans.
An abnormally sized 3.5 kb p53 transcript was detected in the KE-37R human leukemic T-cell line in which no p53 protein could be detected by immunoprecipitation. S1 nuclease protection experiments and sequencing analysis indicated conservation of the entire intron 4 (755 bp) in the 3.5 kb transcript and the presence of a G to A substitution in the last exonic nucleotide of the splice donor site. These data support the notion that p53 gene inactivation by point mutations in splice junctions also exists in hemopoietic neoplasia.
We have isolated and characterized a full-length cDNA clone encoding human loricrin. Curiously, this protein displays major differences from the recently described mouse loricrin (Mehrel, T., Hohl, D., Nakazawa, H., Rothnagel, J.A., Longley, M.A., Bundman, D., Cheng, C.K., Lichti, U., Bisher, M.E., Steven, A. C., Steinert, P.M., Yuspa, S.H., and Roop, D.R. (1990) Cell 61, 1103-1112). Although both proteins are glycine-serine-cysteine-rich, the sequences have not been conserved. However, analysis of the sequences reveals a common motif of quasi-peptide repeats of an aliphatic or aromatic amino acid residue followed by several glycine and/or serine and cysteine residues. These sequences are interspersed and flanked by short glutamine- or glutamine/lysine-rich peptides. Thus loricrins consist of a family of cell envelope proteins of highly variable sequences that nevertheless retain common structural elements. We show that unlike all other putative protein components of the cell envelope, loricrins are highly insoluble, due at least in part to cross-linking by disulfide bonds. Furthermore, we have isolated four peptides from purified human cell envelopes that contain recognizable loricrin sequences and which are cross-linked by the N epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl)lysine isodipeptide bond. The presence of such bonds thus affords an explanation for the extraordinary insolubility of loricrin by cross-linking to the cell envelope and can also explain the low steady-state levels of monomeric loricrin in cytoskeletal extracts of epidermis. This study represents the first report of this isodipeptide cross-link in a protein component of the cornified cell envelope. We propose a model for the structure of loricrin in which (i) the unusual glycine-serine-rich sequences adopt a flexible loop conformation, indexed on the recurrent aliphatic residues; (ii) inter- or intramolecular isodipeptide and disulfide cross-links induce or stabilize folding of loricrin so as to form a more compact rosette-like structure; and (iii) the presence of the flexible glycine-rich loops necessarily will impact a flexible character to the cell envelope and entire epithelium.
An analysis of the complex treatment of 33 patients with acute bilateral suppurative diseases of the lungs complicated by pneumothorax has been made. It has been proved that early pleurectomy with resection of the lung is possible in a number of patients with such a pathology. Indications to surgery were established and a comparative analysis of conservative and surgical methods was made.

Pain relief, function, and range of motion in surface replacement hip arthroplasty is comparable to the Charnley-type conventional arthroplasty. Patients with primary and secondary degenerative hip disease are the most suitable candidates for surface replacement. Previous operations, especially mold arthroplasty, increases incidence of failure. Osteopenia, obesity, or congenital deficiency of the acetabulum also increases the incidence of failure. Intraoperative preservation of abductor continuity and rigorous postoperative abductor strengthening are necessary to insure the success of the procedure. A minimum of 18 months is necessary to adequately evaluate the procedure. Acetabular loosening is avoidable. Hemispherical reaming of the femoral head did not contribute to femoral component loosening. Traumatic femoral neck fracture is a concern, but atraumatic femoral neck fracture can be avoided through improved operative technique, and by a program of rehabilitation of hip musculature. The procedure is indicated in the relatively young, well-motivated, non-obese patient with degenerative joint disease who has normal hip musculature.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is caused by deletions of 3.3-kb tandemly repeated units contained within a large polymorphic EcoRI fragment close to the telomere of chromosome 4q. Since the rearrangements were assumed to interfere with the structure or function of the putative FSHD gene, the gene search was focused on cosmids containing these repeat units and, in addition, cosmids spanning 75 kb of upstream sequences. cDNA selection hybridization was applied to four overlapping cosmid clones, yielding a total of 150 putative cDNA clones. These clones showed a random distribution across the cosmid contig, except for three regions which contained a much larger number of clones. Nine cDNA clones hybridized to a 2.2-kb EcoRI fragment, located 22 kb centromeric to the 3.3-kb repeated units. This 2.2-kb fragment showed evolutionary conservation, and analysis of the sequence by "GRAIL" predicted the presence of several exons. Transcripts homologous to this fragment could be identified but none of them originated from the 4q35 locus. Strikingly, most clones revealed 4-10 homologous loci, and no single copy clones could be isolated. These findings are in line with earlier observations by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) showing hybridization of individual cosmid clones to multiple chromosomes. The presence of homologous regions on other chromosomes seriously complicates the cloning of the FSHD gene.
