Aqueous extracts of cotton bracts induce a concentration dependent decrease in flow rates on partial expiratory flow volume curves. It has been shown that the active substance(s) is stable to moderate heat and to acid or alkaline conditions. Results of dialysis and gel filtration suggest that the active component(s) has a molecular size of about 1000 daltons. The component(s) is not absorbed on to ion exchange resins but is readily removed from aqueous extract by activated charcoal. The bronchoconstrictor agent cannot be steam distilled or extracted by ether. It is readily soluble in water; a single extraction of bracts removes all biologically active material. It is proposed that healthy subjects, responsive to cotton bracts extract, can be used qualitatively to fractionate and quantitatively to assay the active substance(s) in this material.
A historical prospective mortality study was conducted at a glass filament plant in Ontario, Canada. The cohort consisted of 1465 men and women who had worked for a total of at least one year between 1951 (when the operations began) and 1986. Ninety six deaths were found in the 96% of persons traced. Mortality was compared by the person-years method with that of the Ontario population. An estimate of cumulative dust exposure was made based on long term employees' recollections of past conditions. Overall mortality was below that expected (standardised mortality ratio (SMR) = 76) based on 82 deaths. There were 11 deaths due to lung cancer; slightly but not significantly more than expected (SMR = 136, p = 0.31). Analysis by both duration of employment and cumulative exposure showed this increase to be inconsistent with an occupational aetiology.

BACKGROUND: Increased skin Staphylococcus aureus colonization is frequently found in atopic patients. The reduction of local overinfection decreases skin inflammation and improves the flares. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the antimicrobial activity of a silk fabric (MICROAIR DermaSilk) coated with alkoxysilane quaternary ammonium with durable antimicrobial properties (AEGIS AEM 5572/5) in children affected by atopic dermatitis (AD). METHODS: Sixteen children, 12 affected by AD with symmetric eczematous lesions on the antecubital areas and 4 without any cutaneous disease, used, for 7 days, tubular arm covers made of this special silk fabric but only one of each pair was coated with AEGIS AEM 5572/5. Microbiological examinations were done with standard cultural swabs and by means of quantification of bacterial agents using agar plates at baseline, after 1 h and after 7 days. RESULTS: After 7 days a significant improvement in the mean value of the 'local SCORAD' index was observed in both the covered areas compared to the values obtained at baseline. The reduction in the mean number of colony forming units per square centimetre was similar in both areas. CONCLUSIONS: Although this special silk fabric seems to be able to improve skin lesions in AD, we were unable to demonstrate that such silk fabrics coated with AEGIS AEM 5572/5 have an antibacterial activity in vivo, as shown in vitro.
