[Technology development as social process: prospects and frontiers of social scientific elucidation of technological advancement].

This article provides an overview of the new developments in social scientific technology research which have changed considerably as a result of public debate and reactions to the importance of advancements in technology. The shift in emphasis, away from the effects of technology to its shaping, is described and certain hypotheses and concepts of advancement in the study of the social conditions underlying technical development processes are presented.

[Sociological aspects of modification of social behavior. Spontaneous action, social stress and individual life style].

To interest people in health behavior there are two different ways. First of all the way using the methods of mass communication or as some call it: "social marketing". But this raises the problems of defining the population that should be referred to and to overcome the resistance of social structure. So generally there are only few chances in succeeding. The other way would be that those people engaged in realizing preventive medicine would try to cooperate with existing groups, organizations or institutions. This seems to be far more successful. To reduce the number of "arbeitsbedingte Krankheiten" (sickness that mainly but not only depends on working conditions) special opportunities are offered by industrial firms.

[Social environment and social network: extent and resources of the daily life of elderly persons].

The study asks for factors determining the activity space of the aged. Indicators of old people's activities space are the number of their outdoor activities and their use of the local supply of public facilities. Controversial hypothesis are won from ecological gerontology and psychological attachment theory. At issue in the first place is how personal social networks mold older people's outdoor behavior. Another hypothesis assumes social support of the elderly to be exposed to the laws of reciprocity. The study makes use of a poll titled "life-organization of older people" that was conducted by the German Youth Institute in 1993. Respondents were German 55- to 79-year-olds (N = 4130). Analyses rely on multifactorial analyses of variance. Results back attachment theory and the reciprocity thesis.

The primary health center as a social system: PHC, social status, and the issue of team-work in South Asia.

Primary health care ideology is considered from the vantage point of health center field staff in South India and Sri Lanka. It is argued that professional and organizational role conflicts are fostered by primary health care inspired programs introduced without regard to the status and motivations of existing cadres of staff. Attention is focused on the health center as a social system and the need for social systems analysis as a preliminary step in planning for team-work at the health center-community level. Inasmuch as team-work is the cornerstone of PHC implementation, more thought need be given to staff response to potential programs.

The influence of provocateurs' emotion displays on the social information processing of children varying in social adjustment and age.

This study examined the effect of provocateurs' emotion displays on first through fourth graders' social information processing (SIP). Rating and nomination sociometric techniques were used to identify rejected-aggressive, rejected-nonaggressive, average-nonaggressive, and popular-nonaggressive groups. Children viewed videotaped ambiguous provocation situations in which provocateurs' emotion displays were varied systematically. After each vignette, children's recall of story details, attribution of intent, and problem-solving responses were obtained. Half of the children were randomly assigned to a condition where they were asked directly about provocateurs' emotions, and the remaining children were not asked about provocateurs' feelings. Results revealed both developmental and social adjustment differences in SIP. In addition, provocateurs' emotion displays and asking versus not asking about those displays influenced multiple aspects of SIP.

System, environmental, and policy changes: using the social-ecological model as a framework for evaluating nutrition education and social marketing programs with low-income audiences.

A variety of nutrition education interventions and social marketing initiatives are being used by the Food Stamp Program to improve food resource management, food safety, dietary quality, and food security for low-income households. The Social-Ecological Model is proposed as a theory-based framework to characterize the nature and results of interventions conducted through large public/private partnerships with the Food Stamp Program. In particular, this article suggests indicators and measures that lend themselves to the pooling of data across counties and states, with special emphasis on systems, environment, and public policy change within organizations at the community and state levels.

The transformation of everyday social experience: what a mental and social health perspective reveals about Chinese communities under global and local change.

Chinese communities in East Asia are undergoing great economic and social change. The result includes material prosperity but also worsening mental and social health indices. Epidemiological studies clarify the magnitude of these problems and the particular vulnerability of women and the elderly. Ethnographic studies indicate that moral experience is also changing, and that with it subjectivity is being altered in ways that are of concern. And yet it is not clear, in historical perspective, how to assess these changes when they are compared to the extraordinarily difficult experiences of the Chinese over most of the Century.

Individual differences in social comparison: development of a scale of social comparison orientation.

Development and validation of a measure of individual differences in social comparison orientation (the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure [INCOM]) are described. Assuming that the tendency toward social comparison is universal, the scale was constructed so as to be appropriate to and comparable in 2 cultures: American and Dutch. It was then administered to several thousand people in each country. Analyses of these data are presented indicating that the scale has good psychometric properties. In addition, a laboratory study and several field studies are described that demonstrated the INCOM's ability to predict comparison behavior effectively. Possible uses of the scale in basic and applied settings are discussed.

Who attains social status? Effects of personality and physical attractiveness in social groups.

One of the most important goals and outcomes of social life is to attain status in the groups to which we belong. Such face-to-face status is defined by the amount of respect, influence, and prominence each member enjoys in the eyes of the others. Three studies investigated personological determinants of status in social groups (fraternity, sorority, and dormitory), relating the Big Five personality traits and physical attractiveness to peer ratings of status. High Extraversion substantially predicted elevated status for both sexes. High Neuroticism, incompatible with male gender norms, predicted lower status in men. None of the other Big Five traits predicted status. These effects were independent of attractiveness, which predicted higher status only in men. Contrary to previous claims, women's status ordering was just as stable as men's but emerged later. Discussion focuses on personological pathways to attaining status and on potential mediators.

Social perception deficits after traumatic brain injury: interaction between emotion recognition, mentalizing ability, and social communication.

Thirty-four adults with severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and 34 matched control participants were asked to interpret videotaped conversational exchanges. Study participants were asked to judge the speakers' emotions, the speakers' beliefs (first-order theory of mind), what the speakers intended their conversational partners to believe (second-order theory of mind), and what they meant by remarks that were sincere or literally untrue (i.e., a lie or sarcastic retort). The TBI group had marked difficulty judging most facets of social information. They could recognize speaker beliefs only when this information was explicitly provided. In general, emotion recognition and first-order theory of mind judgments were not related to the ability to understand social (conversational) inference, whereas second-order theory of mind judgments were related to that ability.

[Strategic controlling in the consideration of social demographic changes in social medical services].

Annually the Medizinische Dienst der Krankenversicherung Westfalen-Lippe (MDK-WL) performs approximately 120,000 nursing care assessments according to the 11th social statute book (SGB XI). A prospective reflection on the amount of expert assessments and the spectrum of services for the Nursing Care Insurance until 2020, was performed in order to establish a long term strategic controlling. The insured party makes the request for nursing care according to their personal estimation when the need for assistance is increasing. To predict the future amount of expert assessments you have to take into consideration the social background of the families in addition to age and gender (there is a clear correlation between age and the need of assistance). The database from nursing care assessments in 2001 was projected on a demographic model for the region of Westfalen-Lippe. The amount of requests correlates as expected with the patients age and increases exponentially. The incidence in the need of care shows relevant gender differences, but taken into consideration the very different age structure, the overall incidence is very similar. Against the background of the current nursing care law, the MDK-WL has to deal with an annual increase in assessments of 2 %. The requests for single persons are extremely often without foundation (55 % not substantially in need of care vs. 35 %). Looking at the requests of couples, it shows that the ones for women are more often unfounded then the ones for men (39 % vs. 32 %). It is necessary to take the development of the amount of single living persons into consideration to achieve more accurate predictions for the amount of assessments.

Social knowledge and social competence: number and quality of strategies as predictors of peer behavior.

The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of two different measures of preschool children's social strategy knowledge to predict classroom behavior with peers. Thirty-two 4- and 5-year-old children attending a university sponsored preschool were administered the Preschool Interpersonal Problem-Solving Tests (PIPS) and an enactive assessment of strategy knowledge. Observational and teacher-rating measures of children's positive and aggressive peer behavior were also obtained. Significant correlations were obtained between (a) the number of strategies produced in the enactive measure and cooperative play ratings by teachers, (b) the number of strategies produced in the PIPS and observations of positive peer behavior, and (c) ratings of friendliness in the PIPS and teacher-rated cooperative play and aggression and observations of aggression. Results are discussed in terms of implications for social skill training.

Gay men, social support and HIV disease: a study of social integration in the gay community.

As part of a large study of the effects of HIV and AIDS on gay male sexual behaviour, we investigated the extent to which gay men in the UK have access to social support and informal care at times of illness. The study sample (n = 502) demonstrated high levels of willingness to disclose sexuality to others, sociability and social integration. Over 90% reported that they had access to people whom they could turn for practical help at times of temporary incapacity. Between 42% and 46% have known a person, or persons, with HIV symptomatic disease, AIDS or someone who has died of AIDS, although men recruited in larger towns and cities were more likely to know people at every stage of HIV infection and AIDS than those from smaller towns. Twenty-five per cent had provided practical help and support to at least one person with AIDS; men in this situation were more likely to have had a close friend, lover or former lover who had died of AIDS. It is argued that it is not possible to expect the gay community to provide fully for the non-medical care of its members and, whilst some needs can be fulfilled on an informal care basis, the demands of long-term serious illness are such that adequate support services should be available in the community.

Social networks and coronary artery disease: a comparison of the structure and function of social relations as predictors of disease.

This study provides the first direct comparison of the relative importance of structural versus functional aspects of social network ties as they relate to susceptibility to coronary artery disease. Data from 119 men and 40 women undergoing coronary angiography provide an opportunity to compare these associations in relation to a direct and continuous measure of atherosclerosis while controlling for age, sex, income, hypertension, serum cholesterol, smoking, angina, diabetes, family history of heart disease, Type A behavior pattern, and hostility. Regression analyses indicate that network instrumental support and feelings of being loved are more important in predicting coronary atherosclerosis than is network size, independent of all covariables (relative extent of atherosclerosis, low/high support = 1.74 and 1.5, respectively). More "problem-oriented" emotional support did not show a similarly strong association (relative extent of atherosclerosis = 1.01). These findings suggest that certain functional aspects of social network ties are more strongly associated with host resistance to coronary atherosclerosis than are structural characteristics like network size.

Genetic and environmental contributions to pro-social attitudes: a twin study of social responsibility.

Although 51 twin and adoption studies have been performed on the genetic architecture of antisocial behaviour, only four previous studies have examined a genetic contribution to pro-social behaviour. Earlier work by the author with the University of London Institute of Psychiatry Adult Twin Register found that genes contributed approximately half of the variance to measures of self-report altruism, empathy, nurturance and aggression, including acts of violence. The present study extends those results by using a 22-item Social Responsibility Questionnaire with 174 pairs of monozygotic twins and 148 pairs of dizygotic twins. Forty-two per cent of the reliable variance was due to the twins' genes, 23% to the twins' common environment and the remainder to the twins' non-shared environment.

Social support and pregnancy: I. Factorial structure and psychosocial correlates of perceived social support.

In a questionnaire survey among 1329 first-trimester pregnant women, social support providers were divided by factor analysis into husband, 'premarital network' (parents and friends) and 'postmarital network' (children and mother-in-law), while social support contents were divided into 'given' (emotional, informational and instrumental support) and 'giving' (nurturing opportunity and general confiding). The husband was most frequently nominated by the woman as the support provider in both of these categories. Multiple regression analyses revealed that a husband's poor 'given' support was predicted by the presence of premenstrual irritability, a lower level of the woman's own education, her smoking habits and past experience of pregnancy termination, while a husband's poor 'giving' support was predicted by current older age, smoking habits and past experience of delivery.

Infant social attention predicts preschool social cognition.

Recent research examining infants' understanding of intentional action claims to be studying the early origins or precursors of children's later theories of mind If these infant understandings are continuous with later preschool achievements, there should be empirical connections between the two. We provide initial evidence that infants' social attention predicts later social cognition. Specifically, 14-month-olds' habituation to human intentional action significantly predicts later preschool mentalistic construal of persons, as measured on a Theory of Mind Scale.

Psychosomatic symptoms in human service work. A study on Swedish social workers and social insurance personnel.

This study reports on subjective health of personnel in human services and other occupations. A mail questionnaire was sent to 8296 employees in the Social Insurance Organization (SIO) and the Individual and Family Care (IFC) in social welfare agencies. The response rate was 69.1% or 5730 persons. Perceived health was measured by a standard form widely used in occupational health services, FHV004D, here split into four principal components, indicating psycho-vegetative, musculoskeletal, immunological, and gastro-intestinal health. In relation to reference data on other human service personnel (nurses, teachers) and white collar workers (bank and insurance personnel), the studied groups scored much higher on psycho-vegetative symptoms (OR:s about 3), higher on musculo-skeletal symptoms (OR:s about 1.7), but had equal scores on the other symptom types. It is concluded that self-reported psychovegetative and musculoskeletal health is especially problematic in SIO and IFC, indicating stress in human service work. It is hypothesized that an adversary relation to clients can be an aggravating factor in that context.
