Androgen and the development of human sex-typical behavior: rough-and-tumble play and sex of preferred playmates in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).

We hypothesized that girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), who experience higher than normal levels of androgens prenatally, would show masculinization of behaviors that show sex differences. Therefore, we examined rough-and-tumble play and sex of preferred playmates in 3-8-year-old children with CAH and in unaffected 3-8-year-old male and female relatives. The hypothesized sex differences in rough-and-tumble play were seen, with unaffected boys showing more rough-and-tumble play than unaffected girls. However, CAH girls were similar to unaffected girls. Additionally, CAH boys showed reduced rough-and-tumble play. In contrast, sex of preferred playmates showed the hypothesized pattern of results. There were sex differences, with unaffected boys preferring boys and unaffected girls preferring girls. In addition, the preferences of girls with CAH were masculinized compared to those of unaffected girls. Results are discussed in terms of possible influences of social, hormonal, and illness factors.

Some recent observations on the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa.

Studies of diagnostic subtypes within the anorexia nervosa syndrome has given rise to the differentiation of a bulimic subgroup as distinct from the restrictive type of anorexia nervosa. The bulimic subtype is characterized by the use of vomiting and laxatives to induce weight loss; a display of impulse-related behaviours; extraversion and sexual activity in contrast to the isolation of the restrictive group; and a family history of obesity in the mother, all suggesting a subcategory within the primary anorexia nervosa syndrome. Investigation of behaviours and attitudes related to anorexia nervosa in a group of dancers disclosed a significantly elevated attitude toward food and body image characteristic of anorexia nervosa in this group and ten times the expected prevalence of the disorder itself. This is suggestive of the relative importance of cultural pressures towards thinness and anorexia nervosa in certain populations as one factor amongst others in the multi-determined origin of this condition. This cultural pressure is consistent with a disturbance of body image perception in anorexia nervosa. This disturbance seems to be stable in the same individual over a period of one year, is related to a poor prognosis and is correlated with measures of psychopathology including helplessness, depression and anhedonia. It is also correlated with a satiety defect as reflected in a failure to develop an aversion to sucrose when directly tested.

A woman's homosexual transference with a male analyst.

A woman in analysis with a male analyst developed a significant homosexual transference during the middle phase of treatment. The expression and working through of this material (in displacement) is seen as reflecting one example of the influence of gender on the psychoanalytic process. For the male analyst to utilize this transference, he must make a clear distinction between the negative oedipal phase and the preoedipal (pregenital) phase in female development.

Symposium on object relations theory and love. Love, the couple, and the group: a psychoanalytic frame.

After a brief summary of previous work on the intrapsychic preconditions of love relations, this paper explores the built-in contradictions between the sexual couple and its social group, their mutual equilibrium, and the formation and dissolution of couples within the group. Clinical case material illustrates how three dimensions of love relations-namely, sexual experience, object relations, and superego integration-jointly determine a couple's stability within the social group. Finally, sexual psychopathology affecting the couple's interaction with its social group is explored in terms of some frequent pathological developments.

[Psychoanalytic viewpoints on adolescent sexuality].

With the beginning of puberty the youth is challenged to transform this primarily biological development into a psychological experience and to integrate it into his personality. Depending on the quality of development of personality up to then and on the arrangement with environment this process will be experienced as a crisis, through which the youth at last will find a new positive identity or it ends in a permanent identity-crisis and manifestation of a neurosis. The doctor's sympathetic, understanding attitude is more effective for managing a critical development of puberty than a classical psychoanalytic treatment.

The playmate and play style preferences structured interview: a comparison of children with gender identity disorder and controls.

The present study compared the sex-typed preferences for playmates and play styles in children referred for concerns about their gender identity development (199 boys, 43 girls) with that of controls (96 boys, 38 girls). Each child was administered the Playmate and Play Style Preferences Structured Interview (PPPSI) developed by Alexander and Hines (Alexander, G. M., & Hines, M. (1994). Child Development, 65, 869-879). In the two single dimension conditions (playmates and play styles), the controls significantly preferred same-sex playmates and same-sex play styles whereas the gender-referred children significantly preferred cross-sex playmates and cross-sex play styles. Effect sizes ranged from 1.56-2.78. In the conflict condition (which required a choice between same-sex playmates and cross-sex play styles vs. cross-sex playmates and same-sex play styles), there was a general indication of a hierarchical preference for the preferred play style in the single dimension condition as opposed to the preferred playmate except for the gender-referred boys, who showed an inverted pattern. For the gender-referred group, the PPPSI data were significantly correlated with other measures of sex-typed behavior, providing evidence of predictive validity. The PPPSI also discriminated between probands threshold and subthreshold for the diagnosis of gender identity disorder. The results were discussed in relation to both basic and applied issues in the assessment of sex-typed behavior in children.
